Save Game Problems

A while back I made copies of my ME1 and 2 files on a disc, should something happen to my computer in the future. And, of course, it did; had to wipe my computer to get it working again a few weeks back.
Now when I reinstalled ME1 and 2, I copied the files I saved on the disc to the new folders. However, it didn't seem to save much; my in-game achievements were all gone, but I didn't care too much about that. My old characters in ME1, however, were all gone. I figured I might as well suck it up and do a new Shepard, which I did. I finished the first game, and moved onto the second, where I'm running into the problem I'm hoping you guys can help me out with.
I loaded ME2 and went to continue my new character. I was surprised to see that all my old characters were there ready to be continued. However, my newest character wasn't there. I know how to convert the ME1 saves to ME2; but to be safe I did it again. I expected to see the new guy in there, but he wasn't there. So I made another ME1 save folder with all the data from the original in it, then tried bringing that over. No dice.
I deleted all the character data from the second game (all my old characters that were available to continue) then tried bringing over my first game saves again. Still didn't work. So at this point I figured that copying all my old folders to the new ones may be the culprit. I reinstalled ME2 and didn't copy the files on the CD to it. Brought over the ME1 saves and loaded it up; still saying my old characters are there, with no option to continue my newest guy.
At this point I just gave up trying to figure it out on my own, and here I am. I was thinking about reinstalling ME1 with new files (But saving the data of my newest guy). What do you fellows suggest?

You didn't say what is your OS, I will assume Vista/7.
Did you use the configuration utility to import your ME1 savegames?
If you did, a folder called "ME1" will be created in the "saves" folder of ME2, located in "\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save".
You can simply copy manually whatever saves from the first game and put them in the "ME1" folder after you use the utility.
If the utility is given you trouble, you can create the folder called "ME1" in ME2 save folder.
I did this myself and worked without a problem.
After you did this, try to copy the files manually, the saves from ME1 is different from the single file from ME2.
You have to copy two files:
One Like this : Jane01_02
And other like this: Char_01-36-3-1-5-25-1-2010-10-24
The first is your savegame in progresss and the other is your character.
Copy the "Char****" file and the last save to the ME1 folder inside ME2 saves.
Hope this helps

Yes, I used the confiuration utility, but I'll give your suggestion a go and see if it works.

I reinstalled the games to start over clean, and was going to try your idea about manually putting the ME1 save folder into the ME2 save file. But I noticed that for some reason, there is no "Save" folder in my ME2 files. I'll make one myself, but shouldn't that have been included?
For reference, the only folders in my ME2 files are:
Binaries
BioGame
data
docs
Engine
redist
the install.vdf, game key
And finally the launch application

There are 2 Mass Effect folders...
The folder where you install the game.. that should be something like C:\\\\program files\\\\bioware\\\\Mass Effect
and the folder where the game keeps all player's data (including the saves) that is in the root mydocuments\\\\bioware\\\\mass effect of your windows profile.
They could be also in two different partition in case you installed the game on a partition which was different from your windows partition...for example in D:
Anyway.. you can install the game wherever you want, but your saves game will be always stored in the folder mydocuments of your windows profile

Didn't do that before, I'll have to try that too. But now I'm wondering if I use the utility config on the files in my documents, and that doesn't work, what will I do then?
Can never be easy, can it? <_<

errr... the problem now could be another.. did you format your PC?
If so did you save the ME1 and Me2 files stored into the folder mydocument of your profile before you erased everything?

No. I assume that means the copies I put on the discs are kinda worthless

ouch... that hurts !! This means that all your saved games before you formatted your pc are probably gone..
anyway.. you said that you played again ME1 after your PC was reinstalled.. therefore in your mydocuments-bioware-mass effect-save folder you should find the folder of your new Shepard. What do you have in that folder?

