I was about to start my reply with a warning like: Expect a lot of Loghain bashing....

But that would be too late, I suppose.

There aren't many characters who inspire such division. To his detractors he is evil incarnate. They tear him to shreds, no matter what. To his supporters he is the misunderstood anti-hero who, scarred by traumata endured during the occupation, made wrong decisions, some of which were the decisions nobody "wants" to make but are sometimes necessary.

I myself prefer the anti-hero interpretation. I take no delight in butchering him in front of his daughter (Some do, it sickens me), I do not think that his hatred of Orlais is unwarranted or overly paranoid, after "The Calling", I also understand his contempt for the Wardens. Do I condone everything he did? No. Do I think his desire to sacrifice his life AND soul to destroy the AD were motivated by wanting to be a hero? No. He only has contempt for hero worship, he'll tell you that more than once. Of course him begging you to allow him to "do one last thing right" can only be a last grab at glory, right? Hello, have you met Loghain? Glory, tales, heroism...he despises all that short lived nonsense.

Playing RTO with him was as engaging as it was illuminating. Nobody shuts Wynne up like him, hah!

Anyway, back to the original poster: Yes, I agree. He has more depth than all the other DAO and DAA characters combined. Flaws and all.

As for those he "calls enemies": He has every right after what happened during the occupation.

thank you for the insight.  I have not yet played Ostagar with him, but I will certainly have to, to see what happens.  ANother way to experience an awesome game.   I dont think much of Loghain myself, because of how easily he can inflict suffering upon others.  But it is not amusing to butcher him in front of his daughter either.  Its sad.  I dont feel like he belongs in the wardens though, so i have yet to spare him.  Gonna do that in my current play through though.

I don't think anything he does is done easily.  In a way I guess it is, because he sees it all as what has to be done and he's not the type to shrink from that.

Edit:  for those reading along, I published chapter 19 of The Arrangement.

A nice happy new year present! I like the idea of Loghain doing horse noises.

*refrains herself from making any comment on riding and... Loghain* lol

Now, completely offtopic, I'm playing Oblivion for the first time, and probably the last since the game makes me dizzy after some time playing it, is there any mod you would recommend me that I should not miss?

Sounds like motion sickness pills would be a better idea than mods......

hmm.. perhaps I should give the pills a try...

Well what I ment is that I'm playing the game only once, so is there any mod that you consider a must have?

Bwahaha, that same part stuck out to me the most, too. I mean, the whole thing is grand, but as I mentioned in her story thread, I think I'd keel over in fits of laughter if somebody would fanart that idea! Image IPB

alschemid - Funny you mention Oblivion - I have started playing it again myself. My last install got unstable and even reinstalling didn't help so I abandonned it (this was after finishing the main quest with one character, and starting on a second - I had been playing for quite a while before I got problems). Anyway, to cut a long story short, I had to get a clean Windows install a few weeks ago so thought, why not try it again. And I'm having a blast. I haven't tried any Oblivion mods, actually. I have the DLCs (I bought the Knights of the Nine retail DVD which has them all on it) but no informal mods. It's such a massive game with so much to do that I'm happy with it as it is.

I suppose some people like mods that improve appearance, and the like, but I'm not too bothered about cosmetic changes.

LOL yes, that metaphor got over-used this time I think.

Oblivion does make me migraine-y.  Low light and shifting landscape, whew.  I also started Bioshock last night and got the same thing.

I don't have a problem with Oblivion but I used to get sick playing Wolfenstein 3D (the original one, back in the early 90s). There was no head-bob so it was just sliding around. They figured out this made people nauseous so head-bob got introduced in Doom and is something we take for granted now, to the extent I don't even notice it any more.

I had it installed for some time but I was unable to play more than half a hour, changed a few settings and now I can play a couple of hours without getting sick, all first person games makes me sick if my character moves too fast...but I am having a lot of fun with Oblivion so far, even playing with knight in full armor who runs sneaking everywhere, should have made a thief. lol
Oh!... should give Bioshock another try too.

Yeah, how well I remember those days. It's one of the things that eventually put me off FPS games. After half a decade playing Wolfenstein  and Duke Nukem, I suddenly discovered that motionsickness is not something i want to experience playing games.

Well if you are not used to it, that can happen in some games.

Happens to my little sister when she tries to play Need for Speed with my dad.

from the camera angle and control in odler, and even newer, FPS type games. It can make one dizzy or prone to mild motionsickness, if one is already inclined towards such things anyway. It's the eye/inner ear becomonign confused by all this bobbing, spinning, and looking about while your body stays motionless and your eye focused on the screen. Really frustrating and annoying.

I don't get motion sick, but migraines from certain games.  Bioshock is the worst I've encountered so far, mainly because of the combination of jerky camera + dark background + bright lights.  Too bad, too, because I thought the story setup was interesting, if utterly depressing.  Oblivion also triggers them sometimes, also because of low light backgrounds mixed with bright effects.  Dragon Age and Mass Effect are much better in comparison.

It's Monday and I'm back at work after vacation.  I need a hug.

I'm not back for another week - one of the nice things about being a teacher.

Nice piccy! We seem to have had a dearth of Loghain piccies lately... (Admittedly I am playing other games currently so no new screenies from me).

The only game that ever made me sick was Shenmue for the Dreamcast. I'm playing Oblivion on the PS3 and feeling OK.  My character has very high Athletics and running has to be done in open areas, not in caves.  I'm usually Sneaking in the dungeons though (she's a Monk), so going very slowly.  I usually play characters who just charge in and bash heads so this is definitely new for me, and kind of awesome.

Apropos of nothing, we finally got a gaming computer kit, it's up and running, and after 38 hours of our pathetic Internet connection I successfully downloaded Mass Effect from Steam.  I am a little intimidated by controlling my character with the keyboard, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.  Looking forward to getting DA:O and downloading some of the Loghain mods!!!!!
