I like the longer stories. They give you more time to see a character developed or to have a more complicated plot. But you're right, waiting for updates...That's why I rarely start a story that only has one chapter up (though if I already read that author I will and will have to trust them to update).phaonica wrote...

It's not that long, really. Only about 60K.
Edit: Of course, it does have a sequel that's currently half that.
Heh, it's true, it's definitely shorter than some fics. I rarely can stick with a fic that is that long or longer, especially if they are yet unfinished.

No, he's not, because in my personalized version of the game he doesn't go to Orlais. Yay?
Now I am going to purposely mistreat Anora, just to bring him back.

Sure, you might get made fun of, but Loghain can appreciate the cuteness of a unicorn. Not to mention he just disembowels people who make fun of his tattoo.

Cartography isn't finished, but the author updates pretty regularly. It's a very good fic (but long), and mostly because I like the Loghain characterization. She does a brilliant job with him. The romance part is a slow burn and it's the only way I can see something like that playing out. Plus, he sort of carries on short arguments with Maric in his head.phaonica wrote...

[Hear, hear. Whatever I might think of Cailan, I would think less of myself if I chose the "leave him to the Darkspawn" or "throw him to the wolves" options. And yet so far my characters have all been commoners, and they would have given a pyre to anyone stuck up there. I resent the fact that I was forced to break character and infer that Cailan's merit of a pyre had to do with his rank or family name, not just because he was a person and I'm a decent person and it's the decent thing to do.
I don't like to break character to harden Alistair, either, but I do it anyway (when appropriate to the playthrough). The dialog choices are unfortunate, but the results, I feel are worth breaking character for. Anytime you think to yourself, "My character wouldn't say any of these things..." you somewhat break character and pick something anyway... so in my view I've broken character for far less reasons. In my opinion, if the decent thing to do is to give him a pyre, regardless of the dialog choice that gets you there, then the decent thing to do is also to break character. Again, just my opinion.
It's my opinion as well, which is why I grit my teeth and break character. I have no choice, because it would be an even bigger break from character to pick one of the other two options. I'm just annoyed that I have to do it in order to get the result that I want. I feel like I try really hard to stay in character and make their decisions from their perspective, and then you have these little moments where you're yanked out of RP and have to make decisions like the Puppet Master instead.

I remember looking up Cartography when it was mentioned before. And I do remember thinking "too long, some other time, maybe." The promise of a romance payoff goes a long way towards helping hold my interest, given something that long. I often read Loghain fics when I'm feeling the need to research player interpretations of Loghain from various points of view. That sounds like an excuse, but it really works!

I do agree that Loghain is the richest villain I have seen in a very long time, and possibly the best one in CRPG's as a whole. The writing for after the Landsmeet is superb, and was persuasive enough to alter my gameplan in that campaign; no trivial task.

And I sure as sh!t want to read the fic that inspired that picture I posted way back (a few days ago) with Loghain pillowbiting! But that one is long and unfinished, too, so I guess I'll just have to wait.
