Yeah that's how the Zevran fan thread started, which I believe was the genesis of gushing on the boards.  The Alistair one sort of mushroomed out of a simple "hey this was cool" posting.

I had a mage cowl, Libertarian style, crafted on the winter forge, just for him, so he could run around Ferlden looking like a giant silver and purple Orlesian condom. As penance.

And the old (Already proven false by canon) arguments:

Plotted to have the Couslands killed
