Yes, I suppose I'm looking at it from my own viewpoint, since I tend to think that's what happens to us anyway. (I would like to believe there's some sort of nice afterlife, but I honestly don't think there is).
Understood. I view differently, but I by no means feel I have the right answers. Nobody does and everyone who has died before can’t exactly come back and tell us what happens, so it’s one final journey, for sure… the destination remains forever a mystery. Comes down to what each of us, as an individual, believes. And what one can cope with. Even with my faith, I’ve had terrifying thoughts lying in bed at night thinking, ‘What if it really just ends? You’re just suddenly gone?’ And I’ve determined that I just can’t go through life dwelling on the ‘what ifs’ because I’ll just lose my mind and be useless to everyone. So, I push forward with my glass half-full and hope for the best, eh?
And then there's the whole soul obliteration thing - it's really only a theory. The only people who would know for certain are the four wardens who ended the previous blights, and it's not exactly possible to ask them.
Very good point.
Either way, Loghain's there when Riordan explains what happens, and he still wants to do it. Who am I to stand in the way of his redemption?
Also understood. I’ll totally admit that I usually go the DR route for incredibly selfish reasons – I don’t necessarily want to die (but will if necessary), but more importantly, I don’t want to tell anyone else to go off and die in my place (or in this case, let someone willingly go off and die in my place). Being a commander, for all intents and purposes, if I’m given an option to win the war without 100% having to sacrifice one of my men, I’ll take the “Get Out of Jail Free” card. Because I’d much prefer to either do the deed myself and spare them or take the DR and spare us all. It also depends on how much one trusts Morrigan, too, obviously. If you fear she’s being totally selfish and is going to raise demon seed that will haunt the future world, I totally understand telling her to buzz off. However, most of my Wardens end up trusting her over the course of the game and, therefore, trust that what she offers isn’t going to doom humanity or sell your soul to the devil, so to speak.
But that’s all entirely personal and subjective. And based on my “canon” Warden simply being tired of death by the end of the game and always having to decide who gets to live and who gets to die in some scenarios. If she can finally choose an option where she doesn’t have to condemn someone to death (yes, still a risk of that happening in battle anyway, but no DR = 100% guarantee someone’s gonna die), she’s taking it, for better or worse.
I have a male Cousland I’m RPing right now and he’s going to let Loghain redeem himself in that manner. But that’ll probably be my only Warden to do so, honestly.
What would’ve been interesting is a scenario where Riordan doesn’t go all Leeroy Jenkins on the Archdemon and end up getting himself killed. I would’ve LOVED to have seen the fallout/his reaction had he, my Warden, and Alistair/Loghain all survived the Archdemon’s death despite one of us obviously killing it. Hmmm…
