There aren;t that many African Americans, because the game is deeply based off of mideval lore, which doesn;t usually include Africans Americans.

You mean llike during the crusades where they tried to free Jerusalem and noticed all people in near east are white?

No. Just no. People are insane or what, or it's a big deal in America?

I notice that the ongoing cliche in fantasy titles revolving around medieval times is to basically create enviorments with absolutely no African Americans.I think it would be both refreshing and ground breaking if Bioware  could figure out a way to incorporate a african American in a game like Dragon Age 2.

Thedas would have no African Americans. There is neither an Africa nor an America, after all. I think what you mean is black people.

If you look at my avatar you would see that I tryed making my character BLU black and he ended up looking like a white person with a tan so what do you guy mean when you say you can make "black characters".Maybe I did something wrong?

er...i dont really think that he looks like a white guy with a tan but maybe that's just me.

perhaps try changing the hair? black guys don't really have "shaggy" facial hair when they grow beards or moustaches.

While I don't agree with the OP, people would like to be represented, wouldn't you say? It sucks to be left out.

I have no problem with this as long as they integrate the character into the story. He/she may be from a far off land or something like that, a foreigner. So long as they don't take the Oblivion route, which had no explanations whatsoever for this type of thing.

You, sir, obviosly dont know your Elder Scrolls lore!

Black people in Oblivion are redgaurds that hail from the country Hammerfell, to the norht west of Cyrodil (the land that TES4 is set in).

Been a long time since I fired up Oblivion. I stand corrected.

Well the title of the thread as others have noted is still wrong. Dark skinned should replace African American in that regard.

The topic itself is kind of pointless. What barriers? What the hell? There's likely going to be dark skinned characters popping up at some point. Like the devs say, the first game was set in an area like medieval Europe, the next one isn't as much. And as yet more people have stated, your character could have been dark skinned in Origins anyway!

FAIL

Now not only is the there that dark skinned character, he is the main chaaracter! Yeah! [crowd applauds]

I'm all for some black characters in the DA universe, but they shouldn't come across as 'African-American.' They should be based on Old World black cultures. So he should come across as being Sundanese, or something like that. Think Djimon Hounsou's character in The Four Feathers.

It's strange, isn't it, how many people in this thread seem to think that making a black character means just "dark skin?"  It's almost as if they have never actually met people in real life...

tbh african-american or afro-american is a horrible term. Most 'Afro-Americans' know Africa only from TV, so ... blah

I never know if they mean black people or people who are not white or people from america or from africa or ... whatever. I don't even know why people refer to continents or countries when they actually talk about skin color.

In the USA we tend to change what we call minorities every generation or so. African-American is past its sell-by date, but it's not quite clear what the next term is going to be.

Well what other characteristics would you like associated with them? I mean without being racist? They have big lips? They like to eat watermelon? Because there are plenty of of black people that don't fall into either of those catagories. Image IPB

The more specific you try to get outside of "dark skinned" the more likely someone is going to jump on your back and call you racist when that is clearly not what was intended. Outside of that though, there is no such thing as "one kind" of black person. The one thing they all have in common would be their dna for skin tone. As other people have pointed out, if you mean more cultural aspects, be it African-American or lit. different types of Afican cultures from that continant, there is no Africa of America in Thedas, and if there is something similar we haven't been introduced to it yet.

But yeah I do agree that clearly Will didn't bother to read, or even skim the thread because it wasn't about not being able to make a black PC, it was the lack of black NPCs and party members, hence "immersion" in my last post, that people wanted.

Just a personal opinion, and not really fuel for the debate I'm sure is here:

I seriously thought, when I first recruited Sten, that he the Qunari were supposed to be a parallel to a Fictional African culture, much like Samarkand is in the Fable video games. I saw that not only in the character models for Sten and other Qunari in the game, but also Sten's face looked as such in the Sacred Ashes trailer.

I honestly don't get how people who have stated on the boards about Qunari see them as looking like Vikings. I don't see that at all. Perhaps some cultural aspects are similar, but Qunari as of Origins and Awakening had facial features and hair more similar to African cultures than they do with Scandinavian.

Then again, I guess I'm wrong about Qunari because Dragon Age 2 has retconned Qunari to look more like horned demons than anything else... go figure. :/

I actually agreed your opinion.  Apparently some qunari look like Sten but most have horns, which does break it a bit.  I've just come to the conclusion that Thedas is a medieval europe fantasy version so really I don't perticularly care if they have African characters or not.  But if they did they'd have to have a suitable explanation or I'd be annoyed.

I completely disagree. Aside from having dark skin, they don't appear to be African at all.

...Says? They're usually called "bronze" when I see their skin-colored mentioned.

Seems further discredited by silver-skinned qunari.

@ Lord Aesir- I've been aware of the new updated lore for Qunari and that Sten is supposed to be special according to it. I meant more with my comment that Bioware was kinda "forcing" us to just accept an obvious retcon without question by adding in a "wedged-in" lore update.

@ Saibh- Don't worry, I don't mind the tagline in the pic, and found it funny and actually supported your point. However, I still disagree with you even after looking at the pic. But everyone's opinions, eyes, and viewpoints are different. I just see something different than what you see...

I honestly don't see it. He doesn't have any of the features typically associated with Africans, besides dark skin.
