I think it's a good thing Anora takes after her mother.   :)

Imagine that big Loghain nose on her!   Or the whole brooding dark haired look to go with the rest of her temperment.
I think she got the best from both parents.

Here is a question for all the Loghain fans/non fans who like to razz us.

What is the ONE single greatest factor that leads you to spare Loghain?
For me it is what Riordian says and the line "There are compelling reasons". He should have every reason to want him dead yet dosent.

For my friend it is this quote from Gandalf which led him to spare Loghain:

Gandalf: "Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo?
Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise can not see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or evil before this is over.
The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many." <- This last line really touched him.
Gandalf's words of wisdom.

Sometimes I wish we could get Gandalf over Wynne in Origins.

I only spare him on my HNF run (my other characters, elves and mage, aren't likely to know much about his past and thus don't really care). The main reason for her to spare him is that once she sees him defeated, yielding and accepting his fate, she remembers the great hero he once was. She's a redeemer and believes he deserves a second chance.

Truth to be told, she doesn't really care much for what Riordan says (she respects his advice, but it's not a deciding factor).

One thing I don't get is why the whole time leading up to the Landsmeet he considers you to be a foreigner even though you're a native Fereldan.

According to Loghain, Wardens are all Orlesian spies, remember?

But yes, that drove me CRAZY on my first playthrough, which was as a Cousland - I kept looking for the "I'm not a f***ing Orlesian, d*mmit!" dialogue option.

Because I believe great leaders are the ones who are able to turn enemies into allies when possible.

Just one?

Tough choice.

This:
If one man in all the world can be found, now or forever, to know that
you did wrong, that man will have either to conquer the world as I have,
or be crucified by it. [The uproar in the streets again reaches them].
Do you hear? These knockers at your gate are also believers in
vengeance and in stabbing. You have slain their leader: it is right that
they shall slay you. If you doubt it, ask your four counsellors here.
And then in the name of that right [he emphasizes the word with great scorn]
shall I not slay them for murdering their Queen, and be slain in my
turn by their countrymen as the invader of their fatherland? Can Rome do
less then than slay these slayers, too, to shew the world how Rome
avenges her sons and her honor. And so, to the end of history, murder
shall breed murder, always in the name of right and honor and peace,
until the gods are tired of blood and create a race that can understand. (Caesar, G. B. Shaw, Caesar and Cleopatra)

And he even acknowledges that at Ostagar, only adding to the headscratching

It's really game mechanics.  Mainly wanting to explore other areas of the game that I had not done so before.

What Riodan says though is thee big role playing reason.    But there are others.   Like by this time, a male noble may see he's paid his dues and deserves the Prince Consort title.  So I think secretly attempting to spare him as an engagement present makes another good supporting reason.

That is kind of amusing when you think about it. Anora gives you Gwaren and you...don't violently kill her father. Posted Image

It took awhile for me to come around to the Loghain love. The first time I played I wanted to spare him for practicality's sake but didn't want to lose Alistair. I mean, he is the only companion who's been with you since almost the beginning. Then I received a stern talking to from KoP and realized that Loghain wasn't all that bad, read TST, realized he's kind of likeable, and then quit playing for six months.  When I reinstalled I'd lost my canon Warden (hard drive went kablooey) so I replayed her, felt terrible about killing him, and now I have a new canon Warden with Loghain spared and Alistair and Anora married.

The one thing that I think of when I think of Ostagar is this: "If then that friend demand why Brutus rose against Caesar, this is my answer: not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more."

I am not nearly so eloquent as some, and I don't have any quotes or anything. The one single greatest factor, hm. The main thing that comes to mind is giving a second chance to someone who had done so much for Ferelden in the past, and who seemed to strongly care about the country.

I love that moment, when Loghain tells the Warden he has come to respect him/her. It feels so honest and so... Loghain. He's basking in the irony of it all, but he truly means it.

As is probably known by and by, I don't.

The reasons I can't are the image in my mind of the soldier at Ostagar pushing his fellow soldier forward- "your kith stood their ground while others fled, no one can do more"; those men faced the horde and stood.  He turned his back on them and didn't even engage.  Mostly it's the elf in the alienage describing the slavers dragging people out of their beds and parading them through their home to meet Caladrius- "Maker, the little ones crying."  The fact that he tries to justify the latter infuriates me and negates any good I might have thought about him.  Same deal with him approving after the fact of the Cousland massacre.

In order to spare him, I'd have to believe that he's suddenly turned from all that on a dime and become a meek Grey Warden, and I just don't believe it.  To me, my Warden would have to be a blind fool to do so, and I would end up hating my character.  I put too much into a playthrough to do that.

I think the naked pics scared all the men out of the thread.

Re: choices, then it's along the lines of Phaonica's reasoning. If my warden(s) had any doubt, at that point, Cauthrien's plea reinforces their decision. (And of course, my Cousland fellow wants to make his new fiancee happy, as well).

Re: The Witcher - it's a good (but long) game, with a lot of moral choices. But actually, I found most of the moral choices quite straightforward. The game, as a whole, is darker than DA:O but (to me, at least) the choices seem more black and white.

Like Costin I played only twice. I never could bring myself to side with the Scoia'tel, though - for the same reasons he disliked siding with them - I can't tolerate terrorism. I sided with the Order once and stayed neutral once.

Looking forward to the sequel.

I admit that the elf slavery issue does make me think twice on the run where I spare him. He really doesn't show any regret about it.

And uh.... do you want another naked Loggy pic? :wizard:

I'm currently playing The Witcher... well, I will be again once I can get Steam to cooperate... but it's really reading the book that's gotten me interested in the character. The translation is a little awkward at times, but so far I'm hooked.

LOL  It seems to stop fights on the Alistair thread so I thought it might work here.  :)  Not that I'm trying to dictate discussion.  It was just becoming more of an Alistair hate thread, and this strange phenomenon of Loghain squee is far more intteresting to observe.  I admit I'm morbidly fascinated with you guys.  LOL

Was there a fight going on? I thought it was a reasonably respectful debate (as far as these things go). The board is more interesting when there is a discussion going on.

Well, if you want any explanation, it'll have to come in form of an unintended Alistair vs. Loghain answer. ;)

Agreed. Even if I don't have anything to add, I enjoy reading various sides to the discussion.
