Loghain as a geography teacher. That would be awesome.

ToP: speaking of maps

As long as he doesn't suddenly swing a cane from behind his back that's fine by me^^

I'm only wondering if his knowledge of geography extends farther than the Fereldan border. Well, he knows where Orlais is, obviously...

He likes maps of the Imperium, Anderfels and even a map showing where rare plants are found in Thedas (influence from his wife?...awww).

I wonder how Anora feels about maps.

I know, I know... I was just questioning his... dedication to countries other than his own in this respect (as well as in any other, actually^^)

Well I can't see him being pissed off at territorial disputes of other countries, that's for sure ha.

@ Sarah. Come to think of it, what kind of gifts Anora would like if she was a companion? I would think books, since she is apparently enlightened. Maybe plants that remind her of her childhood?

I don't think she hates maps. I would think she has basic knowledge of geography and trade routes.

You can't take books, they belong to Wynne. I'm guessing Anora has a secret passion that has nothing to do with her calculating and cold demeanour...^^

Anora would probably be a secret chocolate hound.

You gotta respect the rebel generation for the fact that they got their education on the fly, so would probably have been self-taught on a lot of things. That makes me <3 them more. I imagine Loghain had a start with his parents and then Mother Ailis. She comments on Maric being an educated man with surprise, and he says his mother made him learn stuff like the Chant.

Either that or she sports a freaky leather fetish. Or plush.

For Anora, a Teagan blow-up doll.

I mean, she might be the ice queen, but she's still only human.

What about the Map of Occupied Ferelden that's available as a "gift", I think in the Alienage shop? I don't think it's a found gift, but it's not a Feastday Prank, either, which is what I thought it should be when I saw it. I would never give that to Loghain, even if the game is programmed for him to approve of it. It makes no sense.

Why not? He can still analyze the map. I mean , I look at maps of my country and very close neighboring countries, including occupied territories. And I don't get pissed off, unless maybe someone was like "ha ha! Take a good look!".

I think he has a general interest in maps and I don't think he would mind. Unless you wrote "I want Orlais back" on the map lol. But I don't think this is an endorsement to Ferelden occuptation, it's just a historical fact.

I guess not. It just doesn't seem very tasteful as a gift. I can see him picking one up, or finding one lying around, and keeping it to remember by, glower over or use as a "lest we forget" kind of warning, but I just can't see myself/the PC buying one in a shop and presenting it to him with the idea that he would like it. Warden: "Here, I saw this in the Alienage and thought of you." Loghain: ". . .and thought what of me, exactly?"

If I could put a card in it that said something to that effect, it would work. =]

I have a couple of gifts in the Soldier's Peak chest that I've been saving for when I finally pick him up --and it won't be long now, thank the Maker; I'm finally out of Orzammar and prowling around Denerim pre-Landsmeet. They aren't maps; I don't think I've encountered any maps yet but I have found two or three gifts that don't seem to suit anyone else and I have a sneaking suspicion that one or more of them are meant for him. Or at least, will get a good response from him. There are some Easter-egg gifts lying around outside of what the Codex recommends that get a +6-8 response when given to the right characters. There are also some gifts, like the Fancy Scroll, that I have no idea who the heck they're meant for. I gave that one to Leliana because it was fancy and shiny, but only got a "Why. . .thank you so much." +1 from her. <_< Same thing with the Tiara that you can steal from the obnoxious noblewoman in the Denerim marketplace --you'd think she'd be all over that, but no. And I sure wasn't going to try giving it to Morrigan. She'd probably turn into a spider and bite my head off and I wouldn't blame her.

Anyway, if there are any Easter-egg gifts for Loghain, please don't tell me; I want to find out on my own. :bandit:

Fancy scroll is for Wynne I think. I won't spoil the gifts for you, but if you want info, the DA wikia has a whole list of gifts and what companions prefer.

I agree. It's a testament to his accomplishments. He can look at the occupied map and look at a current map and think "I did that."

See, that's what I mean by an Easter egg. The Codex tells you she likes books, but the Scroll is a scroll, and Wynne's not the fancy type, so it just doesn't occur to me to give that to her. The Codex also doesn't mention that

***potential gift spoilers****

Wynne likes wine, that Alistair mostly likes ale but will also give +6 approval for the bottle of wine Dog sometimes finds you, and that Sten will appreciate certain statues as much as Alistair does.

****end spoilers****

Which is fine with me; I enjoy not having all that knowledge handed to me and being able to figure that stuff out on my own. But in some cases when you do make the right call or are told the answer to the riddle, it makes sense; other times, like with the Fancy Scroll, I'm still going "huh"?

Amusingly enough, one of the first gifts I found after defiling the Ashes and driving Wynne away was a book. I gave it to Morrigan, because it was the one about how Andraste might have been a witch and I thought she might appreciate it. Nope. . .+1.

Wynne likes wine, that Alistair mostly likes ale but will also give +6 approval for the bottle of wine Dog sometimes finds you, and that Sten will appreciate certain statues as much as Alistair does.

You must not have heard this banter then:

Oghren: So, Wynne... how do you know so bleeding much about ale? Have some tawdry tale of misspent youth to tell?

Wynne: Nothing quite so interesting, my friend. The Tranquil mages of the Circle just happen to be alchemial miracle-workers, and they brew more than just potions. There was always a pitcher or two of fine ale at our supper table.

Oghren: Well, bless my britches... Maybe when all this is done I'll chat up one or two of them quiet mages.

Wynne: Uh, Tranquil.

Oghren: Tranquil, quiet, insipid... same difference.

Or this remark:

(entering Gnawed Noble Tavern) "I wonder if they have a good plum wine..."

@Sarah: Haha, no. . .I did get the banter in which Oghren, after much coaxing, gets Wynne to try his special brew. At first she acts as though ale is really not her thing but then proceeds to give it a rather detailed critique and then declares that she likes it. Does the dialogue you quote come after that?

But still, all that comes in the banter, not the Codex. Same thing with Alistair. If you don't trigger the "Grey Warden drinking contest" dialogue with him, you might not get that hint.

I don't remember. I think it's more organic to hear in conversation that people like various things rather than just reading their codex because the Warden's not going to have access to that and if you're metagaming by reading the codex on them then why not metagame by looking up their gifts?

Does Sten ever give any indication of his appreciation for paintings outside of his codex entry? It honestly would never have occurred to me that he would like them, and for the longest time I just sold them.

IMO he would believe it is something important to remember.  That was my guess on the meaning of his wearing the River Dane armor, too.  He doesn't want to ever forget, or for anyone else to forget, what it was like.
