Vampire Bloodlines

Dialogue choices are fantastic, especially for Malkavian.

A very honorable second position after Planescape: Torment. I mean in my case. I share the same passion for playing Malkavian.

I have to say that thus far, DAO is my favorite RPG of all time :P

I love highly tactical RPGs where combat is rarely exactly the same twice with a strong storyline and memorable characters. DAO basically gives me everything I could want in an RPG.

I'm not saying it's perfect. In fact, I have criticized a number of flaws in DOA on this forum. But I still have probably not played an RPG that has sucked me more effectively.

I like to hear that....Can't wait to open my game and play it...gonna finish those god dam exams! When I open the box with the game and start playing my girlfriend is going to leave me lol

Good luck with your exams. And accept my gratitude for your Strong Will trait. I cannot imagine myself studying for the exam while having a new very expected RPG still unpacked within reach.

Final Fantasy III(VI) for the Snes is my all time favorite game. I rented it during the summer, played it all day every day for a week. Then after I returned it I couldn't help wanting to play it all again and scrapped together the $80 to buy it. (yeah, that's right, games used to cost $80 and that's early 90's money. yay cartridges). That game has so many memorable moments (the opera, waking up on the island etc.) and the MUSIC! Just the best. KOTOR is way up there for me too. Seriously, RPG fans are blessed because we have so many great games to play and can enjoy the classics. I don't think any other genre so consistantly gives the same value playing time for $ ratio. (no, COD does not count as it's own genre)

It seems that no one has yet mentioned one great RPG: System Shock 2. The story was a bit Alien-like cliché, but the atmosphere ... I was scared s-h-i-t-less when playing it, I didn't even want to go to toilet in the dark!

Easily Baldur's Gate series, Fallout 1&2, Planescape Torment and FF6

Baldur's Gate -
Awesome story, awesome antagonist, Irenicus who has the best voice-acting in a game ever, David Warner ftw. Totally memorable party members especially Minsc who is voiced by Jim Cummings. Awesome combat: challenging, extremely challenging in Throne of Bhaal and extremely rewarding. A great variety of monsters each requiring different strategies.
Huge in scope, many places to explore and quest. Places have great art and atmosphere to them. Amn, Underdark, Suldanesselar etc etc etc.
Brilliant music
Totally awesome endings for each and every character.

Planescape Torment
Best story in an RPG ever, nuff said.
Great companions, the endings will stick in your head for years to come.
Amazing places to explore, awesome art

Fallout 1&2
SPECIAL system, gives u total freedom on how u want to build your character, I was an unarmed, melee specialist.
Kickass story
Awesome combat with lots of choices
Amazing post apolocalytic world.

FF6
Characters, beautiful story, crazy crazy villian, Kefka, has some of the best ingame music ever.

Glad to see so many people mention Planescape. Its not just my favorite CRPG its my favorite Computer Game, ever.

I'm surprised to see so many people mention Morrowind and so little mention of Oblivion. Personally I've loved every one of the Elder Scrolls games since way back with Arena.

I've tried many of the FFs but the only one that's ever seriously grabbed me was FF X.

I have always pondered this question myself, and I think it is terribly difficult to answer. There are so many aspects to think about when thinking about the greatest game. Is it playability, story, atmosphere, amount of tears, amount of laughter, amount of time it dwells in my thoughts, is it dialogue, is it combat, is it graphics, is it milieu, is it length, replay value? Because I think it's just so happens that with the greatest games ever made there is no one game that wins on everry aspect. It usually comes down to three:

- KoTOR, it was my first love on the RPG front and ever since nothing else quite cut it for me. Story, dialogue, gameplay, it's all top notch.

- Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, the setting is very atmospheric, dialogue is possibly the best of all games I've played, very witty, and even bugged (these days very fixed due fan patches and mods) the atmosphere has made me always think about it and it has well lasted many replays. It's fun.

- The Witcher: I instantly got sucked in the atmosphere and story, great main character, dialogue is good and plenty, combat is engaging, talents interesting, and the story really builds up and the missus has had to listen a plenty of bilgewater from me about it.

I think that ought to be my top three. Mass Effect wasn't bad, I was thinking of mentioning it but all in all it's very short and lacks sidequests so even though the story is good and it's above anything on cinematic level, I'll wait till ME2 to get the game on the list!

Dragon Age? Yeah, it's gonne be up there, just have to finish it completely first.

Im surprised nobody has mentioned Chrono Trigger yet. One of, if not the most, celebrated RPGs ever, and Squaresoft`s finest work. Honorable mentions to FF7, Baldurs Gate 2, and Fallout 3. Outstanding role-playing games as well.

Possibly Planescape Torment, but quite probably The Witcher. The developers of that game put so much loving creation into it, it's a truly remarkable game in this day and age, and really has some excellent qualities to it. Very singular.

