In the purest sense of the word, using it's Latin origins, genocide specifically relates the the widespread, directed killing or annihilation of an ethnic group, though the definition has morphed considerably. Though certainly, the inquisition could fit that definition in alot of areas, since Muslims and Jews, if they did not convert or leave, were murdered or imprisoned.

As far as the UN not aknowledging it as such...meh. It's the UN. Like any useless, ineffective international body, someone has to bring it up, and then they have to spend months or years of useless deliberation to decide if it fits their defitintion, and once they have decided on it.....they will sit around picking their noses and doing nothing. As per their usual standard operating proceedure.

What is interesting is that it led to the first examples of race laws in modern European history, from the whole concept of sangre azul, to various settlement laws in the new world, though many of these laws proved futile and were seldom oberserved.

It is a period of history that has been sadly ignored, yet had many important implications on the progression of Modern European history.

Edit to add: @Costin: You have the actual DA2 game? What do you think of the storyline and characters so far?

I like the story. You ain't some hero on some quest to fight some big bad evil to save the world. You are just an average joe trying to survive.

As for Characters, my party so far ( Aveline, Varric and Bethany ) are well written from my PoV. I ended up placing Aveline as the Captain of the Guard, talk about taking power in the city heh.

@Morwen - I'm sorry you lost your kitty. I love cats so I know what a wrench that is.

@Skadi - I grew up with two white cats (also unrelated). One was big and confident and the other was deaf and had problems balancing, yet it was the latter who used to chase away the local strays. He was quite the scrapper - even had a go at next door's Doberman.

Regarding your other topic....live in London. I could drop dead in my flat and no one would even notice until the smell got intolerable.

@Costin - really? I didn't realise DA2 was out already in the US. I've got it on pre-order (UK) but since I've only just got around to starting Fallout New Vegas, I'm in no hurry for it to arrive.

US generally gets games a few days earlier then EU, it IS bloody annoying. That is besides the usual problems Dragon Age Origins had and have been carried over.

For instance, this is my Hawke.

That's actually the way it was back home in Seattle as well. Beyond the occasional Jehovah's witness or Mormon knocking on my door Saturday morning because they didn't know any better, my hermit's life remained unviolated. No friends or aquaintances knocking on my door or calling me on the phone to see if I was alive, unless I had something specific they wanted and thought they could get. Which was rarely the case. It's one of the only things I prefer about living in a large city or metro area.

Though for older folks from certain London neighborhoods, like my husband, the opposite tends to be true, and everyone seems to know everyone and pester them accordingly.

Your cat, like my Missy, is a fine example of how well animals overcome various physical handicaps and adapt accordingly. Artemis, though not handicapped, is smaller than most other cats, but makes up for it because she is pure, compact muscle and claws. When she walks, it is like watching a tiny leopard or panther, he muscles ripple under her fur. Which is probably why even dominant tom cats around here usually give her a wide berth. What she lacks in size, she makes up for in physical power and sheer ruthlessness. She needs only get a whiff of another cat, and she's hissing, spitting, and screeching loudly, claws ready to tear it to pieces.

@Costin: from the screenshot, the graphics do not look that different from DAO. How is the new conversational system working out?

@ Skadi
Agreed, and I do not expect the UN to do anything. Just academically speaking, I've never read a scholar who referred to it as a genocide, despite it being a valid argument. Oh well.

@ Costin
Already you're taking over the city? lol
Are there are problems with import?

That is on MEDIUM setting though :) My GFX card can't handle high or very high.

As for the conversation wheel, it's working well enough. Dialogues have more meat to them then in Mass Effect 2.

Already you're taking over the city? lol

Come now Knight, would you expect anything different from me? :)

I have laid the foundations of my plans. I am working with Varric to secure a partenership with his very wealthy merchant House. I have a dearest and loyal friend of mine in charge of the city guard.

That only leaves political side as I already have a majority of the military ( which is the city guard ) , which frankly will be the hardest and most challenging of all. If I can't secure political power then I won't be able to take over.

But I do intend to be become ruler of Kirkwall, even if from the shadows.