All I wanna do is carry over my new Shepard that I played after I lost everything to ME2 without all my non-existant old ones being there, with no option to bring over my new guy. Kinda driving me nuts with Liara's DLC coming out relatively soon.
Edit: Just checked, all my old guys still there; new guy nowhere to be seen. I've un and re-installed this about 2 times now, just for reference. Like I said, I'm willing to do anything, so lay any ideas you may have on me. I appreciate them
Double edit: None of the above ideas are working. I've pasted, renamed, everything. Those old characters will just not go away. Does having Steam have anything to do with it? Could the config utility be screwing up? I'm ready to do a rain dance to get rid of those old characters and use my new guy at this point

The only thing I know is that you should identify between all that bunch of saves which is the one related to your new Shepard.
How you can identify it? you have many options.. the name of the carachter, the date (if you remember when you finished your playtrough you can identify the right save looking its date/hour of creation)
Once you have identified it you should try to load it using the import tool from ME2, and then when you start the game you should find him.
Perhaps you should uninstall and reinstall ME2 without copying the files you saved on the disk, just to have a fresh install before to import the carachter
Unless steam version works in a different way but I don't think so...

I did. When I said I un and reinstalled the game 2 times, I did it without copying those old files in. They literally are sticking like glue, they will not go away. Steam doesn't back ME1 or 2 up with their cloud files like they do with games like TF2, so I know that the old ones can't be coming from Steam.
Oh, and save files are supposed to be .rar files right? I'm tempted to use Winrar to open them, but I get the feeling that'll just mess it up even more.
Do you think if I put the discs back in and nothing else, it'll do anything?

No.. Save files aren't rar files...
This is what your save folder of ME1 games should contain
MyDocuments\\Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Save
I have 4 character in ME1

As you can see there are all the saves with the names of the caracthers and 4 saves which begins for CHAR.. those are the final saves which you can import into ME2..
You have to find the right CHAR file and import it using the ME2 tool
Once you have imported it if you open your Mass Effect 2 save folder which should be in
MyDocuments\\Bioware\\Mass Effect 2\\Saves
If the import were correct you should find something like that

Now you won't find like me the folders with the names of the carachters because they are my ME2 saves (if you haven't play it yet you won't have them) but you must have a folder named ME1 also into the ME2 save folder which contains your char files that you imported from ME1

If you have something different from that, it means that something went wrong...

Thanks, I'll try it and see how it goes. With my luck it won't work, but we'll see.
Edit: After looking in there, I found something. You see how you have all those files with you character's name and only 4 char files? In my folder it's almost the complete opposite. I've got:
5 files with my character's name (John)
7 char files
Also, it says the last time they were modified was in January, which is impossible since I did this new Shapard this month. I think that's just a screw up though.
I'll keep editing this as I go along, to see what happens when I try to your suggestion with said info.

Here's what my screen looks like:

They won't disappear no matter what I delete. Their information isn't in any of the files.
My newest Shepard is John, level 50, but he's nowhere to be seen; and no, the one in the screenshot isn't him, I checked.
I think at this point I should try to find out why they keep coming back, where their files are, and how to get rid of them permanently. I actually played it to see if it worked, and Sarah worked, regardless of the fact that I (thought) I deleted all the old files, including hers.

That loading screen that you posted is already a 2nd step.. When you click on "import character" into game menu it just read that ME1 folder into ME2 saves, not the original ME1 save folder.
If you remember there is a first step which you must perform, that is click on configuration from the game's startup menu, then click on 'save games' in the upper left, then browse to find the original ME1 "save" folder then save and exit and then start up the game.
This operation update your ME1 save folder in ME2 with the original ME1 save folder importing all the present characters. If you do a new ME1 playtrough after you already imported your ME1 save you won't see that character available for ME2 until you repeat this operation. And this is what happened. You have 7 char files in ME1 original folder and just 6 character available in ME2. This means that you forget the 1st step...
Do it, and you'll see that after that, when you'll start the game you'll have your new Shepard available...

In that case you should try to load one of the latest saves, play the ending of the game and see if a new char ending save is generated by the game. Then repeat the whole import operation
If you start ME1 and you don't find him in the available games then that means either that:
1) you lose for some reason the saves of that character
2) the saves of that character are not in the correct path -
maybe you can also scan all you drive searching for files char* just to see if they have been moved in a different path.

That's the one thing that actually is working. I've played the ending a few times and tried importing it again, but strangely it won't work. I'm 49 at the last autosave, but beating Saren gives me Level 50, which is how I know what to look for in my new Shep.

So. are you really sure that you won't have already your new Shepard in the available ME2 characters, but you are confident there isn't because you are looking for a lev 50 character when he is at level 49?
