Recently bought this game, and got a computer that should be able to run it. [XP, 2.8 GHz dual processor, 2gigs ram, ATI X300/X550/X1050 - this i dont know why, but that's what dxdiag says]

Installed it and ran into a file not found error, then updated my graphics card driver [this computer was recently reloaded]. Restarted the computer and tried again, and i get this error:

Failed to compile global shader FDOFAndBloomGatherFallbackPixelShader, with a few Filenames not found.

I'm going to try updating XP.

If there's another fix, please post it.

Looks like it's having issues with the local shader cache. Open up your Mass Effect launcher, choose Configure, and then click on the "Repair" tab in the left-hand column. Hit the bottom button: "Delete Local Shader Cache Files," and let us know how that works out.

The game SHOULD rebuild the cache the next time you run it, since it's running Unreal Engine 3, and because of this may take a bit longer than usual to load up.

The game requires a modern video graphics device with Dx9.0c capabilities (pixel shader SM-3 required). The seven or eight year old design of the Radeon 9600 didn't have that, and the X300 / X550 were just PCIe clones of the AGP 9600. TheX550 and  X600 were from a slightly faster version of the 9600. The X1050 was the same as the X550, it's just running with the 64 bit memory system (bad thing) from the X300 SE and 9600 SE. All of them, in other words, are now obsolete.

(Practical Requirement) Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 6 series (6800GT or better: 210, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 7600 GS, 8200, 8300, 8400 GS, 8500, 9200, & 9300 are below minimum system requirements)
ATI Radeon X1800 GTO (X1300, X1300 Pro, X1550, HD 2400, HD 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, HD 4350, HD 4550, and HD 5450 are below minimum system requirements)

If you have a desktop PC that has the PCIe video bus included, you can upgrade for about $40.  Laptops, generally, cannot accept a video upgrade, and PCs that are so old they do not have PCIe are a poor basis for upgrading at all, they are just too old.

Hmmm?  Have you given up entirely?

This one is only $46 after rebate, and has free shipping (Stateside, in USD), HD 4650:
