They could've. No one's stopping them when Bioware was writing down ideas. But, they didn't. I was also disappointed Bioware based their elves and dwarves on expectations. The qunari happens to be the only race that isn't pidgeon-holed into a real-world culture despite calling them Thedas's Ottomans. Bioware treated them with as an actual "other," a total class of their own without depending on subversions of stereotypes. But, I'm not crying over their decisions. They can be as generic as they want. Bioware's masters of their own campaign.

I don't really see the Elves and Dwarves filling the usual stereotypes in the Dragon Age setting.  Rather than tall, beautiful, perfect Elves we have city Elves, a poor people who live as second-class citizens to the superior Humans.  We have the Dalish, but they're much fewer than common Elves and just about everyone hates them.  With Dwarves, we finally lost the annoying Scottish accents.  Most of them aren't total drunks like Oghren, either.  That was nice to see.

They do fill some of the expected stereotypes, but most of them are more superficial.  Yes, Elves have pointy ears.  Yes, Dwarves live underground.  But beyond that, I think that both races are much different from what we see in Tolkien, D&D, etc.

What Mass Effect did to the sci-fi games, Dragon Age does to fantasy. They don't ignore the archetypes at all. They expand on them, change them, spin them on their heads, play them straight, and they're still there.

Dragon Age is a Medieval Europe Fantasy. They happen. A lot. I'm sorry that some don't like that they did this, but that's the way the game was made. Play a different game if you don't like the setting. Regardless, the reason we don't see any black people is pretty obvious: they don't exist in Thedas (that we've seen). They're probably at wherever the humans originally came from. It's not breaking a barrier to include them. Unless more people arrive from the humans original continent, it doesn't make sense.

Yes Dragon Age 2 should have a more diverse cast. The Free Marches is supposed to be some what like America (a melting pot) so we should see a wide range of humans, as well as elves and dwarves etc.

There are indeed black people in Thedas-- the Rivaini have skin tones ranging from dark tan to ebony. You'll find them scattered in various places. As to whether or not we would ever have a party member who was Rivaini, we'll see. I don't think we would include it just for the sake of including it. As a character concept, representation of a real-world ethnic group is pretty weak if that's all it is.

Insofar as someone not liking the fact that Thedas is (very loosely) based on medieval Europe-- well that's nice, but we like it just fine.

David, I agree that having a Rivaini companion just for the sake of having one isn't fair to anyone; you know the lore better than most of us and would likely know the best way to work them into the game so that they fit the story that is being told.

Ha ha ha! Confirmation! I tried hunting around to see if there was any Word of God on exactly what the Rivaini are supposed to look like, and all I could find was "ehh, dark skinned".
Confirmation until Mike shows up and tells us that they habitually dye their skin (or do they?!), that is.

Also agree I would not want a black party member just thrown into the game simply just because. With that said, If we do have a black companion, I hope he/she is more like Joliee Bindo and not Jacob (The Priiiize) Taylor. I would even like to see a female love interest that is black, as long as she's a well written character.

But are they actually "black people" or are they black-skinned people? Once again I'm not sure which of the two you guys are asking to have added to the game and they aren't really the same thing.

That's what I mean by subversions of stereotypes. They're not random changes though, but work well within dark fantasy image of the series. That doesn't mean much to me though. Being different doesn't make them interesting, but rather their role in the greater vision for Thedas. Even then, I still don't find elves and dwarves appealing (unless someone asks me if elves have the clap). They're still human in a sense, not a quirk taken to the extreme.

So Gaider, according to this, when we're engaging in... "relations"... with Isabella at the Pearl, or doing a threesome/foursome, we're getting it on with a black woman?

And here I thought that was a requirement for any sort of companion or LI.

That's like saying that anyone from Africa must be black, or anyone from Japan must be Asian.

Haven't tried him. I've yet to play a female Shepard in ME2.

I understand what BioWare was going for--a party member that didn't seem on the verge of collapse due to every single one of them being in a personal crisis. A sane, nice, reasonable guy. But he never says anything interesting, he never has a personality besides "I'm a nice, civil person with abs." Thane didn't need his dead wife/estranged son combo to make him interesting. Likewise, it would have been possible to make an interesting person without issues that wasn't so bland. Also, his complete and utter unreaction to finding out his father's whereabouts was sort of off-kilter.

But you've seen The Priiiize, right?

Hmm, adding an ethnic character to a game just because it's politically correct?

Heavy risk . . . . but the priiiizzzzeeee . . . .

Fantasy world of DAO does not equal real world. The whole point of a fantasy game world is to have completely foreign cultures from what we are used to. that is why we have the elves, quarnari, and so on. There are darker skinned people like other have described in this thread, that are similar to African Americans already in the present game world.

I didn't mean that at all, and I apologize for the misunderstanding. What I meant was that Isabella has a really dark skintone, and she mentions being from the Rivain. Now if she was from somewhere else and raised there only, then I'll wait for confirmation, since there isn't official word on whether Isabella is Native Rivaini or not.

If I severely misunderstood what Gaider said, then more apologies. Maybe I should just stop posting here since I keep saying the wrong things anyway and misconstruing my meaning... <_<

I meant more as a requirement for the player (i.e. I won't interact with a companion or pursue a romance if it's not for my tastes, in this case those being a well written character).

EDIT

And, like I said, I haven't yet interacted with Taylor as a female Shepard; I'll reserve judgement until I do.
