This may be a stupid question, but why aren't consoles compatible with a keyboard and mouse via usb port?

If I owned a console, this would be a great option.

I do believe that there's a few accessories that work as a keyboard / mouse, although they tend to be very expensive (60-70$+) and optional.

I've connected my keyboard to my 360 via usb port. I think it depends on which console type? Hmm, not really sure.
EDIT: There are accessories you could buy, but I don't have that sort of disposable income.

PS2 had mouse and keyboard support.
Whenever gamers from 360/PS3 get paired up against PC gamers in an FPS competition, they get thoroughly demolished. Not ragging on the skill of the console players, though.

It just seems this should have been a readily available option for consoles long ago.

Imagine, maybe some day, an RTS for console.

And even before Halo Wars: Starcraft 64! I hear it didn't turn out well.

I wouldn't really have a use for it, so I don't mind that it wasn't an option. I've only used it to send messages because I don't feel like spending money on a "chat pad".

The console version will be more A-D-D. The pc version, because the gameis being built for console games now, will be a Mass Effect hybrid that regardless of pc features, will still feel very much like a console game. Graphically, all pc gamers look better. Consolewise, it's difficult to say as it's preference, however, the mouse and keyboard are
superior for precision, speed and overall complexity.

Analog controls could never be as accurate.

Sony was more willing to allow players to 'mod' their experience, in that they could customize their systems, though I think they are leading away from this and more into Microsofts direction.

I'm old enough to appreciate PC gaming back in the early days so I will never fully convert to consoles. :D Modding and the best graphics possible are worth the extra money I put into my PC.

I'm lacking to see the point of having games support mouse/keyboard on the console? That defeats the entire purpose of a console system.

EDIT: That came across as b*tchy, wasn't trying to be lol.

Sony/MS decision, I don't know why.

The important thing to keep in mind is this: is you decide you want to buy a PC, buy the best system you can afford, it will last for at least 4 years. If you don't have much then buy a console. Keep in mind however, the console can't play every type/genre of game. You'll eventually have to upgrade (buy a new one) that as well. I think a console lasts what 4 to 6 years. But I guess here lies the real difference. If a console is out of date then you really have no choice but to get a new one. If a computer is out of date then you can buy individual components, which is way cheaper.

You also have to keep in mind that console games are usually more expensive than PC games.

In the end, though, it really depends on the individual case. If you have enough money, then you should definitely buy a PC, this, in my opinion, is best in the long run (especially now when you have graphics cards like ATi HD which can use a system called CrossFire to link two graphics cards together, thus removing the need to buy more expensive hardware when upgrading). Not to mention the numerous graphical differences between PC's and consoles. A game will always look better on the PC.

Feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken.

Actually that could be a given option to the players. Isn't the console propose give the best experience to the players? I find a mouse/keyboard so much easier to use in games (minus side scrollers).
But that could also create confusion for some users. So let's leave it as it is.^_^

Sony/MS decision, I don't know why.

It would double the testing load on QA.  They'd need to test the whole game with the controller interface and then again with KBM.

Plus the UI would need to be redone (compare console ME to PC ME - the UI is completely different), and that takes up space.  360 games, in particular, don't have much extra space on that disc.

Having mouse and keyboard support on consoles, as well as games that utilized them, would provide more options for console gamers without spending $1,200 for a pc.  And Bioware wouldn't have to spend their time programing two separate battle systems for DA2.

I'm probably being naive here, but it's just how I see it.

Edit: Sylvius just answered my question.

Yes but that's what PC gaming is for. Console is with controllers. Why change it now when it's been like that for years? Obviously people like it just the way it is.

From what I've heard, they're going to edit the console version to be more about faster gameplay instead of tactics. The computer version will keep the normal "pause and issue orders" kind of set-up.

And, as always, graphics are much better on the PC version, which also includes modding and custom textures.

I've already pre-ordered for the PC because I like the tactical battles. Kind of brings a sense of real warfare into play instead of just charging your enemy lines. I also like the freedom to edit textures and models as I see fit.

I would say it depends on your personal preference for these kinds of video games as to whether or not you like the fast paced battle, or just a sit back and issue orders.

Incidentally, $1,200 is pretty steep unless you're building a cutting-edge PC.

I wouldn't spend more than $800 on a gaming PC.  I'm not counting the monitor, but then no one ever counts the TV when claiming that consoles are cheaper, so that seems fair to me.

The chances of somebody having a television laying around already is more likely than a monitor, though.

EDIT: <3 my TV that also works as my monitor.

Built mine for $600, case included. And no, not including the monitor. I could use an upgraded graphics card, but only to push it to elite capabilities, highly unneccessary to play 99% of games.

BTW:  When playing games, I use my TV as the monitor Posted Image

I know. I'm a PC gamer=]. I was just discussing the possibility. But thinking again it wasn't going to work, not at this point.
