Well, awhile back Monica and Knight worked out how Ostagar might have been supposed to work.

Ha ha OMG is she pulling his braids? Someone wrote a fanfic about that, I remember.

Yea, she is, link and link. I think I have read this fanfic too... don't remember the name though.

Speaking of braids.

I just noticed Loghain and Obelix have at least one thing in common.

Speaking of history movies. I just recently finished watching Oglinda ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oglinda ). Despite what is said on the wiki the film is ( mostly ) historical correct with a few mistakes here and there.

I actually cringed several times while watching it. Not because of my sympathy towards Antonescu but rather towards the fact it portrayed the Romanian version of Cailan driving Romania into the ground.

To quote Patrascanu ( a communist even ) about Antonescu's arrest: "Majesty you have demolished us."

Hmm, I wonder who would be our Cailan. Most of our leaders today are Harrowmonts.

The Cailan that immediately pops in my mind is Al Walid II ibn Yazid, who was a chief cause for the collapse of the Umayyad Caliphate.

Oh, did that guy have a grim, scowling second in command that abandoned him in a battle and then proceeded to run the country into the ground?  (Just a joke everyone, try not to get too bent out of shape.)

Kennedy as our Cailan? An "idealist" whos rule ended far earlier then expected, violently, and left a slightly insane man in charge of the country afterwords?

Yes, I believe Loghain was on the grassy knoll, but never came down.

All right, I'll stop.

Hmph. Antonescu was not the brightest of people in my country, but unlike so many of our pathetic leaders before and after him he actually had a spine.

That's something that I quite deeply respect about him, despite his status as a war criminal. Talk about insane old men, but eh...

Well, we had Charles I. He was a bit of an idealist, married a French princess (who was also catholic - which didn't go down well in England) after making a deal with Louis XIII, did rather a lot of contraversial things and got his head cut off for his trouble. After which he was replaced by a commoner (Cromwell), at least for a time.

Looks like a caught a great tread way late. The author makes some good points and gives a lot of background I didn't even know. Personally I killed Loghain. As a military man I just couldn't get past him leaving the troops to get slaughtered as he makes his flanking element turn and go home.

Back to strategy ~

Did anyone ever get the feeling that for a tactical genius, the plan at Ostagar was kind of.... basic/stupid? I mean, I know he wasnt planning on following it, but shouldnt there have been some sort of notice by Duncan or anyone else at the meeting that this does not seem like a strategy that the Hero of River Dane would use to achieve victory?

Indeed, leaving a defensible position to charge a beseiging army which outnumbers you is not exactly the solution laid out in the war college's textbook.

Speaking about strategy gaming. I recently got into Empire Total War at last, and have already pissed every single nation in the game.

Funny how playing Prussia in any historical simulator, you wind up pissing off everyone.  Must be conicidence :innocent:How is that game anyway?  Looked interesting but I spent my money on Victoria II which I am very much regretting.

It's good. Quite very good.

Fun stuff to be able to crush your enemies at every turn but to feel overwhelmed on a grand strategy level. I need to conquer all of Germany and take West Prussia and Warsaw.

That means winning a war against 8 Nations ( Poland-Lithuania, Austria, Hannover, Saxony, Bavaria, Courland and two other minor nations ), though only Poland and Austria are nations with more then one region.

That said even minor nations have strong armies....and Hannover is protected by Great Britain while Poland is allied to Russia and Austria is allied to the Ottomans.

World War right there.

I hated playing any nation that bordered on Russia, or was on the interior of Europe.

Armies just kept coming, and coming, and coming. My army was pretty kick ass though by the time I got to the mid game.

I really hope Shogun 2 can live up to what people are expecting though.

I personally am waiting for Rome 2 and Medieval 3. Not a big fan of the time period of Empire.

I personally ain't a big fan of the Medieval period ( besides studying the Knightly orders ), but Rome 2 would make me quite very happy.

Not to say Empire is bad ( it is the best TW game after Napoleon ). I like that period personally, but studying the ancient Greeks and Romans has always been my favorite.

A guy, Sandor. from Heroes of Might and Magic VI. Leader of the barbarian orcs. I have no idea how a human managed to do that, but we'll see.

Oblivion also assumes humans can mate with orcs. I liked the half-orc in TESIV.

And I like that shot, whoever it is.  Image IPB Sandor is also an ASoIaF character, though not a very nice one.
