What i personally got from his post was that there were "black people" in Thedas, and they weren't there "just to be there", as some other people have put it. They are there for a reason, like the elves, the qunari, etc.

I doubt he can expand on the topic much further without the possibility of spoiling future content or saying something mean (which i don't ever think is their intention).

He never said there *weren't* going to be any in future projects. Although skimming through the thread, I don't think anyone actually said they don't like the fact that it was loosely based off of medieval Europe - just some people weren't aware that it was, and some people (like me) saying that regardless if it is, that doesn't mean Thedas shouldn't enjoy more diversity. As someone else pointed out, females could not be fighters, or have political say (unless, you know, they were queen or something), yet in Fereldan they can do both. So the presences of black people aren't that crazy at all. I'm pretty sure that's why Mr. Gaider, and several other people have used "loosely based" as key termonolgy.

I think you might have misinterpret it as Mr. Gaider saying that the team was fine with less diversity in the game, and I simply don't think that is the case. I don't remember exactly when, but some time ago a post was made by a player saying something about playing a human noble and making a black character, but it was odd that his family was white. A lot of the forum posters thought his concerns were silly, and it was Mr. Gaider who responded saying that he had a valid point, but either they didn't have the time or reasources to budget that kind of option - to adjust your family to match your ethinicity. Honestly though, that's just my take on his post, I'm sure Mr. Gaider will explain it better himself.

I think a lot of people are upset because a few people have been making it out that black people don't belong in Thedas or in the Dragon Age Universe at all, or if they were put in there, it would be only because it was politically correct. That's not the case at all, from Mr. Gaider's post - they are already there, and with a good reason/back story (unless I'm the one that misinterpretted it). I'd like to see more of them and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Completely unrelated I'd also like to see Amazons, or some kind of matriachal society (maybe Drows, only minus the elf part of them) with a spin to them. Just because I've been reading the qunari threads and I'd love to see a clash of cultures between the Qunari and a society that has nothing but female fighters and politicians/nobles that view men as nothing but sperm donors.  What a dumb thread! You do realize you can make your character any color you want.Image IPB

Don't really see what's dumb about it.  I probably wouldn't have called it breaking a barrier, I'd probably say include more variety in the towns especially one that is  a major population center.

I'm not interested in what I do with my character, your right, my character can be pretty much whatever I want to do with it, though with DA having a sister, hopefully whatever I do with my character will be reflected in her.  Dumb is having a character who has dark or tan skin tone and a sister who was adopted. Or maybe it was my character who was adopted.

I'm interested in a world that is filled with a variety of skin tones and  accents.  It's a world, it should have a variety of people in it.  Sure, it's medieval, but there are boats and explorers and traders, armies who should be out wandering around, like the Qunari.

I don't expect to see a whole neighborhood, but in the town a couple of dark skin traders with exotic goods from the far north or south or some mercenaries from far away hanging in the bar, or a retired explorer who met his/her spouse and stayed to raise a family and now sells and repairs weapons.   This I would like to see.

Do you honestly think a dev would reply on the official forums of his company if with 'we' if it only meant 'they'?

A lot of people use 'we' to give emphasis.

I suspect David can give his own reply without you doing it for him.

cheers

edit - Thief-of-Hearts, thank you for the considered reply. Appreciate you taking the time to do so.

I notice that the ongoing cliche in fantasy titles revolving around medieval times is to basically create enviorments with absolutely no African Americans.I think it would be both refreshing and ground breaking if Bioware  could figure out a way to incorporate a african American in a game like Dragon Age 2.

If there were black people in Dragon Age, how would they be African-American? People need to stop using the term African-American to describe all black people. If you're a black person from Ireland, you're not African-American. If you're a black person from Thedas, you're not African-American. You're only an African-American if you're black and from the Americas.
And what would be "ground breaking" about putting a black guy in a game like Dragon Age? Would it be as ground breaking as the black guy in Final Fantasy XIII?

I'm not going to filter through the 20+ pages or whatever this has generated, sorry.

So I'll just ask, you do realize that not every black person on the planet is considered African American don't you?

As for what you seem to want, I think DG gave a pretty good explanation on it.

I've never seen a case of a dev using "we" and not meaning the whole development team. They use "I" if it's something personal. Also, he's the lead writer, so I'm pretty positive you can be sure he knows what he's talking about.

Bryy_Miller, are you perhaps the type of person that always have to have the last word, and do you always have to be right?

It's a rather annoying attribute, though I would be really rather surprised if you sustained from replying...

(Apologies to everyone else reading this thread, as I have not added to the discussion)

So you would prefer for you to always have the last word when you're being aggressive?

hmm... what about Asians? Indians, Mongolians and Chinese have already known the western world and came into conflict and trade before the dark ages, should they be present in Thedas as well?

I think this has been asked (and I answered) several times, but...

Liselle and Anora's maid both have Asian features--they're also both from Orlais. You do have the ability to make an Asian character in Character Creation as well.

There are indeed black people in Thedas-- the Rivaini have skin tones ranging from dark tan to ebony. You'll find them scattered in various places. As to whether or not we would ever have a party member who was Rivaini, we'll see. I don't think we would include it just for the sake of including it. As a character concept, representation of a real-world ethnic group is pretty weak if that's all it is.

See people, I ****ing told you, now chillax.

And David is right, I don't wanna see another badly done character like Jacob who felt forced.

The ME setting was already multicolored and multicultural before Jacob came along (some of the most important humans you meet are people of color), so I don't see an argument to be made that he was "forced," whatever one might think of him as a character.

I don't think he felt forced at all. His character was bland but it had nothing to do with his appearance or his race. Many of the characters in the ME games look non-white or even mixed-race. I personally think Kaiden looks like he's mixed (Asian+caucasian). I have no idea if this was the intent and nothing is said about it verbally ingame but I always thought so anyway.

I thought Ashley was Hispanic and Kaidan was Japanese (considering his name and appearance). Captain Anderson is black, you can make Shepard any ethnicity you please...

Honestly, I'm amazed someone would call Jacob's being black "forced". He was boring, but like Anarya said, it has nothing to do with his race.

So you won't make black characters because its supposed to be loosely based around Medieval Europe (with a random Africa country thrown in the mix?) but you'll let us make black characters using white features.

Well at least Bethesda does it right.
