Seems like there are a few balance issues in the game. Maybe it's just my perception, but based on my experience and that of several posts here, I was thinking it might be a good idea to throw this idea out there.

Just a couple of brief observations...

The mage class seems to be heavily over powered.  I see two reasons for this.

* Penalties for using heavy armor are not enough of a burden on the mage. Forcing the mage to stick with light armors would help keep them from being capable of filling too many roles.

* The combination of the mage and cleric classes results in a single class that's too powerful. A second "healing" class and the removal of healing abilities (except through herbalism) from the mage would help to balance this aspect of the class.

Another problem is the realtive weakness of archers.

* Crossbows and, to a lesser extent, Longbows should ignore some amount of armor reduction.

Any other suggestions? I might work on this myself, but I haven't had a chance to relaly familiarize myself with the toolset yet so I don't know how practical it is.

adem,

Arms and Armor looks to address the bows as part of a later development. The longbows will require VERY high Strength (we're talking a weapon that had draw weights of nearly 200lbs! Most of it held on three fingers!) and Dex to wield, but I'm planning to give it some significant bonuses regarding its power and range, especially armor penetration. I'd like to make crossbows extremely powerful (even moreso than the longbow at close ranges) but much less accurate at range and with a poor rate of fire. To compensate, there will be practically no STR requirement (I'll be assuming these are the later types with hand cranks) with a minimal Dex requirement (the main advantage of the crossbow was you needed much less skill to use it than the longbow). Shortbows will occupy a place in between. Less power and range than the longbow, but greater range and accuracy than the crossbow.

I've been following the arms and armor project, it's the main reason I didn't mention increasing attack speed for other classes (as that would help balance the mage without nerfing them). Really looking forward to the results of your work.

Like the little I've read so far on the hardcore mod as well. Can't wait to see the results.

What I'd REALLY love to see is a DarthMod type of project (DarthMod was an AI rewrite for the Total War series that made the CPU intensely smart!), including making the enemies able to communicate (instead of peeling off small groups of a larger gang, they can communicate and you don't have 10 guys standing around wondering why those other two guys drew weapons and charged off down the hall).

To be total honest, the WoW style tactics, which center around taking advantage of poor AI (kiting and peeling) absolutely drive me batty, but I use them because that's what the game's balanced for. I want real world tactics (plus magic).
