God I just realised how much I would miss the inventory if it was removed. I always took it for granted, but it's a huge part of the game.
Agreed my friend. Having an inventory is a must in a game like this! It gives a very good depth to the game world carrying lots of stuff around from vanquished foes. Also, it's still the best way of using a trade system in games, IMO

Inventory tetris does not provide some kind of high intellectual achievement. This is why the issue of dumbing down is so confusing. Take MS-DOS and Windows, or manual and automatic transmission. Is the fact that something is less complicated and has far less aggravating steps in between a sign that it is for less intelligent people?
Certainly a lot less masculine people, in the case of automatic transmissions.
It is funny you chose automatic transmissions as an analogy, though. Simpler to use? Certainly. Dumbed down? Yes. You have less control of your vehicle, and your vehicle's making decisions rather than you with an automatic. Presumably so that the driver can focus more attention on applying lipstick.

With all those changes that we see, that strip bit by bit every RPG element old fans loved and bring the game closer to ME2 to satisfy console combat gamers-I wonder...Will there be an inventory system in Dragon Age 2? Or will the dreaded "Hawke" choose his combat gear between missions just like in ME2?
Two things:
A.) Yes, there will be an inventory system in DA2.
B.) This wasnt so much of a serious concern on the OPs behalf I think as it was a sarcastic jab at bioware for making Hawke a voiced character and taking away race choice etc. To that, I point you to my signature and say get over it already please. Thanks and have a pleasant stay lol

We don't know yet.
Could you describe the ME2 system ? Im not familiar with this ?
The inventory system in ME1 was so bad, they improved it by removing inventory in ME2.
I recently tried Ultima I on C64 just for fun, and it had a better inventory system than ME1. Seriously.

Basically you get several categories of weapons to choose from (shotguns, pistols, assault rifles, heavy weapons) and can only carry one of each. You can't change them in the middle of a mission; you have to wait until there's a special 'Weapons Loadout' station somewhere if you want to change whatever weapon type you currently happen to be carrying (change from a specific type of pistol to a differnt pistol, for example).
You also have to find these weapon upgrades in special spots.
Hehehehe I read that and thought you were describing how Dragon Effect 2 extreme casual combat is going to work. And hey that is how its going to work anyway

Ah, because a series of complicated manuevers to achieve the same thing, that is obviously the sign of greater intelligence. Indeed, I have far less control of the car when I am not gear shifting. Specifically, my control of the wheels decreases by at least 43.22%, not to mention that my mirror manipulating capacity drops by 21.47%, and...
Oh, wait, no, that's not true at all. At best you can see that you're potentially getting worse milleage, but aside from that?

I notice that people complaining that stripping out the inventory system would "dumb down" the game aren't clamoring for a system that tracks weight and volume in a realistic way.
The only game that I played that came close to doing what you mentioned was Oblivion. I did not like that system at all. I usually don't put the things away because I never knew if I would need them. Picking up an item and ending up just 1 point over the weight limit annoyed me several times.

If I remember correctly, Arcanum's inventory did this. You had a certain amount of space (tiles) in your pack, and different items took up different amount of space. Gemstones might only take 1 tile, a small shield 4, armor 6, etc. And I believe there was a weight limit as well. But it was not without problems. I'm pretty sure I did indeed frequently have to go through the inventory due to being 1 stone over the limit. But it did have a handy auto-sort function, where it reorganized your pack to stick all the space at the end (rather than you have to always move pieces around, like Tetris, to make room for stuff).shnizzler93 wrote...

But hey, it does apparently free you up to do your make-up. Because apparently that is all that people who drive automatics care about. We are the console gamers of driving. In Exile wrote...

This is the core question that will decide whether I buy DA2 or not. Because that's the reason I love RPGs so much---Inventory. Management.
The rest I can take or leave.
While your sarcasm is noted - I think its a valid question given the transition from ME - ME2 and the early revealed changes from DAO - DA2.
The fact that this is a Kordaris thread prevents me from responding seriously. But sure, it is a valid question.

After every battle, if you are "AWESOME" enough in your DA2 battle rank screen summary, you will be awarded
DORITOS for the Crunch Time fighter of the round! With a good enough "battle rank" for air combos and enemy juggling, you get awarded a a bag of Doritos to CRUNCH on which gives a temporary boost to "Epic Crunchtime Moshing!" stat
After RANK UP screens following the dialog tree, if you pick the BaddAss choice, you will be awarded
Old Spice Bar of Swagger! Kill Dragons like a Man, Man! which increases your "Swagger Smell" rating so you can romance Miranda 2.0

Because a game about magic wardens killing dragons should be "realistic"?
This isn't Army Training simulator, it's a videogame.
You can have *both* complexity and fantasy. Or you can have simple and fantasy, like ME2. Simple straightforward shooter w/ high fantasy grade C- story.
Fact: ME1 inventory system was weak. Fact: Instead of fixing it, Bioware simply removed it.
Fact: removing multiple classic RPGs features is considered "dumbing down" by most RPG gamers. The RPG developers will call this "streamlining"

Mass Effect 2 had an inventory, just because it wasn't done how you liked it doesn't mean it wasn't there. You could get new armor pieces, color your armor, get new guns. It has an inventory system. You just weren't finding all the useless annoying stuff like in other roleplaying games
Is this how you're going to argue it? Semantics? Why don't you actually post your real opinion instead of trying to "win" the debate.

since D&D popularized the "bags of enormous capacity" the endless inventory has been a feature of rpgs.
if there were realistic weight handling, there would be no inventory. Nobody carries around two shields and three swords, much less 35 and 15
