 HOLY CRAP!!

ok.. got that out of my system...

I'm running ubuntu karmic RC (x64), installed wine1.2 from the repos...

And the dragon age character creator "just worked" (installed and ran) , amazingly I might add...

Why have I not seen his mentioned anywhere?

now I just need to see if the full game runs the same, and if the steam install of the game runs the same.

Most gamers don't use Linux for gaming in the first place, so whether it would work or not was never a big deal.

That's sort of cool.. However. This doesn't garantee that the game will work on Linux. Does it?

even if it does, there is a large gap between "it works" and "it works flawlessly".

How about the fancy graphic options? Online connectivity? Mods?.

All that you simply won't know until you try. Even then it could be a long path of trial and error if you aren't lucky.

Considering the hundreds of signatures to petition a linux port, this is big news.

Lets hope that the game itself works as well =)

Good for you people! It'd still be less trouble if you installed W7 or something. Just knowing that you won't have ANY trouble playing a game or installing an app makes it work every penny.

This is interesting. This would be good news for all the Linux gamers out there (and there are a lot of them)

Considering the install base of Linux, at least people who have Linux and intend to play games in Linux, is very small, it doesn't justify the development costs to port the game to a Linux environment.

Forgive the internet but every time I read this it uses a sarcastic voice in my head. Is that wrong?

Most gamers don't use linux to game only because generally most games won't run. Most Linux gamers would however love to use linux.. So this IS a big deal if it does in fact run.

Windows runs the majority of games better only because the majority of games are written for Windows and frequently use proprietary calls. NOT because it is a superior operating system.

Don't get me wrong, Windows is a fine operating system, but so is linux. Let me ask you this how much Mac software do you see able to run in Windows flawlessly?

Linux is about Freedom, community, and a transparency of both ideals and knowledge (You'd be surprised how much proprietary, Windows or otherwise code is based on the knowledge developed with open source) Thereby how many computing advances you get to enjoy even if you don't use Linux that exist solely because of Linux or other open source initiatives. By supporting Linux or it's other open source Unix based alternatives, you not only make an operating system choice, but assist in the ideal as well. That is why people are so fanatic.

If you only enjoy computers for what they can do for you, and have little desire to help the cause of computer knowledge and advancement.. It's fine that you prefer Windows, but don't mock or deny the people who make many of your computer based enjoyments possible a bone every now and then.

Although it is true the linux base is comparatively small, and linux gamers even smaller.. I think you'll find there is more to the equation. That small group of people are frequently fanatic in their devotion to those companies who devote even a trivial amount of resources to the "Cause" of open source. I think we're all familiar with the cry of SPARTA by now. It's good to have a fanbase that devoted to your company and product.

^ I totally second that.

People who are mocking linux are often the kind who don't understand one damn bit about computers. The most annoying imo are those apple fanboys. The retarded Mac OS won't even let you fck things up if you want to, it's so limited and protected. Don't even compare it with windows or linux. Those who care more about computers, want to try things out should really check linux (most popular distribution Ubuntu) or are already using it off course. But for gaming you should really stick to windows.

yea.. to be clear about what I mean by "it works" is i started the builder up in 1920x1080, maxed graphics out, made an dalish rogue, then uploaded it to this service .

I've now uninstalled and am installing via steam to see if ti goes as well.

I'll write up some (not really needed) tutorials when I'm done and add the to the da: linux group.

And... you've got some extensive research done to back that all up, don't you?

Tought so.

If only the lowest setting works, it may be an issue with the DX 9.0c rendering path... Because I think that one uses DX 9.0b (SM 2+ATI x--- series), while the others all use DX 9.0c (SM3).

How does DX work on Linux anyway?

Running the character creater through wine is one thing, running the full game, that's something else.

a very long time, people have been playing WoW since launch (and THAT'S recent). MS Office 07 works, steam and tf2 work, (neverwinter nights had a native linux client!)

Some .exe files can be run via software called WINE.  I haven't checked the state of the project recently, but last I did it was able to run several, but not all, titles of the day.

I agree, but if they use the same 3d engine backend, this is great.

Notably I never said the whole game works, just the character creator. I wouldn't expect the game to work, but have hopes (mainly based on bioware's past linux support).
