What a BS. You place some black people in the game and everyone say "racists!", you don't put them and everyone goes "racists!". And if at least one die then who ever did this game is soooo screwed.

The only way anyone can make this work, is making a game where black people are Gods and all white ones kiss their feet.

And why Afro-Ammerican? Are you racist and don't want afro-european or afro-russian or native african be in the game too? And I dont even talk about Asians who are majority of the Earth population.

Just f.off with this BS and crawl back to your hole. Try to keep games clean of all this crap.

Alright, no offense, but you are going way overboard. Yes, the OP ignorantly said "African-American", but guess what? It's not a bad thing to want to be represented.

I'm no so sure he's going overboard, but he could have said it differently definately.  However, he does have a point in that your damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I still think this whole discussion is silly and a waste of time considering it's a game, but people seem to feel strongly about it for some reason.

Edit to my previous post:
Would like to appologise for going so offencive. It just such thing ****** me off to extreem level. It's just every race (in real life) have majority of nice people, and then someone jumps out and talks about discrimination of any sort.
It's just wrong to bring it.... it's wrong!

When I was studing in University, feminist party went to court that our University was descriminating girls (ratio boys to girls was close to 1:0, because it was puerly technichal University) Then University lowered the passing grades for girls and ratio didn't changed (because girls simply dont want to study these subjects) but in return other people went to court for discrimination of man (girls got lower passing grade).

There is no end to it once it starts.

You can't place one girl and one boy of every race and colour to every place. If something is lacking something then it's just the way it is. You don't need to be represented in every place and thing. I'm Russian and I feel offended that Russians are seen as drunks and everyone kills us in every game. But none of us goes crying about it instead we try to change these stereotypes by showing us different and not crying about it.

Why can't people let it be and enjoy the world without as it is.

I'm lol'ing at the irony of this statement. Saying that Jacob was a "stereotype" is just reversing the racist card back on you.

... which forcees me to repeat my previous post that wanted no humans at all. We don´t need represent real-life races in a fantasy game. Better make different kinds of elves, dwarfes, trollls, goblins, aliens and whatever playable.

I didn't think he was a stereotype at all. But Miranda and Jacob were obviously Ms Fanservice and Estrogen Brigade Bait respectively... Sexytimes is enough proof, mmm mmm.

DA games should definitely bring in more important characters that aren't Caucasian...

And David is right, I don't wanna see another badly done character like Jacob who felt forced.

The ME setting was already multicolored and multicultural before Jacob came along (some of the most important humans you meet are people of color), so I don't see an argument to be made that he was "forced."

I don't think he felt forced at all. His character was bland but it had nothing to do with his appearance or his race. Many of the characters in the ME games look non-white or even mixed-race. I personally think Kaiden looks like he's mixed (Asian+caucasian). I have no idea if this was the intent and nothing is said about it verbally ingame but I always thought so anyway.

See I kinda thought Kaiden looked Hispanic or Mexican Image IPB I'm not really seeing the Asian...

He looks of mixed descent, but clearly Asian.

Image IPB

Also, his name is Japanese, but in Western format.

He looks Eastern European.  Alenko sounds a lot like Stepanenko, litvinenko, Both slavic names.  "-Enko" suffix is very common in Ukrainian names in particular.

I thought he was slavic too. I don't see the japanese thing AT ALL Image IPB and I always thought the lastname was slavic.
And wasn't Ashley hispanic?

African Americans, no.

Black people, yes.

Duncan is from a place that I forget the name of, isn't everyone there supposed to have dark skin?

It's also worth nothing that if Ferelden is indeed based on the British isles, that Britain actually had black people as early as the 13th century (mind you, not very many). These people likely came on boats with Mediterranean merchants as sailors or some such so it wouldn't really be that odd to have a couple of black people in Ferelden and Orlais.

Actually they were in England well before that with the Romans bringing them here.

I must agree its is annoying that the OP insists on African Americans. LIke Africans and European/Africans etc do not exist.

