Alistair is a good tank, but Shale is a pretty good backup as well. Alistair and Leliandra went down vs the Dragon and Shale + my main healer mage finished off the last 50% of the dragons health.
Hard difficulty, the Dragon at the Urn quest.
Does any one else consider Alistair to be useless?

he does get injured alot. im guessing i dont have his tactics set up properly though.i use "the sten" for most of my tanking. he's not the nicest guy to chat with though. its funny how my main mage does most of the damage and gets injured the least even though he draws most of the aggro.

hes not that bad, if you train him in a way so that you could use him hes quite a well working tool, but that doenst protect the bastard from getting killed

I find he is standing up very well now that his is decked out in good armor and has the shield specs. I can send him off to tank a pair of enemies to hold the flank and not worry about him much.

because i figured they had a path for him that would exploit his talents and since I, at the time, wasn't used to sword and shield templar tanks I thought it would be better. Apparently I was not correct, so I am using a rogue(i like rogues better anyways) and am using prettyboy as a tank - lvling him myself. We shall see if my choices for him are better than autolvling. right now trying to figure out dog vs sten - sten is better fighter, but dog finds gifts and stuff - which helps with a certain dancing fool.allothernamesweretaken wrote...

btw - I do love this forum - it is truly better than some where a thread like this would get no advice and total flames from all the Alistair fan-boys/girls. At least there is some good content here... thanks. One of these days I will have learned enough to actually get past 12th level.

alistair has been a great tank for me once i decked him out enough, but i've ran into AI problems with him just standing there or waiting too long to attack things when he's set to aggressive.

Hate everything about alistar, I want a DLC that lets me murder/torture him.

Alistair is an absolute wrecking machine, man. I'm not sure what you're talking about. If you crank up his shield-fighting and Templar abilities he's absolutely lethal.
Gotta love his personality, too. Righteous and noble, but also kind and posessed of a sense of humor.

I like Alistair, he's funny. I guess if you play as a tank yourself then you might not find him useful. I play as a mage and I use Alistair instead of Sten. I don't like Sten at all...Sten has an attitude problem, lol. I just got the golem so now my party members consist of Alistair, Wynn and Shale(he has a personality problem right now but it's a golem so maybe in the long run I could change him, lol). Alistair and I are competing to see who dies more often and I blame Wynn for it, lol and hopefully I'll give him better gears soon.
The bottom line is that Alistair is cool, even if I play as a tank, I'll still keep him around just because of his funny and cool personality.

How could you guys say Sten is better than Ali or Ali better than Sten? They are both warriors and can both spec the same way...

Alister does more damage than Sten in my game and infinitely more survivable. I even gave him Starfang (1H version).

I loved Alistair in both personality and gameplay (although I didn't touch his templar line--my main was a CC mage, and he pretty effectively neutralized other magi).
I didn't use him the whole game for some spoilery reasons, but he's pretty fantastic.

Never NEVER auto level! That is the worst thing in the blasted world!
Trust me, if you stick points in his STR and CON in order to use the heavier armor and shield/sword skills Alistair makes an excellent tank.
And don't forget to get his Warrior skills like Threaten and Taunt.

Don't need a DLC for that! To torture Alistair, just bring Morrigan along as well! Mission accomplished!rukkusorg wrote...

Alistar is an awesome tank if you want him to be. Templar/Champion speclizations work out really well. When he's surrounded by two or more enemies I have him use warcry which knocks down/stuns most of the enemies. With proper tactics and leveling up through the shield line Alistar does a good job at keeping tougher foes stunned or on the ground.
With my mage being an arcane warrior and having cleansing aura he barely loses any health during most fights and in really tough fights (tactic rank boss or higher) have him activate wall shield. His health goes down really slowly. I have Morrigan throw a heal on him if his health gets to around 50% and it works out great.
I have my tactics set up in such a way that I really never have to worry about anyone, but myself.

Definitely agree with the never auto-level statements lol.
Alistar is a fantastic tank if you give him some good armor, max out the sword and board talents and set up his tactics correctly.
I havent had as much experience tanking with Shale, I intended to do that on my next play through with an evil group.

In this game, if you don't spec right, you will feel it in some form or another. Alistar is no exception. He can be an amazing tank, but if you put the points in the wrong place or picked the wrong abilities at the wrong time, he may come off as pretty s***y. That said, I switched off Alistar and Sten (always had Oghren though), and Alistar never really let me down. Morrigan did though... shape shifting blows.

Yeah, the blame is definitely on your auto-leveling. Alistair is my best melee fighter. Not to mention he's one of the most interesting characters story-wise.

Alistair is awesome. On the other hand, I never used auto-level. I never do. A blind ferret can level better than auto-leveling in ANY game. NEVER use it.
