I am not the least disappointed by any of these changes and bits of information.

Thank you for it.

No, the article states clearly that for each action you'll have to push a button. I would like too some kind of feedback on that issue but honestly... at that point I'm only waiting for an actual gameplay video coverage.

PS: Quote from the OP. "The decision to allow melee attacks to be activated by continually
striking X is an inspired decision too, in spite of how derivative some
may claim it is... the power to be responsible for each and every blow
is much more satisfying."

Posted ImagePosted ImageAnd how is that in any way different than Origins?  The basic attack was done automatically, but everything was activated by button press.  For that matter, it was on PC too, you just clicked something instead of pressing something.

@RubbishHero: They are showing the PC version along with the X-Box 360 version in Germany.

"making Dragon Age II newcomer friendly"

This dreadful little tidbit nearly outweighs all the good things I read. 'Newcomer friendly'...ugh.

Thank you for the information! :)

Well despite my initial and lingering disappointments, the game still does sound like it has the potential to be pretty epic.

Should it not be friendly to newcomers?

Most likely making casual a lot easier than it was in DA:O, a lot of people still occasionally complain that DA:O is too hard on casual.

If our Warden is to make a cameo, I sure hope DA2 will accept mods, otherwise some people's Wardens are going to look pretty funny...

Most likely they'll simply just cover their face with a helmet.

If that's all it means, no problem. I just don't want a casual game.

To be fair, Starcraft II did an extremely good job of being true to it roots while adding new stuff and making the game completely available to new players. While understandably, Bioware aren't Blizzard, have sold out and made a completely different game altogether for the sake of  maximizing sales, Starcraft was at least Starcraft and not Halo Wars.

Though the 360 Article was a mix of some things the close monitoring community is already aware of, there were some *really* interesting new pieces. Out of all of those I think the one that I enjoyed the most was the indication that your class, rather then your point of Origin, will have a larger impact on how you are percieved by others in the game world. The Image in my ID is that of one my past Melee characters, my "Canon" character (who's portrait does not appear in my Image options) has always been a Mage. In DAO there were very few observations made about my class. I was just The Warden. Really, unless you were an Elf no one in Fereldan really seemed to care that you were a Circle Mage turned Warden save for poor Jory and one or two Chantry Revered Mothers. One of the things I found somewhat frustrating was that the only Origin that got Alot of attention in the later story was the Cousland Origin, but, sadly, you couldn't be a Cousland who was a Mage, so for me that extra bit of story is out the window. With Dragon Age 2 if being a Mage will play a more important Role in the overall story, that's pretty damn awesome.

Another Great point touched on in the Article is that companions will be off doing their own things while the Warden and certain other Companions are away. It was always strange to leave the camp and come back to find everyone in the *exact* same spot you left them in hours before, then talk to them and they didn't have anything new to say, as if they were just sitting on a shelf waiting for you to come back, like a power tool. If DA2's companions will have interactions with one another when you're not around and even have their own behind the scenes activities that you're not privy to that would be a huge boon to the immersion factor which is already a well oiled machine after BioWare's many titles.

Lastly, though I haven't read the Article myself, I have to wonder if the "Warden Cameo" that was hinted at was perhaps the Article's author, or the OP, jumping to conclusions. If you think about it, the chance of our DAO Warden showing up is a bit slim given that there are a few hurdles BioWare would have to jump in order to facilitate the appearence of The Warden in Dragon Age 2's new format. First and Foremost, unless the Warden was just going to be standing there speechless ala Gordon Freeman, it would mean BioWare would be giving our Warden voiced dialogue. Right now I just don't see them going that route especially with all the Drama about DA2's new Voiced PC. *If* the Warden does show, and that's a big if, it will likely be that we see the Warden at a distance, fighting some battle that we ourselves fought in DAO. That's really the only thing I can think of.

Overall, these few new nuggets of Gold only make the wait all the more painful. I don't want them to rush an already Tight development cycle, but words can not express how much I wish I had a TARDIS all my own

So, naturally, Dragon Age 2 should be an impenetrable fortress emblazoned with a "No Noobs Allowed" sign, as opposed to something anyone interested in the story can pick up... Right. Even as a lover of the first Dragon Age, making it "newcomer friendly" is a good move for any game, no matter how deep into a series it is.

Whoops, late. Herp derp.

*grabs cane*  We didn't need newcomer friendly back when I was playing Ghosts and Goblins.... *shakes fist *

Considering the fact that Dragon Age: 2 features a new protagonist and storyline, I would say game is already "newcomer friendly" when compared to a sequels like Mass Effect 2 or Starcraft 2.

I don't understand the parts about........each press of the X button will unleash a melee attack. Does that mean if you switch to your mage party member during a battle, that your warrior stands around doing nothing, or he just auto swings with the same melee attack on his own?

If he autoswings, what is the point of this X attack addition?

Posted ImagePosted ImageHelps to make you feel like you're doing something instead of just sitting and watching and gives it a more immersive and action-oriented feel.  I don't think it's a problem on the PC, but it can feel weird on the console to just be auto-attacking since you're usually doing something with the controller.  It keeps it moving.

I assume the AI will handle attacking by itself when you aren't controlling a specific character.

Ok, makes sense. From my point of view it just seems silly that if I am not controlling my character at the time, he will attack. But if I am controlling him, I must hit the x button frantically.

I really don't like it, would make more sense to keep the auto attack, it isnt' very exciting anyway, whether you control it or not. Instead, lower the cooldown and stamina costs of a few truly cool manuevers, so that when you hit the x button every 4 seconds, something cool happens, rather than just tapping x as fast as you can.

edit: kinda sounds like the ME2 implementation of lower cooldowns eh?

- Grey Wardens will be in Dragon Age 2, but they're pushed to the sidelines this time around.

- "Will there be a new threat in this game?" "... yes!"

- Hints were dropped that we might bump into our Origins Warden at some point.

- You can customise individual spells, tweaking things like damage and knockback strength.

- Rogue, Warrior and Mage all feel very unique and different now.

- The atmosphere of the game is far more cutting and dark.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssssssss

Posted ImagePosted ImageWe don't really know if you can spam X, though most people seem to be assuming that.  There could still be a swing animation that lasts for a second or so before you hit X again and trigger a repeat, or possibly a slightly different animation for variety.  And if you're using talents during fights, there'll probablly be even less rapid tapping.

I felt the same way, but I'm maintaining hope that all this means is keeping the Tutorials option and rehashing some of the basic setting information for those that didn't play Origins (ie, explaining the idea of the Chantry, the political systems, and things like the Circle of Magi and the Grey Wardens in a way that gives you the important information while making it seem as though Hawke knew it all along).

EDIT: speeling
