IMHO engineer is the worst class in both ME xD
Sadly, there is no such thing like augmenting ones equipment. In ME2 though, the class power grants you let-off on ressources when researching, up to 25%.

I've never played a full playthrough as an Engineer. The class descriptions mentions repair and modify equipment, is there ever a chance to do that or is it all lies and/or misleadings?
the only advantage I can think of is repairing the Mako, I've had it in flames in some of my earliest playthroughs & had to use the repair function 3 times once, with Ashley & Wrex, 2 times with Garrus & Liara, but when I had Tali & Garrus with me, it was fully repaired in one attempt

But engineers don't have shotguns in ME1, only as a bonus xD
First playthrough as Soldier and that problem is solved. Actually, in Mass Effect all you need is a Shotgun. You can blast through anything with them in that game.

Well, I love shotguns in ME1, especially the latest version of the Spectre Shotgun. You can kill anything, at any distance, without overheating any time(in ME2 they suck). If you pick the engineer class in your first playthrough, you'll get your a-- kicked, because without the bonus from another class like soldier or vanguard the class itself is quite weak as you don't have any biotic powers and you can only use a pistol. Engineer can only make a good class with the assistance of other classes, but I have one playthrough as engineer with shotgun as bonus and I regretted keeping the same class in ME2 xDNeofelis Nebulosa wrote...

-Play it after solder class to get shotguns or Assult rifles.
-Max out all tech, especailly AI hack and nueral shock.
-Have an armoured fighter(Ashley/Wrex)and a strong biotic(Liara/Kaiden) with you at all times.
-Reamember that overload and sabatoge can hurt your enemies direct health.(Unlike ME2)

I'd skip the maxxing out all of the tech skills.
Pistol - 12
Basic Armor - 3
Decryption- 9
Hacking - 12
Electronics - 9
Damping - 12
First Aid - 5
Medicine - 12
Medic - 12
Spectre Training - 4
Barrier - 12
or
If you want a bonus weapon
Pistol - 12
Basic Armor - 3
Decryption- 9
Hacking - 12
Electronics - 9
Damping - 12
First Aid - 5
Medicine - 12
Medic - 12
Spectre Training - 4
Bonus- 12
or
Pistol 12
Armor 8
Decryption 9
Hacking 12
Electronics 9
Damping 12
First Aid 5
Medicine 12
Engineer/Operative 12 (could very easily swap medic for operative)
Spectre 4
(bonus)Barrier 7 (mostly since engi's are a bit squishy)
You can very easily shave barrier down to advanced at 7 points and use the extra to increas armor. The main areas to look out for are where the talents break from basic to advanced to master. Decryption and electronics hit master with 9 points in each. You really get diminishing returns after that. With decryption 12 giving a 6% increase to tech explosions. Electronics is similar in yielding a fairly small return for the last 3 points. Especially if you're playing on higher difficulty, the damage from tech mines (aside from the shield damage from overload) is really pretty mininmal. They are more about stripping and disabling than doing damage to health.

The pistol with master marksmen was the strongest weapon in MAss Effect...
I would only take a second weapon because there are enemies that could use sabotage.
