Nor do I want a grizzled black "sarge" type character. I'd rather not have a character that has been done to death before.
As much as I hated Halo, I'd be fine with their Sarge.

What about my Idea of funny African-American character?
too clichey, I got sick of that stereotype with Steve Urkel, Bill Cosby and Will Smith cannibalizing TV with their sitcoms in the 90's

It's funny how in a game with dwarves, elves, qunari and humans, people shout for race equality in the matter of color (which Bioware has showed, albeit a rather lame character, Mass Effect 2 had Jacob.)
There were a few black NPCs here and there. And I wouldn't mind a Samuel L Jackson type (bad mofo) as a companion. But wouldn't care too much if it wasn't implemented.

Jacob wasnt lame. he was the most loyal and a good friend to Shepard, he saved the Council single handidly, he survived Eden Prime, and even though he is a member of Cerberus he is A morally good character and cares about people. honestly if more people gave him a chance they would like him a whole lot more.

balnd boring, and terrible dialouge, hell you know what would be a good moral choice, it would be like virimre, just with kaiden and jacob, who do I hate more... Luckily I could kill kaiden, jacob I saved because if virmire happens again im not sacraficing a person I like, hes just a net to me, a bland boring safety net.

I have and he's boring. I wanted to like him, he's a love interest. His past might be interesting, but he the character is not. Alistair is a nice, sane person and interesting. Thane doesn't need his loyalty mission problems to make him interesting either. They could have made Jacob more interesting, but they didn't. At least given him a sense of humor, or something.

Based on what I've learned in biology, black people dark skin is contributed to their melanin adapting to the extremely hot weather in Africa so the UV rays don't harm their skin, it isn't dark because the UV turned it dark, otherwise everyone could get a tan like that.
Not all of Europe is Caucasian race..zorx_again wrote...
to me it also looks like a Caucasian race (and that's all of Europe + Middle East).

I dunno, all the other characters had a personality and had human reactions, Jacob just had no personality, very, very bland character. It was like a bad remake of Kaidan, but instead of being this awesome biotic at the edge of insanity due to his L2 implants, he just had daddy issues.

Really? The impression of him I got was that he was that he had a Lobotomy or was on Ritalin or something. Way to docile and seemed to be without personality. He realizes his father has raped the women on his ship and let the men become not much more than animals and his reaction was "you're a bad man.... Shame" very calmly.

And David is right, I don't wanna see another badly done character like Jacob who felt forced.
The ME setting was already multicolored and multicultural before Jacob came along (some of the most important humans you meet are people of color), so I don't see an argument to be made that he was "forced."
I don't think he felt forced at all. His character was bland but it had nothing to do with his appearance or his race. Many of the characters in the ME games look non-white or even mixed-race. I personally think Kaiden looks like he's mixed (Asian+caucasian). I have no idea if this was the intent and nothing is said about it verbally ingame but I always thought so anyway.

I notice that the ongoing cliche in fantasy titles revolving around medieval times is to basically create enviorments with absolutely no African Americans.I think it would be both refreshing and ground breaking if Bioware could figure out a way to incorporate a african American in a game like Dragon Age 2.

This game isn't set up in historical Medieval Europe. lmao Excuses, excuses.
I'm honestly fine with the lack of black characters. It's not unusual. I just find it amusing that people would try to justify that lack with the idea that Bioware was going for total historical accuracy.
"While there were dragons and magic in Medieval Europe, there was definitely no black people."
It really is funny when you sit there and think about it for too long.
But hey, at least we could make the warden just about whatever race we wanted.
Unfortunately, for the next DA game, you can't make your own character...
