Hi!

I'm running Win 7 64 bit, Direct X 10, nVidia 260 GTX with newest drivers, and the NWN2 game with Betrayer and Zehir runs fine (I fully patched the game yesterday on a fresh install).
My problem is with the toolset-- which crashes with a "stoped working" error message every time I try and launch it.

I have tried but have not been helped by all of the following:

Running the Direct X updater straight off the NWN2 disk in case there was some digital signature problem or holdup

 Running it as Administrator

Running it as Administrator in WinXP compatibillity modes, once with service pack 2 checkmarked & then again with SP 3 checkmarked instead

I've run my (as-usual fully-updated) Kaspersky Internet Security but it finds no trojans, viruses, etc.

I've run a Defragmentation of the hard drive (which I do every couple weeks anyway) but this problem won't stop.

My .net version showing in Control panel is 1.1.  I've heard that Win 7 has all .nets up to 3.5 standard anyway so I even tried deleting the .net 1.1 (which I think LoTRO put in there a while back ago) but it didn't help-- the toolset still insta-crashed with the same error message no matter what I've tried.

Is the NWN2 toolset just not compatible with Win 7 64 bit or something?  Or what am I missing here?  Is there a manual patch I can download from somewhere?  I already patched NWN2 with Betrayer and Zehir through NWN2's patcher until it said "Done" just yesterday.

Download and INSTALL:
Direct X 9.0c Redistributable
This is NOT AN UPDATE OR DOWNGRADE! This is an older, non-compatible version of Direct X. Both Vista and Win7 do NOT ship with DX 9 -- at all, not even a little bit, uh uh, nope, don't got it.

Guess what? Sometimes the toolset will open in Win7 even without doing this, but sometimes, it just seems to want to have it. And this varies by system to system, not by moment or instance on the same system randomly, so take heart.

Additionally, try installing the .net Framwork from the NWN2 Original disc. (And DON'T delete .net stuff -- not a good idea anyway. Each update is built on the older layers, to my understanding, so deleting backbone or foundation files (ne: 1.1) is probably, in chess terms, A VERY BAD MOVE.) The ,net installation will most likely tell you that you have a newer version and it can't be responsible for your actions (or may flatly deny you the opportunity) though sometimes, making this attempt seems to 'activate' the feature of .net that the toolset seems to need to have that, depending on your system hardware and peripherals, might not get loaded on first start when you get the new OS.
Any further difficulty, by all means, come back and ask. We'll do what we can.

Hi!

Um, the Direct X 9.0c download from the exact link above "failed" in its own words, lol, probably because I already have Direct X 10 in my Win 7 64 bit. It refused to finish installing.

The .net 2.0 64 on the NWN disk wouldn't install either, because it said it was already provided in Windows 7.

Neither attempt jarred anything into waking up and working, and the NWN2 toolset still crashes instantly with the same exact error as usual. But thanks anyway. ;) I appreciate the effort.

For the record, I just deleted and reinstalled the whole game (with Kaspersky disabled, which I always do when installing anyway) but it didn't help.  The toolset still crashes when I try and open it with the same error message.

Has anyone actually gotten this toolset to run on Win 7 64 bit with an Nvidia card?

It isn't 9.0c you need, you need this:  www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx

It's an earlier version of 9.0 from March 2009.  It's not overwritten by later versions and you have to have it for the Toolset to work.  I had the same problem w/ similar specs and it worked for me.

There's also the version that comes on your NWN2 disc.

Thanks for all the help, gang!

I tried running the DX off the NWN2 disk already though, and it didn't help.

I will try Rythorn's link next, IF he is sure that he is using it in co-existence with Direct X 10 (which I need for some of my other games) with Windows 7.

Oh yeah, by the way, my daughter's machine, which has Win 7 64 bit as well with only the standard Direct X 10 that Win 7 provides but has an ATI Radeon 4890 video card, fires up the toolset fine, lol.

I shall prevail.

Get the correct version of direct x and you'll have no more trouble... of this sort.

Both versions co-exist perfectly well on the same computer.

I'd just like to confirm that Rythorn's link for the DirectX 9 runtime also worked for me (it will ask you where to extract files, give it a folder, then run dxsetup.exe).

thanks!

(On windows 7 64bit, freshly installed and updated NWN2)
