As others have said, they are both good. I find both have particular lines and scenes they deliver individually well. They also each have their unique lines that make me cringe. It is still nice to see the breadth of their work.

My 2 favorite Hale characters are Naomi Hunter and Bastila. My favorite Mark Meer character is -EDIT- The Watcher from Jade Empire!

Hale is an amazing voice actress.... but the women here promote her acting simply because she's a girl, and not for the gigantic pool of talent that she is... She's done a very very wide range of acting, and in every single on of her performances, she's spot on. Same with ME 1 and 2.

I don't think that's a universal truth.

I hated her as Bastilla. Hated. Hated. Hated. Everytime I heard Bastilla speak I wanted to kick kittens. And I'm a cat lover.

See, that's weird, because I love Hale as Bastila, but I'm mostly lukewarm to her work as Shepard. Different strokes, I guess.

MaleShep is the best. Femshep sounds really different and a bit corny.

FemShep has enough emotional inflections to grant you the illusion of playing a person, and not an ambulatory strip of plywood.
MaleShep is an ambulatory strip of plywood.

Maleshep.

Jennifer Hale is a great voice actress, just not in Mass Effect when playing Commander Shepard. How someone can sound so fake, and boring at the same time I will never know. Regardless, due to her voice acting, I was fundamentally unable to get past the citadel on an ME1 playthrough years ago, and have never bothered since.

Meer has many flaws that get on my nerves in his performance from time to time, but on the whole I think hes the far superior, and I definitely enjoy his performance overall, making me feel like Shepard isnt some fraud trying to sound tough.

This. This on toast. Ok, Hale's reading of the lines with Jacob chafe as much as sex with Garrus, but she actually bothers to sound amused, irritated, out-of-breath, sympathetic, etc. in her dialogue through pretty much the entire game, while Meer (no disrespect to the guy) tends to read Shepard as a very one-note action hero in almost every damn scene.

I only played female, so hard to say. I did test male, but it did not feel right. I don't think it was just voice. How ever, female voice is well done.

Personally, I prefer Meer over Hale but both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Hale is good at sounding more emotional and and has better paragon lines.  Hale does a good renegade as well but it's not as good as Meer's.  But the main thing is that I despise her dialogue with Jacob in ME2.  It basically felt like she was coming on to him when you truly didn't want to.

Meer is better at being renegade and does well on the speeches and longer lines of dialogue.  He also sounds more military than Hale in behavior and that is the main thing I prefer.  While Hale's lines are more emotionally driven and that is nice, it just doesn't work as well for a character that is career military.

As mentioned, Hale was superior in Me1. Meer wins Round 2. There's something about hale in 2.

This definitely; it baffled me how Jennifer Hale seemed so....flat as Shepard.  I loved her as Bastilla and Mazzy from BG II (didn't care for her as Dynaheir) but it just didn't seem....right.  Meer WAS Shepard for me; yeah, there were times he would make me cringe, but overall, he seemed to deliver as someone that had more inflection in his voice.

Hale didn't do too bad in ME 1, but for some reason in ME 2, it just seemed to become monotone to me.

I totally agree.

Both Hale and Meer did a lot of bit parts and did those really well in ME1 and ME2 but as Shepard both werent s great as they could have been.
I am a MaleShep player but I definately prefer Hale's voice acting. At least she actually sounds like she is into what she is doing, like she was actually trying; even if she isnt fantastic at it.
Meer just sounds bored and flat all the time. The emotional inflections and the like in his dialogue just dont fit with the context of what he is saying pretty much the WHOLE game.

The people who think that he did a better job as Shepard must be playing a different game from me.

Every time femshep speaks obviously - thats my entire point. Every time I hear femshep speak, its like listening to someone trying to sound like a commander, as opposed to listening to a commander. As often as I find Meer gets it wrong, I dont know of a single time Hale gets it right.

Hale has many strengths as a voice actress, and trying to sound gruff and authorative isnt one of them if you ask me. Ive known that since Baldurs Gate. She should stick to characters like Dynaheir, Mazzy Fentan, Bastila, Naomi Hunter etc. I think they work better with her voice.

Played male shep first on ME and it was fun. Then did a second playthrough as femshep and the game became about 100 times better!!! So many of the scenes with maleshep just became dull in comparison.

Mass Effect and ME2 is femshep for me. Due a great deal to Jennifer Hales great voice acting.

Im going with FShep. Havent even gotten a guy shep past the 2 plot world yet. Ive tried around 5 aborted Male playthrus since the lost of my save files . Sorry Ash. I hear Meer is better in ME2 but unless I can port from one I dont see any male shep I create getting thru the trilogy.

I'm for male shep because he wins in "I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite store in the citadel."(I watch the femshep version I was unimpressed.) and his been my character since ME!

But Femshep out stand it on the romances especially on Garrus and Thane.

Jennifer Hale seems to better understand that Shepard isn't just a straight soldier that follows orders, but a leader and a champion for humanity.

Fem sheep seems off to me, as ReconTeam says, she's just creepy.

Maleshep feels perfect for the part. And while I'm a guy I don't always go for male avatars in games, it's just ME just doesn't feel right to me with a women as the lead.

DA:O, it felt fine. I guess it might be the voice acting.

Femshep and consequently Jennifer Hale definitely! Although, I must add that I was disappointed with her somewhat lackluster voice work in ME2 compared to ME1. She was still great but I felt she sometimes lacked in appropriate context bound inflections and tones; the nuance and passion from the first game just wasn't there.

Perhaps VA Direction in ME2 was dumbed down as well, becoming more one-dimensional and monotone.

To Me Male Shep is best at sounding Paragon and Femshep is better sounding as Renegade, but if i have to choose I go with Male Shep.

  • Not this again.  <_<
  • Mark Meer is quite talented.  He did the voice of the Biotic God.
  • BW must have watched too many Jean Claude Van Damme/Steven Segal/early Arnold Schwarzenegger movies and said, "That's it! That's what we want! Bland, monotone, unemotional. It's perfect!"
  • Even if you're not the best  actor in the world, you don't have to be an emotionless brick to be a badass. BW should take notes.
  • All that said, Meer has his moments in ME2.  Hales falls flat far more often in ME2 than in ME1, still I prefer her performance.
  • femShep voice.  Some say gruff, others say husky
  • Everybody's different and has their own tastes and opinons.  Mine is that ME plays better w/ a female lead. Hale gives a better performance and it's not the same old same old.