Heh Skadi - that's true about older London neighbourhoods. When I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, everyone in the road knew each other. Most people lived in houses, which were sometimes divided into two flats but most were in tact, and I think this made a huge difference.
These days almost all decent-sized houses have been carved up into flats. The house I've been in for the past 15 years is a prime example - I live in one of five flats, mine being the smallest (a studio). I am the only owner who lives there - the other owners rent theirs out so the tenants keep changing and just as I get to nodding terms with one set of tenants, they're off, and new people come in.

@Costin - yes, I'm aware US releases usually happen first (due to localisation, distribution and so on - I worked in the games industry for, hmm, 17 years, or thereabouts). I just hadn't been following DA2's development that closely so its release has sneaked up on me, rather. But if you're liking it so far that's a good sign.

That's what my husband was saying. He was born and raised in Tottenham, during and after WW2, and his descriptions of life there sounded alot like my grandma's descriptions of her birth and childhood in West Chicago in the 20's, which was mostly immigrant communities that tended to stick together. He still messages and chats with childhood neighbors he hasn't seen in 50 years. Though from what he and others have said. Tottenham is very different now, and seems to be considered a no-go area by alot of people, Like Compton in LA or South Bronx in new York. Though even when we lived in Bournemouth in an ex-council house, they neighbors were still pretty nosy and intrusive, though generally friendly and well meaning. Though sometimes, nosy neighbors are beneficial in certain situations, such as noting unusual or suspect activity around one's house when you're out.

I haven't been following the DA2 forums either, and will probably ignore them, since they haven't really held anything of interest or value to me. I'm waiting until some people have played it, to give their general, non-spoilerific opinions about the overall game to learn what to expect.

@Costin, the armor that your Hawke is weaping looks better than alot of the DA vanilla armor's, so even on medium, it's an improvement.

There's bits of London that aren't nice - there's a lot of gang problems and there's not a day goes by when you don't read about some teenager getting stabbed to death or shot (even though guns are illegal here). They generally stick to killing each other, though. But Britain is getting more like America in that respect, sadly.

My other half had to move up to Manchester a few years ago for work and was surprised when a neighbour came to welcome him to the area. Up north people are generally a lot friendlier. In London, people very rarely make eye-contact on public transport and anyone who starts chatting to you is treated with suspicion. Still, under some circumstances people still pull together, such as during the 7/7 bombings. I guess we do still have a bit of the Blitz spirit about us.

Re: DA2, I'm looking forward to seeing how well my PC handles it. When I installed FNV, it immediately set the graphics to maximum. Not bad for a 2 year old PC which wasn't even cutting edge when I bought it.

No, I just didn't expect the game to let you that early lol.
Good, I am looking forward to playing it.

And I just got it and installing. But I still have to complete my Awakening run.

So is it really worlds better then Origins Costin?

Every review I have seen has said that DA2 is a vast improvement over Origins in every regard.

It is by far better then origins yes giggles, except in how deep companions are ( not saying DA2 is weaker there, but equal if not better in regards to some of them ).

Some companions lack the depth of Origins, while others are just as good basically.

Guess that is to be expected.

I dont know why so many reviewers have said that Bethany is a shallow charachter.

I am interested in seeing how Bioware writes having a sibling in a game.

I make my own opinion of a game after I have played it.

I am cautious about how many reviews have said that it lacks depth in some areas, and some NPCs are not that interesting.

Then again some people say that about Loghain though.

Doing Witch Hunt now. I think DA2 will be good. Question is will it be better than Origins. We'll see.

And in honor of Gabriel Angelos, I decided to name my first Hawke Gabriel. Plus it sounds mage like.

I am naming my first Hawke after myself.

I am naming my second Hawke: Arthur Currie.
Mostly to see if I can really think like a general.

I cant wait to write my paper on him next semester.

Just did my Witch Hunt run with my Dalish (who Spared Loghain) about 2 hours ago then napped. Now I'm just waiting for my damn DA2 to show up. I don't think my DA2 first run is going to be an import though... I don't like the sound of this perpetual import choices deterioration bug I been hearing about. PATCH!
