Well, I sorta used an exploit to help me through the battle, but since the dwarf and elf don't stay by the chantry where they'd actually be useful and instead fight with the knights, it was perfectly acceptable to use. The exploit was when the one undead gets left on the ridge, and I went down to the chantry area and set oodles of shrapnel traps outside the barricade. I think I ended up putting a minimum of 20 down. This means that when the archer comes to warn you, the first wave is already pretty much destroyed and everybody's still alive. Combined with judicious use of grenades and healing the allied nameds and the battle is perfectly winnable.

Not that difficult if you have set up a good tank. I was able to kill about 4 waves of mobs with just Alistair and no healer.
