I go back and forth...both annoy me to some extent or another...but Ash is a bit more tolerable.

But then I like either one over Liara...*shrugs*

I prefer Liara to Ash as an LI...however, I still usually save Ash on my male sheps, except in two cases. It was interesting, and not really worse in ME2 with this import.

See, I didn't find this worked.  On my first playthrough, my Shep was romancing Kaidan and let him sacrifice himself on Virmire.  The emotion dissonance was awful - I felt horrendous, but my Shepard showed nothing.  Eventually, I found it so annoying that I went back and sacrificed Ash instead.

But that was a purely player-based decision (I was going for the more dramatic and emotionally powerful story).  One can make a roleplaying-based decision too.
