@ Addai: Haha, no need to apologize. Actually, you've piqued my curiosity. So much so, in fact, that I actually kind of want to read the books...dun, dun duuunnn! ;)

You should!  I really like them.  I know people point out the flaws, but to my mind if you focus on the characterization that's where both of them shine.  Plus they add a lot of good background to the game.

I have to thank the thread for introducing me to HBO Rome, I just finished it. Despite over-dramatization and sometimes ahistorical weird bs, I liked it.

And I want a video game character like Octavian Augustus, I love that man. Brilliant leader. Come to think of it Bhelen is not too dissimilar, except Augustus was more subtle.

We love Rome.  When they canceled that, oh the rage, the rage, it was epic!  But HBO is redeeming itself in my eyes by filming Game of Thrones.

Edit:  Oh, and I was definitely dragged kicking and screaming into Loghain fangirliness.  LOL  And... don't hit me.. but if there was a Maric banner I might have to put that one up instead.  :innocent:

LOL No, probably not.  He's always on here talking about how the Theirin dynasty needs to end.  *grumble*

The Therin line is done for, regardless of what one might want. The developers seem to be pointing heavily in that direction. So is the Mac Tir line, though younger and not as "noble.

The legacy of Ferelden's two saviors, at least in terms of progeny, will probably die with the current generation, leaving a major void in Ferelden's political and social arenas.

I would rather not march on orlais, or really fight any publically. I prefer subtle, behind the scenes machinations. Assasins, conspiracies, p;lots, ect. War is boring, messy, and wasteful. Would rather undermine Orlais in many creative, devious ways instead.

I like both. War simply ought to be the coup de grace, the culmination of all the machinations and planing. The killing blow so to speak.

War can be messy or wasteful but far away from boring... hmmm.... perhaps I'm playing too much the total war series.

Anyway you can undermine the enemy's forces by devious ways as much as you want, I'm all for it, but sooner or later you have to make a little war or a uproar even if just for the show, to create your heros and let everyone knows who is the one in charge of the situation, to give the killing blow as KoP said, unless your intention is not overthrowing the enemy.

War is also perfect for added legitimacy, for domestic unity and mass mobilization (German unification needed 3 wars, and Bismarck is as cunning and shrewd as any magnificent bastard), for boosting the economy (making it more dynamic), eliminating internal rivals and dissenters...etc. War has tons of uses and successful ones generally require lots of cunning, political acumen and behind the scene action.

And yes, war is certainly not boring.

Well, part of it might be boring. It does involve a lot of waiting around between battles, after all, and in the past when people had to camp for winter it was a lot of just training and trying to survive for months on end.

Well for the soldiers it can be boring (or much worse), tis true.
Protracted siege can be very boring.

I have always found it boring, at it's heart, it has not varied in the slightest since humans developed it as a pasttime. The novelty of it after some 6000 years of it's more or less continual state, has worn off. I find the idea of completely underming and causing the total collapse of one's enemies without a shot fired through more subtle, cunning means the mark of a truly advanced and cutting edge civilization.

Warfare is too messy, too backwards leaning for my tastes. It also, contrary to some schools of thought, promotes genetic degredation of the spiecies in the long run.

I think warfare, in terms of strategy and tactics, has developed quite a bit in history. And I don't think there has ever been any civilization that can claim it rose to become advanced and dominant without war. In fact, I'd say war is a necessary requirement for the rise of superpowers and major powers.

Though once that position is secured, economic and diplomatic pressures with an overwhelming deterrence capability can act as a substitute for warfare in general. War has its subtleties and requires cunning (knowing when to pull the trigger, usually as the coup de grace).

The technology and tactics of war has developed, in fact, was often the first thing to develop before other things in civilization. The the purpose, spirit, and mentality hasn't, and it ti gets more wasteful as time goes on, both in lives as well as the material products of life and resources needed to sustain it.

Sure, civilizations in the past and present that had major power rose through warfare. It's the grease that oils the wheels of major civilizations throught history. But I'm trying to think outside the box a bit here, and look for newer and more innovative ways to destroy one's enemies without all the clubbing, bombing, stabbing, looting, vandalizing, raping, pillaging, polluting, ect.

Anyone can beat the crap out of one's enemies through warfare, but to do so without fighting is the mark of epic planning.

So something's just occured to me: If Orlais was occupying Ferelden for eighty years and they're so fond of GWs then why didn't they repeal the ban? Why did Maric have to go along and get himself kidnapped? *is totally vaguely related to Loghain*
