Just downloaded the game off steam, delux edition, and when i go to start it up it seems to crash right away. The loading image (small i dunno 2 1/2" by 5" dragon age image) appears then an error msg saying "dragon age has stopped responding" appears.  Two options show up, one is to search web for solution *which does nothing* and the other is to close the program. ok heres my specs:

What ive done so far: Ive uninstalled, redownloaded and installed again to no avail. Ive messed with the config options *done everything possible* nothing worked, uninstalled physx and installed the copy that came with the download *version 9.09.0408* which didnt fix anything.

Manually downloaded versions 9.09.0408, 9.10.0513 (latest version i assume) , 9.09.0814 all to which have had no effect. reupdated my vid drivers, turned off sound in config (to check audio problems mayhap?) , ran cleaners galore on my comp.

Ive been banging my head thoughout both the steam forums and Bioware forums (hence the physx solutions) and im now getting a little desperate, brand new game kinda usless for a couple days now atm, (steam makes sure its updated to 1.04 patch just fyi) Any input on what i might be missing and/or fixes? im going on 4 hours now of troubleshooting so any other ideas would be great. Thx

(P.S - Ive also ran the "Verify Integrity of Game Cache" though steam, *basically goes and checks that all the game files are there and are not corrupted)

Just to be sure, have you updated DirectX with the installer located in Steam\\SteamApps\\common\\dragon age origins\\redist\\DirectX ?

Just to check that this issue is not related to a video codec installed on your computer, could you try to disable the intro movies and launch the game? To disable intro movies, select the game in Steam interface, click Play, select Launch Dragon Age: Origins Launcher option and click Play again. In the next window, click Configure. Then, select Video in the left hand column and check the Disable Intro Movies option. Save these settings and close the window. Close the launcher window. Then, launch the game from Steam interface.

BTW, are you using a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7?

thanks for the replays JackM, ya i tried to disable the intro movie, no luck there, im running win 7 64 bit. The only lead i have left that i can think of is from the error msg, "Fault Module Name: DAOrigins.exe", ive seen some other posts with a guy having the fault module related to his vid card, where as mine is the actual exe file. Any ideas there? Ive redownloaded the game and installed it twice with the same error (althought i am downloading the steam combo pack with awakening) maybe something is going wrong with the 2 downloading at the same time?

If you have already verify the integrity of DA:O game cache, it's unlikely.

Have you checked that .NET Framework is up to date on your computer (updates should be available thru Windows Update web site)?

You may also try to reinstall/update Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable using the installer located in Steam\\SteamApps\\common\\dragon age origins\\redist.

What is your sound card?

Also try this, goto Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Find the UAC option and turn it off, and restart the PC.

UAC makes it more difficult for managing your data under the Program Files sub folder, you have to run everything as Admin and even then that is not a guarentee. So try that first.

DA:O with Awakening from Steam with 1.4 patch is crashing at startup on my rig too.

For now the only thing that worked for me was to use the 'Disable Sound' option in DA configuration utility (I have Creative X-Fi Platinum with latest drivers, and Windows XP x86 SP3 with latest updates to .NET and everything else)

I played through DA and Awakening one time only from March to May on 1.3 version (the same drivers for X-Fi were used, Creative didn't update them for a long time) - everything worked (except for bugs that were reported in Awak. quest and reducing performance) and I don't remember DA crashing back then.

Have you checked the integrity of DA:O and Awakening game caches? (From Steam game list, right-click the game, select Properties, open Local Files tab and click Verify Integrity of Game Cache...)

Yes, I did. Everything is fine. I'm now trying to find drivers for my integrated audio (haven't used since I bought X-Fi). I'll see if DA will work with it with sound turn on.

EDIT: By "Everything" I meant that files verification completed with no errors, all files are present and are not corrupted =)

Ha. It didn't help.. I switched to integrated SoundMAX audio with latest drivers (i think I have an AD1985 chip) and disabled X-Fi in Device Manager, set 'use only default devices' in Sound and Audio Devices in Control Panel - same result - DA crashes if 'Disable Sound' is turned off.
So I guess it's not driver related then. This is getting pretty ridiculous - new patches are supposed to fix problems and not cause newer and more depressing ones.
By the way - I already tried reinstalling different versions of DirectX and PhysX from official sites and from redist dir in DA Steam folder - doesn't help either.
EDIT: And yes, integrated audio works, I checked it with Mass Effect 2.

Instead of disabling audio, have you tried to activate Force Stereo Sound in Configure > Audio? I've heard of some issues with 5.1 audio.

BTW, when DA:O crash, did you get any error message?

Yeah, forcing stereo doesn't help either.

