Nor do I want a grizzled black "sarge" type character. I'd rather not have a character that has been done to death before.

As much as I hated Halo, I'd be fine with their Sarge.

What about my Idea of funny African-American character?

too clichey, I got sick of that stereotype with Steve Urkel, Bill Cosby and Will Smith cannibalizing TV with their sitcoms in the 90's

But I had not the luck to see them.:(
We can use something like a Story Teller: Morgan Freeman
or someone funny as an important character in game: like Samuel L. Jackson or Chriss Rock :o

It's funny how in a game with dwarves, elves, qunari and humans, people shout for race equality in the matter of color (which Bioware has showed, albeit a rather lame character, Mass Effect 2 had Jacob.)

There were a few black NPCs here and there. And I wouldn't mind a Samuel L Jackson type (bad mofo) as a companion. But wouldn't care too much if it wasn't implemented.

Jacob wasnt lame. he was the most loyal and a good friend to Shepard, he saved the Council single handidly, he survived Eden Prime,  and even though he is a member of Cerberus he is A morally good character and cares about people. honestly if more people gave him a chance they would like him a whole lot more.

Giving jacob a chance... Heavy risk...

balnd boring, and terrible dialouge, hell you know what would be a good moral choice, it would be like virimre, just with kaiden and jacob, who do I hate more... Luckily I could kill kaiden, jacob I saved because if virmire happens again im not sacraficing a person I like, hes just a net to me, a bland boring safety net.

I have and he's boring. I wanted to like him, he's a love interest. His past might be interesting, but he the character is not. Alistair is a nice, sane person and interesting. Thane doesn't need his loyalty mission problems to make him interesting either. They could have made Jacob more interesting, but they didn't. At least given him a sense of humor, or something.

Same here. I just wasn't very interested in him as a character. I didn't dislike him he just didn't capture my interest. It had nothing whatsoever to do with his race, however. Jolee Bindo was one of my favorite KotOR companions.

And I really don't see what's so supposedly stereotypical of Jacob. I mean, he's a nice guy, handsome, well-adjusted, maybe a little bland...these do not seem to be qualities particular to any one race.

If female Shepard didn't sound like a complete skank whenever you started a convo with Jacob I would've liked him a lot more, now I just ignore him completely because I have no intrest in him as LI (well I do speak to him to get his loyalty mission, but that's pretty much it).

I don't mind if humans of another colour join the adventure, be it black, pink, yellow or whatever... But if said characters are thrown in just to be political correct, hell no.

And why is this topic still going on?

You and me both; I wasn't a huge fan at first, but he grew on me a lot. He's my favourite LI for a Renegade FemShep, too.

Based on what I've learned in biology, black people dark skin is contributed to their melanin adapting to the extremely hot weather in Africa so the UV rays don't harm their skin, it isn't dark because the UV turned it dark, otherwise everyone could get a tan like that.

I learned this in Sociology! You are correct, sir.

to me it also looks like a Caucasian race (and that's all of Europe + Middle East).

Not all of Europe is Caucasian race..

Anyway, I don't see the big deal... it's a fantasy RPG. You're not playing your role, you're playing a role of whatever BioWare gives you.

Really? The impression of him I got was that he was that he had a Lobotomy or was on Ritalin or something. Way to docile and seemed to be without personality. He realizes his father has raped the women on his ship and let the men become not much more than animals and his reaction was "you're a bad man.... Shame" very calmly.

I dunno, all the other characters had a personality and had human reactions, Jacob just had no personality, very, very bland character. It was like a bad remake of Kaidan, but instead of being this awesome biotic at the edge of insanity due to his L2 implants, he just had daddy issues.

When your born in America theres nothing african about you. Same with any race that makes you american. I am black and italian and I dont go around saying call me African/Italian american. Only ignorant people use that African american. Trust me if you went to Africa you would run back to America as fast as you can. I have been there for military stuff. You want to see what Africa is like watch Tears of the sun. To go back on topic you can make your character any color you want so who cares of the screenshots are mainly white or tanned people.

Hmm...you know, Kaidan's L2 implant thing never came out. Dr. Chakwas mentioned that he had migraines, and if you're not romancing he at one point is stand-offish, but he certainly didn't do anything like behave on the verge of insanity. That being said, while I didn't find Kaidan particularly thrilling, he had good moments, and I didn't exactly mind him. Jacob was boring as hell, and I hated the way FemShep was around him.

And David is right, I don't wanna see another badly done character like Jacob who felt forced.

The ME setting was already multicolored and multicultural before Jacob came along (some of the most important humans you meet are people of color), so I don't see an argument to be made that he was "forced."

I don't think he felt forced at all. His character was bland but it had nothing to do with his appearance or his race. Many of the characters in the ME games look non-white or even mixed-race. I personally think Kaiden looks like he's mixed (Asian+caucasian). I have no idea if this was the intent and nothing is said about it verbally ingame but I always thought so anyway.

I agree.  I like Jacob as part of my crew and do not see anything forced about his being there.  Zaeed on the other hand does seem forced, I have come to like him, but he is far more forced than Jacob.   To me Kaidan always looked a little Spanish.  Might just be my daydream though.  :)

I notice that the ongoing cliche in fantasy titles revolving around medieval times is to basically create enviorments with absolutely no African Americans.I think it would be both refreshing and ground breaking if Bioware  could figure out a way to incorporate a african American in a game like Dragon Age 2.

there is no africa, or america in DA

I am all for equality, but only aslong it makes sense, if a game is set in ancient greece I wouldn't want chinese or africans in it neither, because "political correctness" would in that case make me facepalm

one or two black people would be fine as travelers from a distant realm, as it seems Thedas is equal with the continent of europe mostly, if Bioware decides to introcuce ingame a place where other cultures live and the game takes place near those then fine, sure, let them be there as an option, Bioware could even take the chance and design their own cultures and subraces instead of just using RL ones, would like to see people with greyish skin, asian/indian-like faces, and white hair myself too as example

This game isn't set up in historical Medieval Europe. lmao Excuses, excuses.

I'm honestly fine with the lack of black characters. It's not unusual. I just find it amusing that people would try to justify that lack with the idea that Bioware was going for total historical accuracy.

"While there were dragons and magic in Medieval Europe, there was definitely no black people."

It really is funny when you sit there and think about it for too long.
But hey, at least we could make the warden just about whatever race we wanted.

Unfortunately, for the next DA game, you can't make your own character...

Well considering that Black folk were introduced all over Europe by the Roman Empire I think you need to rethink about how they vanished in medieval times as you stated above!

The fact is they have been in Europe for a couple of thousand years at least well before the dark ages. As have Asians of various groups. A recent  dig found the remains of 4 gladiators in the UK and one was from Africa for example and he was by no means alone. Another was from spain and another was from greece  ( apparently the teeth tell the diet as a child for local regions in an area and  dna tells the race.
