If Alistair renounces the throne for himself and his heirs before the Landsmeet, is it binding that a Theirin can never take the throne after that? Also, would that oath cover any unknown Theirins out there, or just Alistair's heirs?

I assume a Landsmeet could overturn such an oath. Alistair and his heirs, I assume that is any children he has. He can't take an oath on behalf of all Theirins everywhere.

Without divulging spoilers, has anyone gotten far enough through Skyrim to give an informed rating? After DA:2 I'm not just gonna buy a game before I hear otherwise.

@ Joy - Judging from the overwhelming silence of the forum since yesterday, I'd say you have your answer!  :D Must be pretty good.

EDIT: i meant to imply that it *is* good, since everyone seems to be off playing it nonstop!Posted Image  Just realized i might look sarcastic, which wasn't my intent.

Most video game magazines have given it at about average a rating of 9.5 out of 10. I fully expect it will win Game of the Year. If you're waiting for someone to make a review after getting halfway through the game, though, it might be a while. You can easily put 300 hours in this game, if it's anything like Oblivion. You should like it if you liked Oblivion.

A long new chapter of "The Edge Of The Grey Enigma" may be read here: http://www.fanfictio...The_Grey_Enigma

More sadness, more angst and some unexpected levity. Enjoy!

Funnily enough I'm quiet because I've been playing Deus Ex (1 and 2) and am now immersed in Alpha Protocol. I'll get to DX:HR after that. By the time I'm done with those, Skyrim should be a) cheaper and B) patched. I've never known Bethesda release a game that didn't need at least one patch, after all. But yeah, I want to play.

The game is massive.  It might be a while before you'd get a review you consider informed.  I can say, however, after sinking the entire weekend into it- it is an amazing game.  I haven't even scratched the surface and I consider it worth every penny.  The environments alone are incredible.

I am back from Boston and Harvard. My first time in the USA. Twas pretty nice.

So how is Skyrim so far in terms of story? I am not a huge fan of open ended games, unless they allow me to assume a real leadership role, a la Mount & Blade.

Awesome.

As for leadership.....eh don't think so but there is a lot of good politics and two factions fighting each other for GOOD reasons. One wants to preserve the stability and military strength of the Empire the other wants to break Skyrim away due to religious oppression.

However there's a third factor with that. The Empire got it's ass kicked in a war with the Aldemari Dominion ( High Elves ) and they surrendered...and on the terms of the surrender worship of the first Emperor was outlawed. So on one hand you have the Empire playing ball by the terms the elves dictate ( though they only started cracking down AFTER the Rebelion began ) and the other you have a bunch of idiotic nobles who think they can beat back the Elves AFTER a long and bloody civil war.

My take? LONG LIVE THE EMPEROR! But someone please slap him to strengthen the military and smash the elves.

Another game where two factions fighting each other is much better done then ****ing retarded Gaider did it. Screw the Witcher games. Fallout 1, 2, 3, New Vegas, Kotor 2 Onderon did it very damned well.

But that's not the main story...it's an important one sure, but the main is this: www.youtube.com/watch

Killing Dragons.

Can we at least become the emperor's general or something and help him reform the military?

I am tired of playing the one man army hero who just wanders around and does not actively and pro-actively participate in the really interesting stuff (Geralt is like that too).

I am not far in at all, just scratched the surface, but my initial impression is that the writing is pretty good and more sophisticated and serious than Oblivion. One thing that is making me very happy, they really nailed the Norse theme from what I can see. Things like atmosphere and little details, but also mentality.

Finally a game where FORTS and Castles have REAL dimensions.

Pretty much how I feel about the whole Legion / Stormcloak mess, though I'm curious. Can you be anti-Thalmor if you're with the Legion? I want to side with the Legion and help them cull the Stormcloaks, I don't see seperation from the Empire as being great in the long term but I don't want to join with them and find myself forced to be "yay Thalmor".

Cool. Skyrim may well end up being my Christmas present to myself. Looks nice.

Costin/KoP - interested to know how you see the Oblivion main character in that respect. He (or she) got involved but ultimately acted more as an enabler for Martin to do his heroic thing. I liked that, actually - that you did a lot of important (and possibly heroic) stuff but you weren't the one who ultimately saved the world. Made a nice change.

LOL  Well the relief stems partly from the fact that apart from The 13th Warrior and a dubbed Norwegian filming of Kristin Lavransdatter, any Norse or Germanic portrayals I've seen have been terribad.  And then there are the pages and pages of anime perversions you get when you GIS anything related to Norse mythology.  So, coming across some of this stuff makes me weep with joy.

I wouldn't say that - the main plot is there, it's just that it's a much looser framework that allows you the freedom to go off and do other things.

So....other than the joke spike made, what else is new?

@ CalJones
I don't mind playing enablers, as long as they are actually doing something other than killing or basic things. I would not mind playing a Loghain type figure, who was an enabler for Maric. I'd love to play an Agrippa to an Augustus.

Essentially, people who have big responsibilities and leadership qualities, are or can be pro-active in some ways, and have to resort to their brains and not just mass slaughter people.

Once upon a time, when I cared, I envisioned the Warden being an enabler to Morrigan or the OGB. But that won't happen.

It seems that BioWare has issued a general invitation to BSN members to help them try to crash their servers as a SWTOR Beta tester. Anyone here planning on joining in?

On a side note, SWTOR is scheduled for release on 12/20. And they're still beta testing now? I don't know what the normal timeline is for major game releases, but that seems like cutting it a little close IMO.

They've been beta testing for quite a long time now actually. This most recent big beta test coming up next weekend is to really stress test their servers.

I'm going to give it a try as I'm curious to see how it plays. Even if I have no intention to end up buying it cause the whole "pay $60 for the box for one month then $15 a month to keep playing" model is completely unappealing.

But I'm mostly going to try it to hear if Claudia Black is actually voicing the female Sith warrior PC.:wizard:

Yeah, I know they've been in beta for a while, but still testing this close to release date is somewhat risky, isn't it? I mean, when you're in beta, you expect any big kinks or bugs to have already been worked out, but what if someone finds one?

If I join, I'm definitely going with the Empire. I like the look of the Inquisitor class a lot.
