I have read that Dragon Age Awakening retail can be played as a stand alone game and origins is not nescessarily needed to play.

My question is, If I download  Dragon Age Awakening from the Xbox marketplace, at current special price, Can I play it as a standalone game as I dont have Origins?

If you download you need to have the original DAO disc. If you buy the Awakening Disc, you just use that. So in summary, you CANNOT just download and play Awakening like an Arcade title.

You cant play Awakening without a full version of Origens. Its not a "Stand alone" game its a expansion onto the game. Its a stand alone quest in that your characters will not have any interaction with origenal origens places, plot or events.

Kind of a funny question, before getting Awakening one would assume you own/beat Origens.

Otherwise why would you even bother?

I believe it's a standalone for the consoles for retail versions, because you don't have to install games on these platforms. For the PC you need to have Origins installed.

I can't find a source to this, but i'm pretty sure someone at Bioware said this.

A quote from 1up website:

http://www.1up.com/d...age?cId=3178370

"A slight random aside: while the PC version requires Origins, the console versions can be played as stand-alone titles. Whichever version you play, be warned that most of your items from various Origins DLC won't be imported. Also, since it takes place after Origins, that means that, while you can bring in a character into Origins, you can't take that character from Awakening back into any DLC for Origins. What this means for future DLC is unknown, but as a general warning: whether you play it on console or PC, you need to make sure to finish Origins and all of its DLC to date, before tackling Awakening. *Sigh*

Just buy it and play it, if it dosnt work then you need Origens too. Its that simple.

I happen to know for a fact as I have all versions of the game that it can not be played by itself.

have you actually read what has been posted?

the retail (I.E. BOXED VERSION WITH DISK) for xbox 360 can be played as a standalone, you will just have to create a fresh character instead of importing one.

but you could always just go out and buy Origins later if you wanted anyway, Awakening doesn't really follow on from Origins so you wouldn't have plot holes as far as I know..

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and comments. I have bought Origins from Glyde and I will buy Awakening off Xbox marketplace before the 1600 ms points deal expires. Is it worth $20?

I think it's worth $20.  I finished Awakening a few days ago for the first time.  It took me 16 hours.  I'll play it at least two or three more times with other characters.  I've spent $60 for SP games which only took 8-10 hours to complete the game and didn't have nearly as much replay value.
