How many orcs can you blow up with one fireball?
Is it a good idea to insult the spectre of a centuries-dead archmage?
Do kobolds ever scratch their nether regions?
Do kobolds even *have* nether regions?

You will find answers to these compelling questions and more while playing The Wizard's Apprentice.

Recommended Starting Level: 1
Typical Ending Level: 4

The Wizard's Apprentice is a story driven module which is set In the Cloven Mountains on the continent of Faerun. It is intended for Wizards. It is possible for a Sorcerer or a Bard to finish the module, but it may be necessary to start at a level higher than first due to the difficulty of combat. Other classes are strongly discouraged as they will not be able to complete the module. If you choose to multi-class it will likely make the module more difficult, but if you take at least one level in the aforementioned spellcasting classes, it will be possible, although very difficult, to finish the module.

Any of the races will fit well with the plot. Due to the difficulty of combat, if you choose a race with a level adjustment you may not be able to complete the module.

Conversations and journal entries will guide you as you proceed through the game. While there is a central plot, There are several side quests which you can complete at your leisure. Some are more difficult than others. If you are not powerful enough to complete a particular quest, I recommend you leave it be and return when you have reached a higher level.

You must proceed with caution in The Wizard's Apprentice or you will die. A lot. Keep your defensive spells at the ready and save frequently as there is no respawning. Explore all areas thoroughly and talk to everyone to complete quests and learn more about your surroundings. There are ample items, potions, scrolls, and other things to assist you. They are there for a reason, to keep you alive.

This module is the first in a series. Questions are raised which will not be answered in this module. You will receive items which do not appear to be immediately useful.

In this module, you go toe to toe with the denizens of the Cairn mountains *without* a figher to be a meat shield. You must learn use your magic and tactics skillfully or die.

The module is hard, but possible. Test your wizarding skills in The Wizard's Apprentice. I have tried to add some light humor to offset the gravity of the combat. Observant and thoughtful adventurers will be rewarded with secret treasure.

Enjoy!

M. Rieder: One thing I should have mentioned. To get the module to run, I had to move the giant_ant.hak file from The Wizard's Apprentice’s campaign folder to the hak folder.

Yeah had to do this too

Played for an hour over weekend fro a break, and it's a fun little mod so far. A ranged weapon at the start may have been nice. Had some bugs with the journal updates firing in wrong order (and mention of orcs invading the new masters hours at night not making any sense - guessing something didn't fire..) but the puzzles are fun (was hoping a reduce person would get me through the small cave entrance tho)

***********SPOILER ALERT******************

Hmmm....

Did the mention of orcs invading come after the dark masked figure came into the tower and woke you up?

I just found out about the .hak and I am working on fixing it.

Thanks for the info.

Im a little lost... I have the hak file where it goes, but other than the module there was just a couple files (3) that looked like campaign stuff so I put them there. But there was no folder. So in the start up I can only choose to start your game as a module. So the folder is missing I guess?

Oh wait nevermind I guess I jumped the gun. The only problem was the ant hak and I already moved it. I'll try this out now.

*****Spoiler Alert**********

Here is what I think happened.

You completed the quests in the basement, then found the bizarre creature to complete the new specimens quest, then you finished exploring the tunnels beneath the tower to complete the "hole in the wall" quest.  Afterwards, you master asked you to find ariskan and you received the "A word with Ariskan" quest.

When you left the tower and went to the town of riverbend, you spoke with Ariskan (your new master) and then were jumped back to the tower.

At this point, I am guessing that instead of talking to your old master (Azurius) you spoke with your new master instead, which prompted the conversation about orcs attacking.

I should have made it where right when you go and get Ariskan (new master) it automatically starts the conversation with the old master.  This will prevent the game-breaking bug.

Thanks for finding it.  I never would have found it on my own.

Unfortunately, there is no fix to get the game back on track without going to a previous saved game.  Go back to a game which you saved before you left the tower or spoke with Ariskan (new master).  This time, when you get Ariskan (the new master) and get jumped back to the tower, go talk to your old master (Azurius) and you will be back on track.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Let me know if I am off on my theory about what went wrong.

Matt.

If you still can't get it going, go back to the NWVault page, I altered the install instructions when I found out about the .hak file problems.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

Im doing pretty good at toasting orcs as a solo level 3. Either mirror imaging myself and standing in the middle of them for a fireburst or hoping a lucky sleep spell hits all 5.

This house is really rad is it part of the base toolset I couldnt remember, if it is there is only one like it which is sad

It is part of the original toolset.  It is the sunken flagon from neverwinter, the place that Daeghun's brother runs.  I may have changed the tint, but I can't remember for sure.

Yes, you're breakdown of events sounds about right.

Not sure I have a valid save, but once I'm finished building myself, I'll come back to try this again for sure

Looking forward to trying it. I love wizards and appreciate anyone who can make them more than just "Artillery" support. I plan on playing this weekend. When is the next one in the series coming out?

Downloaded this last night, but didnt get the chance to play - can't wait to get home from work. Between this and the Maimed God's Saga I'm quickly becoming a fan of the class-specific adventure. Seriously has me considering the direction I want to take future modules if and when I design them (need to finish the one I'm working on first - that's right, Tony, stick to a project until it is finished, and THEN get lost in the next idea...)

I have always enjoyed wizarding because of the versatility that magic gives the character, thus my reason for having a wizard-focused module.

The next chapter is in the conceptual development phase.  I was on google earth this evening looking at parts of alaska and chile to use for maps and to gain inspiration on how to set up the local area for this next chapter.  I have the story line basically laid out and I am turning the specifics over my head.

The first one took me 6 months.  Some of that time was spent learning the toolset and learning how to script.  Hopefully I can get the next one out sooner, but it may take as long since I have more ambitious hopes for chapter 2.

Thanks for the interest and I hope you enjoy the module.

Matt

I was initially uncertain if making  class-specific module would be a bad idea since it limits the audience to people who are willing to play a wizard/socerer/Bard.  I was convinced after playing Last of the Danaan which is geared heavily for a ranger.  I loved it!  A class-specific module can focus on the strengths of a class and therefore encourages some of the more specific development of the character.

Hope you like it.

Don't know about 'officially', but I played it with Kaedrin's installed (forgot to get rid of it) and experienced no problems, though I didn't use any of the classes obviously (too low level, plus playing a single class wiz anyway).

Was a really good mod, btw. Can't wait for part 2 :0)

I did not set it up to work with Kaedrin's.  This is my first module and I am still new to modding so I don't actually know how to make sure Kaedrin's works with it.  If there is a tutorial I would certainly look into it.
