It's hard to hate Alistair. I think he's like Maric in that sense. To quote TST in Fifteen Minutes, it's like trying to hate a puppy. Yeah, he growls at you in the end, but maybe he's just teething.
A good analogy.
Of course, I happen to be in the rare camp of dual Alistair/Loghain luv. But I am demented enough that as such, I can do so without worrying about warping or mutating the Space/Time continum.
It's odd, but I find myself in your camp too. It has a lot to do with how I RP my characters, though. Currently I have 2 games going --one in which my CE has fallen for Alistair and will probably wind up executing Loghain herself, and another in which my Mage thinks Alistair talks too much and doesn't have a spine (exhibit A: his "Welp, looks like Connor's an abomination, only one thing to do" speech in Redcliffe and then his "YOU KILLED A CHILD! HOW COULD YOU!?! WHATEVER WILL THE ARL SAY?!? OH, CRUELTY!!!!" rant in camp afterwards

). This Mage will wind up recruiting Loghain and I have to say, I can't wait. I've actually suspended my CE playthrough, which I started way earlier than this one, in order to get to the Loghain part faster.
Outside of RP, I'm always drawn to the darker, more complex characters anyway, so my natural inclination would be towards Loghain. (Which, by the way, the title of this thread is key: It doesn't say "best", "most likeable", "winningest" or anything else; just "deepest", which IMO is indisputable whether you like the guy or not.) Then again, Alistair does make me laugh and I find his naivete charming more often than I find it annoying, which is a neat trick for him because that's not usually the way it works for me. But as to whom I'd want to spend a long campaign with --well, both, really, but since Alistair won't let that happen then I guess it's his loss. Even with both men in camp I'd probably spend more time hanging around Loghain. What was that dialogue from Pulp Fiction about being able to share a comfortable silence? Yeah. I need that in a relationship --any type of relationship. Somehow I see that happening way more with Loghain than Alistair.