Typical narrow minded American we always get posting here, (who always reflect so badly on their own country) we only count the USA when we open our mouths thinking.

I assume that the silent majority in the USA has more sense than this, but its this kind of comment that makes so many countries think the Americans are so awful, its almost a George bush Junior kind of comment almost..

He looked like a southern slav to me (I've seen croats, serbs and bosniaks who look like him), but he could be eurasian as well- Alenko is a slavic name for sure though. And Ashley does look like a mestizo (not "hispanic", which is just a term for anyone who's from a spanish speaking country- regardless of race).

So where are the Asians ?

They don't seem to have a country of their own, but Liselle and Anora's maid were both Asian, and Orlesian.

Here I am ;) I am Asian!

Ok, back on topic (kinda):

My guess is that the Asian race of Thedas are the migrant kinds, as Liselle left Orlais and came to Ferelden as a form of refuge... and sells oils/flowers in Denerim.

Erlina is also from Orlais. She's Anora's handmaiden. Who's implied to have trained in bardic arts, hmm...

Just theoretically, I will assume the Thedas equivalent of China is just as overpopulated and troubled (does that mean we get to see Indians too?) and many have migrated all over Thedas searching for refuge... I am guessing that place has one too many civil wars and also their own Alienage which explains Erlina's Asian features....

I think it would be nice for DA to explore other places in the future, Orlais, Antiva... And hopefully the Qunari homeland, Thedas equivalent of Asia (India/China) and Africa! :o :hopeful look:

Supplements: Liselle and Erlina

they talk about discrimination because it's real and it still happens.

i'm not for affirmative action myself, but just because you personally have had a bad experience with people wanting more dviersity doesn't mean that everyone who wants more is necessarily a jerk trying to play the race card.

i'm pretty sure no one in this thread called Bioware racist. I may have missed it, though, so point it out to me if they did.

all the OP asked for was more black people in game, what exactly is wrong with that?

Chasind are just Wilder folk, their skin color has nothing to do with it. Kind of like how someone pointed out earlier there were a few mages and drawves that looked black - that a few individuals of a group looked black.

I don't understand what people are asking for when they ask for "African American" characters in DA. "African American" is more of a cultural identity than a skintone. Do you want to see more NPCs with dark skin? Are you asking for Sub-Saharan African facial features? People that speak with an African or African American accent? In-game countries based on African or African-American cultures?

I just think that the OP was a tad inarticulate in expressing what he /she wants from the game, and African-American was the only way they could say it.  I understood what they meant.  No use arguing semantics.

Being a dark skinned American myself (I had my view on that changed by an African exchange student who informed me that if I ever went to Africa, they wouldn't call me an African-American.  They'd call me an American, and half of them would try to rob me lol), I understand why there aren't many, if any, dark skinned humans in Dragon Age.  Dragon Age is the story about Thedas, which is based on the British Isles in the Dark Ages.

I remember playing Jade Empire, which I didn't like, and not caring that there were no dark skinned characters.  So, why is it necessary here?  It's stuff like this that wears people out about the subject of race.

Dragon Age already has races (elves, dwarves, etc) and the subject is tackled through that allegory. Race is a personal, heated subjected (as shown by this forum) and player decisions in Orzamar or the Dalish camp allow for a subconscious reaction to racial discrimination without offending any "real" racial groups.

Of course, the original question is just having  "a" black character...well, that can be...YOU!  I'm part Asian, and my DA character is reflective of that...so I'm pretty much the evil ambassador of "Asia" in the game world. "Message from Asia...time to die, filthy scum!"

[edited for possible spoilers]

He's like Balkin/Slavic, and I think he looks a little Middle Eastern.

So he's probably Balkin they have some Islamic/Middle Eastern roots.

But I know he's not Asian, except the eyes look kinda South Eastern Asian.

And Ashley is Hispanic, her writer confermed it a while ago.
