While Oghan and Sten can put out more DPS, Alistair is fantastic at keeping stuff on him and off everyone else and not dying due to that. Shale is comparable, but I think he's the only one (playing on nightmare and maybe hard, anyway- easy and normal you can dance with your three rogue and a dog party to the end, laughing all the way). On higher difficulties, if you're not playing a tank, it's Ali or Shale- and at that point, it's mostly a personality/equipment thing.
(I'm sure someone's going to pop up and tell me that they and their rogue buddies totally beat the game on Nightmare without ever reloading and no injuries, but, er, this is just my experience. Maybe I'm not that good.)
If you're a warrior for your PC, he's not as useful- just as Mor's not as good if you're playing a mage, or Leir if you're playing a rogue. But I would say he's far from useless, especially at upper difficulties. For me personally, I find poor Dog to be useless- I just can't get him to do the DPS of the other cats.
Does any one else consider Alistair to be useless?

Alistair is great, playing on nightmare, and gave him the star metal sword. Imbued it with a grandmaster rune of paralyze and fire, excellent aggro control. Can simply tell him to attack something and chances are unless they're immune, whatever he's beating on will be paralyzed. makes it much easier to tank. I haven't gotten Shale yet, so I can't compare the two, but Alistair seems great to me so far. His shield techniques are also useful, shield bash is great for interrupting mages at close range. My party usually consists of Leliana, Alistair, Wynne, and my main, which is a rogue duelist/assassin. Party makeup seems great so far, only guy I really had trouble killing was Uldred. Admittedly, that has absolutely nothing to do with Alistair's tanking ability. If I had another healer...I'd have been able to keep everyone alive through the spirit prison spam. That spell is ****ing brutal, especially when used against your only healer.

well thanks for all your replies - I guess I will turn off auto level on those in my party anyhow. My Elven Warrior(Sword & Shield) is doing better - he has a sword that is +7 electricty(and his backup is +6 vs undead for when I get to certain parts of the game. Currently I took berserker to see what it does. You all seem to be much further along than me - but I have done all the origens - I love starting toons - seeing what toon is my best fit. I liked common dwarf rogue deulist but she is nerfed and cannot get past a certain part of the dwarven adventure(not including spoilers). Just cannot carry enough potions. I may recreate her, yes playing a female toon... cause why not. Well thanks for your replies.

If you have a ridiculously high damage party (2 or 3 mages and melee DPS) Alistair becomes less necessary since everything's dead before he can even get to it. But I find that to be overkill and less fun. With a more "traditional" party, Alistair is easily the best tank so long as you level him carefully. He has saved my human mage's squishy little behind more often than I'd care to admit.
Also, he's adorable. So there

I find myself utilizing Shale more than Alistair as a tank. When I got Shield Wall, Alistair became a solid tank. So now I kind of alternate between them. I pick Shale as an AoE damager (using Quake) rather than just tanking and activating Stone Heart. I usually use Alistair if I feel that the quest that I am getting into has specific dialogue lines from him.

He is a good tank, and he is always the trapped guy. I hate traps myself, so i keep him.

I find him extremely useful. My character and Alistair upfront, he tanks and I deal damage while Morrigan & Wynne stay back for damage and support. Seriously, pump up his Shield skills and constitution and he owns.

Once you get him some good gear, and spec him full Templar he can be pretty good. I use him when I know im going to be killing some mages. He is also my defensive tank.

Use Alistair for all my tanking needs! Full Juggernaut equipment, just lovely. He's my little meatshield, and in return I patch up his wounds.

I play with Alistair since he first joined, and so far he did a very good job. Besides that, the dialogues between him an Morrigan alone are already worth taking him.

Alistair is my tank as well and I wish he could be more. Alas...
And when geared and specc'ed for it, he makes a great one.

Alistair is my tank. He's not a good one but he isn't that bad. In every battle I have him stay as the front line defender. First thing I have him do is taunt. Sustained buffs of threaten and piercing strike. I can have Wynn cast heroic offense on him. My other characters, who are rogues, try to pick off archers or mages with arrows. If Alistair gets in a pinch they can use dirty fighting to buy him some time.
Wynn heals him a ton but so is the life of a meat shield. I get a kick out of his comments. The funniest thing I heard was when Wynn asked him about how his sock got in her bed roll.
That wasn't my sock.
Yes, it was it had your name stitched on it.

Well like all tanks, I'm finding him better as I get RUNED weapons and more buffs on him.
Think of tanks as MMO style, they are paper until they get buffed and tricked out in gear. Sadly like most RPGs, 95% of a good tank is his gear, the other 5% is taunting

I used him in my second go around of the Dalish quests and had a very hard time completing it. First time I used Sten instead of Alistair and had no problems. I had to switch him to a bow with fire arrows to complete it. He seems to die every other fight. He is now persona non grata with me. Sten is better, heck even the dog is better.
i like alistair. he's been the party member most often used. i use him and my character as my main tanks. sometimes i throw in sten and dump lilianna, or whatever her name is. the rogue. :-)

Alistair is awesome. He just takes infi damage to down, and his Templar abilities means you sick him on a mage and he just drains their mana away.

I don't know. I auto leveled all my companions, but my main character and I don't have trouble. I'm going to have to switch some of Wynne's tactics around, but Alistair is a great tank along with Shale.

Sure, Alistair is useless.
In opposite world.
Really, the guy is the number one tank in the game.

Agreed. Between Alistair and Shale, Morrigan never seems to get mussed up by fighting. I'm an Arcane Warrior, though, so now and again I'll get a little hurt, but it's par for the course since I'm too busy being awesome.

auto leveled him - that is wrong?
There seems to be a consensus that autolevel frequently makes choices that renders a lot of characters impotent. I can't testify personally because I've never used autolevel.

Hes not useless , hes my tank
I left sten in that cage to die and now I actually can't seem to get back to that town to get him lol
The dwarf warrior guy? He sucks big time
I'm a rogue
So that leaves my tank options as : Golem or Alistar , and uhh I think the golems kinda stupid (because you can't really play armor dress up with him) lol
