i don't see why people say "topics like these are useless".
people ask for a certain some, like racial/gender/sexual(ity) diversity because they obviously want something that is more like them or caters more to their tastes, because more often than not those wants are under represented. and yes, they do have validity in their concerns (though they may not often say it the best of ways)
how often do you see a main protagonist that is black? compared to white guys?
how often do you get to play female as a main character in a game? versus being force to play as a guy?
now how often have you seen a black female as the main character of a game?
yeah, exactly.
i like to play as females myself in games when possible, because i am one, and quite frankly, i'm tired of my avatars being male. ultimately though, if the game is good i'll still enjoy it. will it take away from the game any? No, but it will certainly add that much more for me if i do get to play as female.
it's about immersion though, that's what made DAO great. Because being female or an elf, or dwarf wasn't really just an after thought or one tiny sidequest. the dialouge changed, the companions acted towards you different, etc. people who want more black people just want to be represented more and have a more immersive gameplay experience. it's really not that hard to understand.
sure there may not be an Africa or America but that doesn't mean their can't be more than a handful of skintones, and i think we all know that by that people mean they want something darker than "tan" or "golden".
and before this gets quoted with the same old "you had the option to be w/e in origins!", my reply to you is, yes, thank you, we are aware, but i believe the main concern was with the environment in general, and not the PC (despite the fact that i used main characters from other games as examples), because when you run around the world being the only black/asian/hispanic/indian/native american/etc. it does break immersion just a smidgeon.
then again those of us that aren't male/white/straight are probably used to that by now.

anyway, for what it's worth i thought in the original game there was a decent amount of diversity, but i cant understand if other people disagree. either way i dont think their opinions should just be brushed aside they ought to be told to "just deal with it" because some people dislike it when people express or stick up for their beliefs.
personally i think it would be awesome if we saw not only more black humans, but black elves, dwarves, and whatever other races the tema can come up with.
