Let's Talk about Varric!

...as a Love Interest

Well, I seem to recall David Gaider saying at one point that he would like to write a dwarf romance, and I know that we have some very dedicated dwarf players among the Origins fans, a lot of whom said they would really like a dwarf LI.

Seeing as Varric is by far the most attractive dwarf we've yet seen (in my opinion anyway), and probably spends a good amount of time with Hawke, I think he might be a romance option. Now, we all know you can't play as a dwarf in DA2, but would you still want a dwarven LI anyway? If you, like me, typically don't play dwarf characters in fantasy games, would you be into a dwarf LI?

How about Varric specifically as an LI option? He looks like a manly, dashing rogue type of character. I mean look at all the hair on his chest and that bling. He kind of looks like a pirate (and pirates are cool, come on*). Granted we don't know much about him, but what do you think? Would you or wouldn't you?

*disclaimer: I don't think he actually is a pirate.

Breaking Varric news:

Varric was born in Kirkwall. His family was noble before they became skyers. He is, therefore, a merchant prince among the surface dwarves. And that's probably all I can tell you about him for now. ~Mary Kirby

No one, and I mean no one, can resist Varric's chest hair. Poor man. Lovesick women of all species throwing themselves at him in the most embarrasing manner all the time...

It's true. Varric has broken the hearts of not just men and women, but also furniture, concepts, and even languages. Ancient Tevinter keeps sending him love poems, to no avail.

Hmmm Varric seems to be your especial favorite, like Sten was in Origins. Is Sten jealous? Does he like his new look?

Sten and Varric have... minor issues getting along.

Sten: You know they're going to declare you're a cat-girl, don't you?

Varric: I can't blame them, really. I do look sexy with the ears.

Sten: ...You encourage them?

Varric: Stretch, Stretch... I just like to get people talking. Makes everything more fun, you know?

Sten: Parshaara. Where did that writer leave the cookies?

I hope Varric's in game model can keep his look as close to the concept Varric as possible.

He does look remarkably like his concept at the moment.

Including the cup and stone throne?

Actually... I forget if he's currently sitting on the stone throne when he's narrating. I think he is. He at least occasionally has a cup in his hands, mostly for the sake of having something to toy with while looking smug. Nobody understands the importance of dramatic effect like your dwarven storytellers.

Varric:
Pros: Party member, can 1 hit kill, infinite stamina
Cons: Rides around on a stone parade float drawn by mabari, must have constant wine supply. Frequently blocks the camera and your party members' passage.

Shows what you know! Varric has the special ability Summon Bartender which he can use once every 30 minutes. No matter where he is, whether in the deepest recesses of the Deep Roads or in the middle of the Kirkwall market place, he can instantly have a glass of wine handed to him, bypassing all rules of supply and demand, physics, or hours of tavern operation.

Wait, here's something I don't understand.
Is Varric a surface dwarf who struck big? (becoming a whealty merchant, or some lord in the Free Marches)
Or is he a Dwarven Noble who joined Hawke and was later found by her.

Anyway, even from this piece of concept art you can see he carries himself like a noble.

I'm wondering if this "merchant prince" thing contradicts the reports of "king" we got in GameStar, or if that's actually a spoiler of sorts....

Varric is most definitely not a king. He gets a pretty nice chair for his interrogation by Cassandra, but I think that might just be because they couldn't get that thing out of the room without a chisel and a lot of help.

He looks like he's certainly enjoying his interrogation. Not so much on Cassandra's side. Did he crack a joke or give a cheesy pick up line on her or something?

Varric... is a very, very bad person to have to interrogate. Never get him talking. If you let him talk, he's already won. And yes, even though he's being interrogated, he's having a blast. He loves having a captive audience. Or captor audience in this case, I guess.

Why are there no wenches draped all over him and surrounding his chair? I bet he has a Summon Wench ability too.

I like to imagine that Cassandra keeps hauling them out periodically.

Although he is neither David Tennant, nor the Old Spice Guy, I adore Varric's voice.

well I just don't get what would be so "ewww" in dwarves

They are short, stocky and hairy.

And female dwarves often look like 14 year-old girls.

That said, I wouldn't mind someday writing a dwarf-dwarf romance (which was what I originally said), but otherwise? I stand by my ewww.

Hey, to be fair, I have also bragged ridiculously about the prowess of Duncan's beard, and I didn't write a single line for it.

Personally, I don't think DG would outright be disgusting by a dwarf romance if one was included.

On the contrary, I only have to find a romance appealing if I'm the one writing it.

That was the original comment I was responding to, after all-- the idea that I wanted to write one. :)

Ah yes, the pre-release ritual where Mary lapoons the characters that she wrote (her babies?) for the amusement of forumites.

I hope DA2 gets delayed past spring, so that Mary continues her hilarious, yet ridiculous cameos on this forum.

Yes! Wait no. Noooo.

Hm, any plans to do another interview-style blog entry in the future like you did with Wynne and Sten and the tower guard, Mary? I enjoy things like that.

Plans? No. But Sheryl and I didn't so much plan the last interview as say, "Hey, wouldn't this be awesome?" And then do it for fun. I think it could happen again once some of the other characters have been revealed.

All the female writers seem to like swooning (or at least pretending to swoon) over Varric. I think David and Luke might be immune to his charms, somehow. I assume they have some sort of pact with a demon to accomplish that.

Luke Kristjanson is a writer on DA2. He is (probably) most well-known for writing Minsc in BG1 and 2. He's been here a loooooong time. We sit at his feet while he tells us stories using plastic figurines from his box of toys.

Yes, that was probably all Luke. Not a week ago, he remarked that he hadn't posted on the forums in years, and that the fans had probably forgotten all about him. I said, "No, I remind them of you periodically." He buried his head in his hands and looked pained.

Please, give him a hug from me. He deserves that a hundred times folded.

So, a kind of damascus steel blade of gratitude? You're very sweet.

More recently I did some characters and crit work for ME2. On the DA side I wrote Leliana's Song, and bits of Paragon of Her Kind. Also, you can blame/thank/curse me for things like the horrible puns in the brothel and the scandalous letter collection.

Currently I am writing someone who may hurt you, but doesn't want to, and someone who wants to, but may not. I'd watch out for that.

I also enjoy poking beehives. Размещенное изображение
