I don't get the love for the Revenant.

The major downside I find is its main draw: its massive ammo capacity.
I just find it a bore. It's almost too reliable. I love having to carefully manage my Vindicator or Mattock reserves by switching between my various weapons, but with the Revenant you can sit back on the thing for an entire mission without any fear of running low (provided you're not spraying it with no care). The Vindicator and the Mattock with their more limited reserves just feel more dynamic. I know no one's forcing me to sit back on the Revenant, but it almost feels wasteful not to.
This is more a flaw in my way of thinking of the weapon I suppose, I just honestly can't see any reason to take it in place of anything else. Especially when the Widow is an option in its place (and I like to switch between the widow and the viper, mission dependent).
I've not tried it on anything other than soldier, perhaps I'm missing some kind of better class synergy with the thing? Husks are obviously a lot of fun to tear through, but they don't appear often enough to be a major plus.

I'm not wasting my Soldier's Collector Ship choice on that thing anymore.

Personally though, I always hated the Vindicator. It doesn't SOUND good and it certainly doesn't have the Rambo feel of the Revenant. The burst fire is also overkill sometimes, and the pause between bursts is extremely annoying in Adrenaline Rush.
The Revenant is in my opinion made to be the ultimate soldier weapon. It's supposed to be imprecise but make up for it with a constant stream of high damage shots. It fits perfectly with Adrenaline Rush too, with no annoying pauses or having to reload in the middle of it.
It's what the soldier class was made for. You are Rambo, and you are holding a big freaking gun, shooting in bullet time.
Sadly, the Revenant just doesn't doesn't live up to it in terms of damage. Boosting its damage doesn't work either, because that would make it extremely overpowered. I still completely understand why some people like it though, and you certainly won't have any problems finishing the game with it on any difficulty.

I guess my playstyle just doesn't suit it. I prefer staying slightly away from the main battle, sending my squadmates in to take the brunt of the attack, while i pick off prime targets from further field.
Are their any other classes the Revanant works well with? Or perhaps I should be thinking hardened rush soldier and getting up close and personal more?

And yes, a large part of where Revenant shines is watching the big things burn.

[I die too often] but my Revvy Soldier likes to move as far forward as he can get away with so he can "let rip" with the Revvy. As long as you understand the tradeoffs it's still a viable role-play choice.
Note: Mattock + Widow seems like the "only" choice if you're going after a surgical feel but still want to be able to open up some if the need arises.

Really? I think the only thing the Mattock has on the Revenant is accuracy, and there is really no gun that finishes enemies as quickly...also all you have to do is burst fire, especially with the accuracy upgrade...also the Revenant owns mini-bosses, makes gunship/praetorians/harbingers ridiculously easy...its pretty much hands down the best gun in the game, as it should be........i havent died on insanity with it and im a xbox player

The Mattock does more than double the damage per shot, and can fire much, MUCH faster. Add to that next to no recoil and accuracy incredible enough to hit any target at any range, and you have a weapon that slaughters the Revenent's utility.
The only thing that the Revenant has over the Mattock is ammo capacity, but the Mattock gets a lot of ammo from pickups, and kills quickly enough that you will usually pick up more ammo than you spend.

The Mattock only outshines the Revvy in Adrenaline Rush or if your far away and chaining headshots constantly. Mattock is TOTAL BEAST in Adrenaline Rush
I still prefer the Revvy because when fully upgraded you can kill 4 or 5 normal enemies with a single clip while with the Fully upgraded Mattock you can only kill 2 outside Adrenaline Rush and that's IF you get headshots.
A lot of people claim the Revvy is inaccurate but just like it takes skill to get consecutive headshots people can learn to go full-auto at medium range and be very accurate.
I love both guns but if I'm going for headshots I'll pull out my HP or SR I just love fighting at short and medium-short range with my Revvy and GPS.

I think the Mattock outshines the Revenant in terms of raw dps, AR or not.
However, the Revenant is still one of my favorite weapons. I just prefer Widow + Mattock over Revenant + Viper/Mantis because of how much of beast Widow is in Heightened AR.
Agreed. The muzzle climb is noticable outside AR, but you can quite easily compensate without ever releasing the trigger.A lot of people claim the Revvy is inaccurate but just like it takes skill to get consecutive headshots people can learn to go full-auto at medium range and be very accurate.
Anyway, don't let balance get in the way of fun in a single-player game. The Revenant was a beast before the Mattock and it still is, even though Mattock has higher DPS. This is not an MMO (thank god it isn't!). Nobody is going to post damage meters and laugh at you.

It's so far from the best gun in the game. In fact, there is no 'best'. As the game is so easy on it's highest setting (once you're used to it), it becomes a matter of preference over any kind of DPS or number crunching worry.
And as the Rev doesn't even have the highest DPS...

Well now I've heard everything. I'd never have thought that reliability would be a detriment.
I'd think that Shep would have enough challenges with Collectors shooting at him without injecting his own challenges by shorting himself on ammo so he could experience the thrill of figuring out when he'd get another thermal clip.

It just gets boring for me when the Rev, being so reliable, can be used for the entire mission. Sometimes I'm right at the end of a long mission and realise I haven't switched weapons once and have kind of sleepwalked the thing simply because the Rev has such ridiculous capacity.
As I said, it's more down to my playstyle with the thing than a fault of the design of the weapon itself.

I just wanted some feedback from others to see if I could find a new perspective on the weapon. Hence me asking if I'd missed some kind of synergy with class or build or whatever.
I just completed the Planet Aequitas anomaly mission (the Husk mines) with the Rev, and I've found a new love for it. I think perhaps I hadn't given it enough time before.

I've played through a couple of times with my Soldier, and both times when I got to the Collector ship, I couldn't help but pick the Widow. I'd really like to try out the Revenant, but my obsession for destructive sniper rifles always gets the better of me.
I used the ini config hack to unlock all three weapons. You should try it some time if you can't help but take the Widow.
