They're trying to sell to a certain demographic here people. Last time I checked, none of my black friends were into dragon age or any rpgs of that sort. That said, you can make a black character in dragon age and mass effect so whats the big deal.

I don't care if they put a black person in DA2 but it has to make sense in terms of the world. Rivaini are dark-skinned, and so are Qunari but in a different way.

Qunari are bronze-skinned. ike the statue of liberty. The y are bluish, while Rivaini's are darker than Duncan (He is supposed to be half Rivaini)

Soooo you're saying the Qunari have become verdigris-ed?

Greenish-grey?
If so, then yeah, they look kind of like that with a more "night elf blue" color in them. I was just trying to identify that their skin is bronzed, and it is obviously not orangish, so I compared it to the statue of liberty which is greenish blue

"Verdigris is the common name for a green pigment obtained through the application of acetic acid to copper plates[1] or the natural patina formed when copper, brass or bronze is weathered and exposed to air or seawater over a period of time." ~from Wikipedia

Why the Statue of Liberty is that color.

Visual and cultural diversity is more interesting than visual and cultural homogeneity.

On a personal note, I practically glow in the dark but the environment I grew up in was very diverse. I like seeing diversity represented because it looks and feels true to me.

Well the title of the thread as others have noted is still wrong. Dark skinned should replace African American in that regard.

The topic itself is kind of pointless. What barriers? What the hell? There's likely going to be dark skinned characters popping up at some point. Like the devs say, the first game was set in an area like medieval Europe, the next one isn't as much. And as yet more people have stated, your character could have been dark skinned in Origins anyway!

FAIL

As far as I am aware, this is Thedas, not Europe. Unless we are going further north, towards the equator, it's not going to make much sense for there to be a lot of dark-skinned people in the game. I'm not sure why threads like this get started all the time or the ones where women need to be represented more in marketting or there should be more single-sex romance options. It's a video game, not real life, that doesn't mean it is is trying to suppress real life issues.

There are black people in Rivain people, and you can make black people even though it makes no sense. Bioware has always gave you the choice to make a black character since KOTOR, except for JE which were all asians anyways, so chill out everyone.

if it makes sense i'm all for it. origins had someone from orlais, someone from antiva, and a qunari. it would make sense to have a full blooded rivaini in da2. i would not be surprised if an npc or two is black. doing it just for the sake of fitting a quota is kinda insulting to black people, in my opinion.

If Bioware need to stick black people in a game to get black people to buy it, then we haven't came very far.

Having a darker skin tone does not make them black

i agree, and if anything, the Free Marches seem like the best place to include black people.

Oblivion had blacks.Seemed pretty natural to me. In fact, Cloud Ruler Temple was Japanese. So I don't see why blacks or other races cant exist in DA universe.

Because Oblivion had an entire area dedicated to the culture. Dragon Age does not.

If someone wants to make a game based on older African history centered around African mythology, and it's good, I'll buy it.

I think everyone in this thread that thinks race is an issue in Dragon Age should play a few rounds of Left 4 Dead 2.

Except that the Free Marches is explicitly described as a place where you run into people from everywhere.  So I would be surprised and disappointed if we didn't see the diversity that is described when talking about the place actually represented when we visit it.

The problem is, there's no known area in all of Thedas consisting of black people. Even if you met everybody from everywhere, you wouldn't encounter somebody that doesn't exist.

Except for Rivain. Which has dark-skinned people and is in Thedas.