Nobody mentions really old ones. Eye of teh Beholder 2 was great, still remember spending weeks on it. Lol, blast from the past. Apart from thet BG2 on par with Planescape.

Morrowind for me, one of my first RPG's.

For me, the gameworld in Morrowind just completely sucked me in. I love that you were forced to explore because you had to walk almost everywhere you went. As long as it wasn't a major city or town. Also, you could wander around forever without ever doing the main quest, you were just so free!

Also I was reminded by this forum about Nox, which was a great game in my taste, at least back then it was :P

The games set in the Dark Eye universe were possibly what convinced me to be a RPGer for the rest of my life. Today they must look horribly dated (although Drakensang is a worthy successor), but they were great fun and definitely built up my interest in Fantasy as a genre.

I also found that the Guild Wars series of games makes for a great single player RPG experience (despite being marketed as a MMO), with amazing atmosphere and immersion. It's not entirely unlike DA:O in style and direction, if less realistic in its NPC encounters.

I also remember being quite charmed by Stonekeep in the late 90s.

Add my name to Planescape: Torment too.

Briliantly funny, fantastic storyline and real memorable characters.

Looking a little dated now, but still one of the old school hames that sits on my hard drive...much much better if you get the scree resoltion mod to make it a little bigger and have it in widescreen too :)

Almost like playing a new game again.

After that I would have to say BG2, Fallout, closely followed by the original Diablo.

I love Sci-Fi verry mutch so Star Wars KOTOR was EPIC!!! The came Mass Effeckt and what a great game... Now this game... DA:O... Its Mass Effeckt AND Baldur's Gate at once... How can it GET any cooler?!? I don't think I want to know yet.... Think I will just play this game over and over!!! Perhaps until Christmas next year... THEN i want to see something new once again!!!

The best story and plot would make it Planescape Torment, but if we are talking overall best single player rpg game then i will have to go with with either BG2 or DAO. DAO is starting to convince me that it might be better thant BG2 but i will have to play some more to decide.

The Morrowing/Oblivion series i never could stand playing for more than a few hours (even though i tried really hard to like oblivion). It felt more like a first person shooter exploration game with some adventure elements than an RPG.

Oblivion is my favourite. For the freedom, for the sneaking. It was immensely refreshing to play this game where you could spit in the face of destiny and simply go off and do your own thing. And I'll never tire of crawling up behind the nastiest beasties in absolute secrecy and putting arrows into their backs. Hearing their savage cries of rage, watching them thrash about trying to discover me...ahh, bliss.

yeah... "what is you are favorite rpg...."

lolgrammar.

to answer your question, my two favourite RPGs are Mass effect and Knight of the Old Republic. I like the sci-fi stuff more so than the fantasy stuff, but still, I like games like DAO too.

Fallout 1, hands down. Best setting, so original and unique. Great dialogue, choices and consequences, and I really liked the SPECIAL system.

Arcanum had a great setting also, with the struggle between technology and magic, and except for a few flaws (one of them being combat) that game had real potential.

BG (of course) made me a fan of Real Time w/ Pause combat. I still feel turn-based is more tactical, but I loved the way combat flowed with the RTwP that was introduced in BG. Not to mention the characters, story, etc.

Vampire: Bloodlines - so very atmospheric! It's fatal flaw was the realtime combat. The more the player controls the character's combat, the less I like the RPG (not counting ACTION RPG in the discussion). I am a numbers guy and an old school PnP player. I enjoy scultping a character and then seeing how well he can handle himself in the GM's environment. Of course the player has to think for the created character, but I want to see how the build stands up to the challenges on it's own, as much as possible.

Morrowind - nice idea, big expansive world, but found it extremely boring. And the 'dialogue' system was horrible. Wiki FTL.

Dragon Age: Origins - Best Bioware game since BG2 - and that is saying A LOT! I have played KOTOR (and enjoyed it), but have not played Mass Effect since I don't own a 360. I currently game on the PS3 and despite my nerfed camera I am finding combat more enjoyable the more I get used to it (and the customizable tactics available for your party). I do miss the spell chanting of mages from the BG games (as others have noted) but overall I much prefer the tactical combat as opposed to the Diablo spamming from the less tactical realtime games. The story is wonderful, the side quests feel like main quests, the dialogue is superb, and the NPC party interaction is the most advanced I have seen to date. I like the way they not only argue with each other, but with story based NPCs during MY DIALOGUE! Well done Bioware!

Final Fantasy 6. Great story, a lot of character choices. Didn't require a huge amount of level grinding, but still some.

Dragon Age Origins may be #2 to me by the time I finish playing it.

Baldur's Gate series, Icewind Dale with Heart of Winter and Trials of the Luremaster, and Chrono Trigger.

I'm loving DA so far, and it definitely has the potential to get onto that list, but I need some more time with it before I can say for sure B)
