Same reason Fett choose to entertain being dead in the Bounty Hunter Wars; enemies tend to leave you alone if they think you're dead. And will feel that much more fear when they hear rumors that a dead man is coming for them.
Of course, Shepard's not a bounty hunter. But overall, fear is always an effective tool. And conflicting rumors of dead/still fighting could provide an interesting psychological effect on one's enemy.

I doubt it will have much reprocussion come ME3, but it seemed logical to me to stay under the radar and tell Bailey to keep it the way it was. I don't see any need to deliberately announce to the major public that Shepard is alive.

And yea, I personally try to save that interview until post-suicide mission. Otherwise it is pretty awkward, especially if you haven't done Kasumi's mission yet.

When talking to Captain Bailey for the first time, he offers to let you bypass the apparently bureaucracy-riddled processes required to officially place you back among the ranks of the living, though the renegade option is something to the effect of "I prefer it[being "dead"] that way" (I've yet to choose this option). This is actually one of the few issues I haven't thought very much about at all. Has anyone consciously decided to remain "dead"? Regardless of your decision, what was your reasoning? For that matter, does anyone think there will be future reprocussions for either decision, provided that Bioware actually makes them count in ME3?
My renegade FemShep did. She's dead set on joining Cerberus, and it would be easier to do so if she no longer officially existed.

I don't think anything actually does. In fact I believe even the advert projectors still recognize you regardless...Nightwriter wrote...
I've never experimented with what happens if you stay dead. I wasn't aware anything in the game changes.

It doesn't, but I always imagined my Shepard to follow in Saren's footsteps. Being able to bypass the system might turn out to be a major advantage in the future.Nightwriter wrote...

Well, Spectres are normally supposed to be top secret agents, with everything about them being classified. In that regard, Shepard being recognized as a Spectre by everyone is somewhat of a running gag.Cra5y Pineapple wrote...
I do so i'm mister stealth man. But i'm also a Spectre so that kinda mucks up things.

And don't forget: "I am Cdr Shepard and this is my favorite shop on the Citadel."Kaiser Shepard wrote...
I'd prefer choosing that path if only it didn't make running into that reporter five minutes later so bloody awkward.

I choose it on playthroughs that I don't intend to return to Spectre status in.

Damn, I should've did that. My Shepard likes using fear as a weapon.

Indeed, which is the exact reason I never do those either. Which is a shame, as I like the salarian storekeeper who is an admirer of Shepard, lying to him always makes me feel bad.AngryFrozenWater wrote...

Keep yourself officially dead... then 5 minutes later get a news interview from a reporter... kinda makes the "officially dead perk" obsolete.

Yes, my renegade infiltrator remained officially dead. Why? Because it would help with the whole infiltration thing...
Shepards do not infiltrate...

Just imagine the popularity her show will gain, though! An interview with the Spectre who saved the galaxy and is officially dead? Awesome!PWENEFIED wrote...

Yes, I've taken to punching her in the face in both ME1 and ME2. I'm hoping to punch her in the face again in ME3 as well and then question her sanity on interviewing someone repeated who punches her in the face each time. lolRamgigon wrote...
