I guess this revelation doesn't come as a surprise to some, but I'm sure it's a helluva shock to most everyone else. I always thought it was kind of odd that Loghain would jump to such a conclusion given the lack of hard evidence that Cailan was going to dump Anora. I think this is what makes the game so intriguing and polarizing - people interpret the same things differently.
Loghain is no politician, it's true, but he has spent most of his life in political circles. I'm sure he knew that Cailan was in contact with Orlais, even if he didn't realize fully what Cailan was planning. There is rarely "hard evidence" when it comes to political conspiring. It's all about connecting the dots.
I also think this is why things were muddled in my head about Eamon urging Cailan to dump Anora, my mind just made the leap to Celene even though he didn't suggest it. It seems that was all Cailan's brilliance.
Yeah, I don't think Eamon realized that if Cailan was unmarried that he would seriously consider a marriage to Celene.
I also wondered why Cailan would have asked (his name escapes me at the moment) the member of his vanguard to give the key to Duncan or the Grey Wardens. Why get it to Anora? My mind now makes a leap to the GWs possibly knowing about the burgeoning relationship between Celene and Cailan... Would it benefit the GWs for this union to happen? Yes, I know - my mind is a runaway train.
I imagine that few outside of Celene's closest circle, and Cailan knew about this. If Celene was successful in marrying Cailan, there would be no need for an invasion, and no reason for the Wardens to be involved. Edit: Though now that I've looked ahead and seen KoP's post, I agree that there is a potential that the Wardens were attempting to expand their political power.... so really, on a different subject, I think when I mentioned that Loghain may have thought that the Wardens wanted glory as much as Cailan did, that's really not that far-fetched...
I've once again realized that Loghain's so-called paranoia once again has a good foundation. His instincts are pretty damn good. I'm not saying he's perfect by any means but the man did not raise to his rank by luck.
Exactly. I think it was Monica who was saying (and forgive me if I'm wrong) that it was a shame that so often in the books, his instincts were usually correct, but then in the game his instincts can't keep things together. It's frustrating.
