Not anymore unfortunately....And hasnt existed for at least 20 years or so.  Maybe less give or take a year or two.  Hence part of the reason why Im not complaining about DA2.  It's still humorous though to listen to folks complain about a game that hasnt even launched yet.  And even more humorous to watch them think that BioWare is going to suddenly scrap DA2 and go with the DAO formula simply because they are complaining.  Humorous for me, but naive for them.

Well a good developer would listen and make the game the fans want.

Not really.  Bioware chases the money.  Honestly, I wouldn't have bought ME2 if I knew how much it had changed; my fault for not doing research.  If DA2 does worse than DA:O, chances are decent that we won't see the Ninja Gaiden gameplay in the next game in the series.  Every fence-sitter informed potentially helps.

Lol no. Adventure games sell like crap. Probably because that´s what they are....

From the top of my head.

Dreamfall, monkey Island, Quest for Glory, the dig, Sam'n Max, Space Quest, Police Quest, Simon the sorcerer, Fate of Atlantis, Under a Killing Moon, Grim Fandango.

All those are seriouly great.. And those where just the ones I could think about in 5 seconds. Im sure the early adventure games outsold the early and good Ultimas (Before the serie turned into crap.).

I'm a big adventure game fan too, but Trigon is actually right about them selling like crap, they only appeal to a very limited audience. Monkey Island 2 is often acknowledged as one of the best adventure games of all time, but according to Tim Schafer it only sold 25,000 copies.

I think NWN 2 is nearest it could come to a true RPG + OMG potential.... I am NOT talking about the story. I am talking about the character creation and leveling. It is perhaps because it was based on the DnD franchise.....

Says more about you then it dose about the games.

All these are great classics and any gamer worth his salt would at least know of these.

Never heard of Monkey Island...I cannot look on a gaming site for more than 2 minutes without seeing a reference...and I don't even like adventure games...

People don't play adventure games 'cos it actually requires you to use your brain. It's sad really, people miss out on a lot of really awesome stories.

Monkey Island is probably the funniest series you'll ever play, right along Sam & Max. Broken Sword series have one of the greatest stories of all time (except the 4th, that didn't happen). Syberia is one of the most beautiful games ever. And no Terry Pratchett fan should ever miss out on the Discworld series.

The less brain power the game requires, the bigger the sales, which is why adventure games don't sell well

Is anyone really buying RPG games because the combat is hard?

While I don't know about DA 2's difficulty -most of you must have already finished the game -

inventory, skills, tactical combat, leveling up, customisation options and stats are still there, so you are making things up.

And Mass Effect was never supposed to be a classic RPG.

Adventure games are awesome, but they've long been a niche genre - maybe ever since interactive text adventure stopped being viable commercial prospects in the eighties. Despite that, great games are still being released by small publishers that target that niche. I've just finished playing Scratches, which was very good, and I'm looking forward to Grey Matter later this year.

You sure you can provide developer quotes for all of those statements?  Because I don't think you can.

Bioware is trying to actually innovate in its own franchise, trying to improve things. That means change, sometimes change that some of us may not like.

I personally loved DAO for its old school feel, and I must admit to being somewhat wary of what I hear, but at the same time I am confident I will still love DA2, if perhaps not as much. After all, I certainly loved ME2 despite the reduction of the RPG elements.

That said, concerning DA2, no one has ever mentioned reducing or "dumbing" down basic RPG elements except for the greater restriction on character creation. And on a practical level the only restriction is that there will be only 1 origin, and you must be human.

Of course, if what you look for in an RPG is having a completely blank slate of a character, then I can see why this would be a problem, and why you would be disappointed with most modern RPGs. I am not sure if anyone will ever make big budget RPGs like that anymore (technically Morrowind/Oblivion give you a blank slate, but of course combat is more action), the genre has moved on IMO, and now the focus is on delivering a good story (which usually requires a more restricted player "origin"). I do contend, however, that having an absolute blank slate for a PC is not a requirement for a game being an RPG, and Bioware's recent efforts certainly qualify as RPGs (or action-RPGs, in the case of ME/ME2 and Jade Empire).

The Game Informer article does mention those elements, or mention other elements that could not exist without those on this list still existing.

They never came out and said they were gutting ME2 of the vast majority of its RPG elements, either.

It's far and away the best derivative corridor cover shooter ever made by Bioware, I'll give it that.

Are you suggesting God of War, Diablo and Devil May Cry are forgettable titles ?

They've sold more than any BioWare game so far
