Hi,

I just bought Awakening from Amazon for PC. Unfortunately, my disc drive has decided to stop recognising discs. So the install menu wont come up. It's quite frustrating.

So I thought I'd download it from Steam instead. Get all the way to the purchase screen and it says I need Dragon Age before I can purchase Awakening. Well I have Dragon Age but not through steam. I've tried adding it as a non-steam game but it still won't let me buy it.

I can't post on Steam forums because my account is in a queue to be activated. It's all a bit of a joke really. I just want to play this damn game!

Any help appreciated :)

Sorry, but to purchase Awakening on Steam, you have to purchase first Dragon Age: Origins on Steam (or purchase both at the same time with a special offer). There is no other option available.

Is that not completly ridiculous? I'm sure there are other people out there like me who bought the first on CD and want the second on Steam? What the hell! Well I can't wait until I get forum activation and I can rant on their forums about how stupid that is.

Guess I gotta get my CD drive fixed, which wont be any time soon. Grr....

Awakening is not a standalone game but a mere DLC for Dragon Age (you can see it in the DLC page for Dragon Age here).

Jesus christ. So I've put the Awakening CD I bought on Ebay to sell it. I downloaded it from EA. 2 hours later I now find out I need the original Dragon Age CD to play Awakening. WHAT THE ****.

Gonna have to get my disc drive fixed then. Why can't I load the game without the CD? God I wish I hadn't bothered getting this expansion at all.

This was EA's concession to gamers in favor of less invasive DRM.  At least Dragon Age doesn't use SecuROM or StarForce.  Anyway, I've been pretty shocked at how inexpensive new DVD drives are.  I think my last was around $30.00.  Good luck!

Yeah but I'm a noob and have no idea how to install these things. Not to mention it'll take days to arrive (web cheaper than going to a store). I'm just disappointed :( Had a whole night of DA fun lined up and now I'm sitting here on Youtube!

I'm guessing SecuROM or StarForce are systems that ask for all of your private details?

Nope-- SecuROM runs a cloaked service that seems to fire up your DVD drives when you boot up, access Explorer, or anything else. Stupid me finally installed NWN 2, and my drives have been noisy ever since. StarForce rewrites your system drivers, and sometimes utterly destroys your ability to use your drives.

Installing a DVD drive's actually pretty simple-- you might need to tweak a jumper setting, but the manual will tell you how. Other than that, it's two plugs after you've screwed the drive into your case.

I guess I could learn, there's a first for everything and I have a brain.

Any particular DVD drives to look out for? I don't wanna break the bank!

Thanks for your help :)

Wish I had some tips for you.  Both my drives are long since phased out. But I can tell you that both my Pioneer and NEC drives have served me well and faithfully for years now.  I think the NEC drive came with my old Dell 6 years ago or so, and the Pioneer drive I bought for our old server about three years ago.  Quick advice: you're going to want to check to see whether you're using a parallel or SATA cable currently in your computer when you order the new drive.  They either come in parallel ATA versions or SATA-- no drive can use both connectors.