No, no messages. Nothing. Just crashes to desktop. Here is the listing of log from "My Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\Logs"

If you uncheck Disable Sound but check Disable Sound Effects, Disable Music and Disable Dialogue Audio, can you run DA:O? If so, what happens if you re-enable these settings in-game?

Nope. Same thing happend - it crashed. Log ended in the same place as in previous post.

EDIT: I also tried it with every other setting in Configuration Utility - whether DA crashes or not only depends upon the status of 'Disable Sound' switch
EDIT: There is also only one entry in DragonAge.ini file in section [AudioOptions] that is not present in Configuration Utility: 'MusicSystemDisabled=0'. I tried changing it to 'MusicSystemDisabled=1' - didn't help - same result.

This is just great! I can't find a way to cancel the update to DA:O 1.4 in Steam - it's starts immediately after I restore my DA:O 1.3 from backup disks and there is no button, no nothing to cancel the update. And I can't play it while the update is in progress.

So now I have an unplayable game with no possibility to downgrade it to the previous (working) version and Golems DLC that I purchased and can not play even once.

I'm going to try to restore my system from backup image from the time when I played DA 1.3, at least that way I'll be sure that it's not some other software I installed since then or some windows or .NET update or whatever interfering with DA.

I'll post the results here when I'm done. Won't hold my breath though, I doubt it would help.

Total waste of time dealing with this game and its problems.

You can prevent the game auto-update by right-clicking on its name in game list and selecting Properties. Then, in Updates tab, set Automatic Updates to "Do not automatically update this game". I suggest that you first go to offline mode in Steam (Stream > Go Offline...) before restoring you game. Once it is restored, change update mode then go online.

You can't install games in offline mode, Steam would just say "Games cannot be installed when Steam is in offline mode. Exit and restart Steam, and choose 'Go Online'". Did you meant game backups as in just copying contents of steamapps folder?

If so, then its not an option since the only backup of DA:O 1.03 I have was made using Steam client "Backup and Restore Games..." feature, and as far as I know it can only be restored from within Steam client. And in that case, in offline mode you'd get the message I mentioned. And even if you have "Do not update..." in properties before installing the game from backup - Steam starts update to the latest patch automatically as soon as restoring from backup is done, without waiting for user confirmation.

Anyway, I restored my system from backup. Installed DA and Steam auto-updated it to patch 1.04. And YES, again, I verified the integrity of game files. Now, at least in most cases, it launches with the same settings it was running normally with 1.03 patch. But two times already it not just crashed to desktop, but crashed the whole system (by that I mean rebooted my comp. immediately with no error message or BSoD. Log ended on "General Initialize - Sound" in both cases). I didn't yet installed recent updates to Windows and .NET, so I'm still not sure what was causing the constant crash to desktop before. Not sure I even care if I would be able to complete Golems DLC now, I'm certainly not going to play through the whole DA again, and I don't think I would be buying anymore DLC for DA after all these problems.

I'm currently installing the DLC and see if everything works past the main menu.

Are you on Windows 7?  Just FYI-- by default, Windows 7 is set to reboot on system crash with no BSOD.  You might want to turn that off in case you get another major crash.  You might want to update .NET to version 4-- just that update alone stopped most of my crashes to desktop.

No, I'm on Windows XP x86.

Just completed Golems DLC with no problems, no more crashes encountered (The DLC itself was boring IMHO, Leliana's Song was much more interesting). I won't be playing DA for a while now, at least not until another DLC is released.

So I guess that covers it. Not sure what the problem initially was. The only thing that changed was perhaps that the latest updates for WinXP and .NET are missing now. Driver versions for video and audio were the same in both cases.

I'm not surprised that your problems are audio related. 1.04 seemed to completely hose the audio on my own DA installation, and upgrading my drivers did nothing. So the Golems DLC was boring? I've held off purchasing just because it has two things I loathe: the Deep Roads and golems ;-)

Yes, Golems is an unimpressive DLC =) You'll spend an hour running around in modified maps of Ortan thaig (I think it is, there you should have found dwarf named Ruck or smth in Origins) and a map from Awakening (I think it's from mission in the Deep Roads, but I'm not sure). A few lines of dialog, a lot of running through corridors back and forth and one big boss battle at the end. That's it. Leliana's Song at least had a nice story =)

Ugh, I'll skip it then. Ortan was my least favorite thaig-- deceptively small, and took bloody forever. Kind of sad-- I had a lot of fun with Leliana's Song. I'm thinking I'll hold off on any DLC until I summon the will to reinstall the game without the 1.04 patch.  Ah well-- I'm having a lot of fun with ME2 right now.  Crash-free, unglitchy fun.
