I did not play DA:O yet (even if I bought it) because I am waiting for my university to finish...

But I want to know what RPG you think have the title of being the best RPG of all time

The graphics are the only thing that can't count by choosing you're RPG (BG is a good RPG but it graphics are no good today)

My choice (like many other) is BG

My 2 main reasons:

1- Story:  BG is the most involving game I have ever played.... I think what made the story of this game so good is the fact that the story was multiple and it was not another saving the world thing....you had to find out about yourself....who you are...who killed Gorion...what is the Iron Throne...and all of that continues in BG2

2- Gameplay: Challenging, rewarding, fun etc...

I also like the world, the atmosphere, the incredible number of UNIQUE sidequest (more in BG2), personnel attachement to companions, unbalanced battles and unbalanced items made this game great and more more more

What about you?

combat is subpar, but not horrible (only real weakness)
companions are unquie (the skull guys is awsome!)
great story, as i said my fav
great dialog, with many options, and pathways affected by skill, stats, and choices
varied areas

u might like other games better but if u like bg u will like it quite a bit

Did you play Planescape: Torment? Because the 2 reasons you listed I think were even better in that game. Unless you just don't like linear RPG's with a lot more story than combat, then Torment is as good as it gets. I also think it is too soon to compare DA with the others.

EDIT: Hehe someone beat me to it.

Planescape: Torment is still my favorite of all time. What an excellent story and a really interesting setting.

I have to say that thus far, DAO is my favorite RPG of all time :P

I love highly tactical RPGs where combat is rarely exactly the same twice with a strong storyline and memorable characters. DAO basically gives me everything I could want in an RPG.

I'm not saying it's perfect. In fact, I have criticized a number of flaws in DOA on this forum. But I still have probably not played an RPG that has sucked me more effectively.

Torment is sort of incomparable in its ambition but the combat does suck, and the second half of the game drags with filler fights.

Never played anything like Dragon Age: Origins before in my life so currently it's my favourite RPG.

Addictive, challenging combat system.

Rich storytelling and varied characters.

Choice and consequence without some kind of karrma meter.

Great art design and pretty good looking too for a game of it's scope.

Great storyline (with lots of political intrigue). Great graphics back then (bit outdated these days), but even today the graphics are ok. Awesome atmosphere. Crafting was interesting.

EDIT: plus tons of user made mods and a great editor.

KOTOR and Neverwinter Nights for more typical RPGs.

In the blurred lines of RPG/Action:

Dark Forces2: Jedi Knight

Wing Commander 3 and 4

Easy choice, Rings of Power. A game that may still be in EA's back catalogue (if it is, Bioware, I implore you, steal it and make it into a big expansion for DA, PLEASE). It was made by NAugthy Dog software and Published by EA.

If you've never heard of it, then I pity you. When it was eleased it faired badly because its ambition was far greater than the platform could allow (Sega Megadrive/Genesis).

It was tought o play because it appeared to be laggy as hell, but it was just that the animaions were incredibly poor to allow for the sheer size of the game. The game world was easily equal in size to that of Oblivion, perhaps larger, and it was all open world, you only had to change cells when entering buildings or 'zooming in' to the map (the world map had you as a large avatar walking around the world in a sort of over view, and if you needed to see something close up, you had to zoom in, which usually happened when you were attacked in a random event).

What I loved the most was that this was the first game that really introduced me to heavy storylines and questing (before this I'd really only played the other Genesis RPG's such as Shining in the Darkness, and they didn't do much with the whol 'questing' line). In truth, the whole game first took me about 60 or so hours to complete, an amazing feat for a console game of the time, (and considering the averae console game length, it's still bloody amazing). The size of the game, the scope, the story, the characters, everything was just so deep and satisfying, and this was back in 1992! Yeah, Im sure PC had it's share of games which were equal and better in terms of size and scope et, but we couldn't afford a home computer, it was years before I finally got to playing BG or Planescape etc, and considering what else was on offer, Rings of Power was truly phenomenal. If you can find a way to play it, do so. Yes it requires some time to get used to how it handles and plays, and it being quite ugly and laggy, it can be quite daunting, but once you do play it, it's worth playing to the end for how awesome it is.

A tie between BG2 and Xenogears. Those two are, by far, the best I've ever played.

Because my name is a reference to a Simpson's episode, not the game or the band. :)

Also because I think FO3 is the best one of the series. Yeah I went there. I tried to replay FO1 recently and didn't get past the quest to save the girl from the raiders. The combat system just drags too much and I got bored with it. For a game to be considered best of all time, it has to stand the test of time.

I love Dragon Age Origins, but Best. RPG. EVER. would have to be for me Ultima 7: The Black Gate.

Awesome story, good characters to take with you and you could upset them just like you can in DAO, but in U7 you could go anywhere, do almost anything, there was a day night cycle, you could sleep in beds, you had to eat, you could even make your own bread! games could actually do these things again with decent graphics so I await for someone to do that, but Ultima 7 just had some of the most memorable characters I can Remember, Iolo, Dupre, Shamino, Lord British.

Actually another Awesome RPG up there with Ultima for me is Albion. That game was utterly awesome for me, turn based combat but it the story was awesome, scifi/fantasy,
