I don't see how the arls or teryns would control the Bannorn, certainly they have their own minor banns ( or maybe not if you by codex ), but I cannot see them having control over the Banns in the Bannorn.
Anyway, good read.

You're probably right about that. I made a small change to say that he was relying on estimates by neighboring arls.Costin_Razvan wrote...

I don't know whether to think that Loghain is being too stuck in the past and fighting an old war, or to be as suspicous as he is. If if he were right, he seems almost powerless to do anything about it, despite being a teyrn.

His powerlessness, that is something I felt in this chapter too and I think that probably informs a lot of what will come. If you feel like you're the lone man on the field, and so much is at stake, you're willing to do things you might not otherwise do. But now I'm saying too much!

What? The Couslands and Eamon appear to be equally responsible for this business with Orlais and someone mentioned something about how this could be providing Loghain with a reason to believe Howe when he claims that the Couslands are traitors. I like the Couslands more than Eamon. Why is it weird orAddai67 wrote...

@phaonica, I imagine it is all in how you look at it. Which is why I tried to show minor characters that both agree and disagree with him. He's not the only one for whom the idea of Orlesians in Ferelden is nightmare fuel. What I didn't show so much in this chapter, and might redress later on, is that I don't think he's as bothered by the idea of trade with Orlais as the possible political implications. And he wants to know that Ferelden is going to always have the upper hand. As I wrote him, he was open to foreign trade when Maric was alive, seeing it as an unpleasant necessity.
Agreed. I don't think he'd feel like Ferelden should have *nothing* to do with Orlais, and while it's probably in Ferelden's best interest to be on as friendly terms with Orlais as possible, like you said, Loghain would be concerned with Ferelden not becoming economically dependant or politically beholden to Orlais.
Exactly, because while I was thinking to myself about the nobles, "hey, they can't go around making political connections with Orlaisian nobility behind the king's back, can they?" Chances are, Cailan would encourage it. Not that those connections are all bad, just that I wouldn't trust Cailan to police it properly.I imagine he feels a lot less secure with Cailan in charge (and hey, who wouldn't).
As little support and control that the king seems to have over the bannorn, and with the nobles just doing whatever they want, and with Cailan's likeliness to back them and not Loghain (for both politcial and personal reasons), there doesn't seem to be a damn thing Loghain could do about it (short of poisoning someone, of courseHis powerlessness, that is something I felt in this chapter too
Normally I read these fics for the romance in them and I'm usually not captivated by the politics in them, but this one sure has me on both fronts!and I think that probably informs a lot of what will come. (linking due to bad language)-inducing to rather that Eamon die instead of the Couslands or that if the Couslands do end up dying Eamon is already out of the way so that he's not around to muck everything up like he does in game?

I don't think there is much he can do in this situation, but I don't understand why he was caught by surprise, suspicious as he is I would assume he has a few spies on his payroll to know what is going on, unless he doesn't trust the spies.phaonica wrote...

As I read Fereldan politics, not all roads lead to or through Denerim so the teyrnirs (and Eamon, who wants to be a teyrn or something important really really bad) can have a bit of independent foreign policy. In this case, if people are wanting to take a more direct hand, it's because they perceive Cailan as weak. And eventually the tail can end up wagging the dog. Not like Cailan has a lot of original foreign policy ideas... but now I'm getting ahead of myself again.phaonica wrote...

One of the things that stuck out in that old thread on TST was Gaider saying that Loghain had a lot of guilt about not being able to defend his mother. The feeling of powerlessness is sadly not new to him.As little support and control that the king seems to have over the bannorn, and with the nobles just doing whatever they want, and with Cailan's likeliness to back them and not Loghain (for both politcial and personal reasons), there doesn't seem to be a damn thing Loghain could do about it (short of poisoning someone, of courseHis powerlessness, that is something I felt in this chapter too

Yea, I talked about that a while ago.
I think that was the point. The Orlesian chevaliers wanted him to feel powerless and helpless while watching it all happen. That could break people really.
A very similar thing happens in Origins, and he can't let go because I think he doesn't want to admit he is somewhat powerless.
Sigh. Can't wait to get my new PC so I can play the game agan.
And BTW, I'll catch up on your FF once I am done with my essays

First of all, that name - Teyrn Loghain Mac Tir. It just sounds so badass. But anyway:
He's one of my favourite four characters in Dragon Age so far. I think this stems from the fact that opposing him is something difficult to do, even though it is necessary. Loghain is a national hero, and Ser Cauthrien is absolutely right when she says I'm opposing the very man who ensured I was born into freedom. There is no satisfaction to be found in bringing down such a man, but it has to be done. And of course, Simon Templeman's voice acting throughout the game is absolutely tremendous.
And that's why I love Loghain.
Shame I pretty much always kill him at the Landsmeet
