In MotB there are shadow areas. Everything in these areas uses a gray palette. I've dissected the areas and have been unable to determine how exactly it is done. My best guess at this point is that it is done by tinting the area itself. Tinting is a grayed-out option in the export menu so I cannot export the settings and import them into a new area.
Anyone know how to tint an area with the toolset?

I believe you need to check the desaturate colour checkbox and set the desaturation intensity (0 for greyscale, 1 for full colour) in the area properties for the Day/Night cycle stages to get the MotB area effect.
I desaturate the colour a little in all my areas to make the graphics look a bit less cartoonish (or perhaps the colour is too high on my monitor).
To tint the area in another colour you would have to play with the area lighting.

Thanks. I had tried exporting all of the day night cycle settings from the motb area into my new area using the export/import option but that did not work. I guess something is wrong with that toolset function. Exporting and importing just the default settings almost worked, but I still had to manually select the desaturate checkbox and set the desaturation factor to 0.1. Thanks again.

Yes, and desaturation isn't something the toolset actually displays either, so there's no way to see what it looks like without loading the areas ingame.

I think that the Dark Waters campaign also had a "grey area". Maybe you could check that out and see how it works. I think it was near the beginning.
