Is DAO a bit too mage-centric?

Let me preface this by saying that in nearly every RPG I always roll a mage. I almost never, ever roll any other class if the choice is presented to me as I just love blasting things with bright shiny magic.

For that reason, I actually enjoy how very mage-centeric DOA is. Not only do mages fulfill most of the group's requirements (except for tanking... though later on maybe Arcane Warriors can do that), but the a good deal of the storyline's major elements revolves so much around mages, with both the Chantry and the Fade having particular significance for mages.

However, does anyone feel that other classes are then a bit marginalized, both in terms of rolls in combat as well as in terms of the story? A single mage just seems to bring so much more to the table than any other class, and rogues especially often almost like a liability rather than an asset given their in ability to truly tank. Yes, they do decent DPS, but so do mages who also bring so much more as well as the abliity to do good DPS from range: archery weapons are just too weak in this game, and rogue ranged abilities don't make up for weakness of bows or crossbows.

I know that class balance is not so much of a concern in a single player game. You don't have to tell me that. Still, people feel a certain affinity for certain archetypes. I'm sure that if I weren't a mage lover, and especially if I were a rogue lover, I would be more than a little disappointed.

Well... I would like to hear some more detailed perspectives, especially from people who usually prefer to roll rogues in RPGs.

The top talents in the archery trees are really powerful, actually. As for basic ranged effectiveness, Georg is working on it.

But yes, mages rule. Except robes are fashion disasters and massive armor looks AWESOME.

Yea. The mage class does seem a little too powerful. Sort of reminds me of old D&D games, where spellcasters were always the most powerful characters.

That being said, I play a rogue as my main character, and I am loving him.

For combat, maybe a little, but its not too bad.

In terms of story, not at all. You seem to forget that Mage is also an origin story, and thats the only one you can play as a mage. Rogues and warriors have access to 5 different origins.

Of course mages are the strongest. They have been the strongest in BG2, KOTOR, NWN, and Jade Empire. That's why I play them. :)

I'm loving my rogue. If I feel magic envy, I can just control Morrigan for awhile.

Regardless, I feel that both Warrior and Rogue are done really well compared to most other games. Warrior is actually interesting to play.

Yes, mages fill the roles that many RPGs break into 3 or 4 different classes -- ranged dps, healing/buffing, crowd control, summoning/drains/debuffs. And, since they can take a bit of each or be a tank-mage with AW/BM, you have a magic-user/cleric/druid/necromancer/fighter all rolled into one class. :)

I played a rogue right out of the gate and she is very powerful. My defense is sick, I can stand in against yellows and bosses and not get hit that much and have pretty good DPS. I also have stun-lock which is very nice. One on one, I can defeat most mages (stealth, stunlock), but if the mage gets the jump on me, it's over. I'm going to play a warrior next, because I fear if I play a mage, I won't want to go back!

I love my mage, for sure. However, I found myself being Leliana quite a bit more after the initial start of battle. So I made a rogue and I love it, hah. Nevertheless, yeah mages are awesome.

Mages are powerful in many fantasy stories. And why not? They can control nature, that's pretty bad ass. In return, they are either rare or feared. In this case both, and even locked up in a tower and controlled by the templars.

I liky me Dalish Duelist/Assassin. At lvl 14 now, he's doing just fine. Got the 5th skill in dual wield, so I can use a regular one-hander in my off-hand, which increased my DPS.

I guess I could toss a lot of anti-threat gear on him, but currently got fire resistance, which seems to work great against abominations, demons and dragons, and since that's the mobs I fight the most right now, I'll stick it with this. This means I sometimes get aggro off from Shale and Alistair, but it's no problem.

During one of the more "dreamy" missions in the Circle Tower, I liked the Arcane Warrior-type I came out to be, with the burning man, and might roll that for my next play through. But I really like my rogue.

I might pick up the ranger specialization, so I can summon pets. Haven't put much use to archery, since Morrigan was doing all the ranged attacks. Heard it was useless, but then again, it usually is. In most RPG's, archery is only good until the enemy gets up close and personal. It's more a way of knocking a few hit points off an enemy, before it gets close enough. The only use in larger battles, is to interrupt mages, while Shale and Alistair/Wardog squishes the remaining enemies.

Edit: Oh yeah, what I like about this game (and KoTOR), is that no matter what you roll, you can always have a little taste of what it's like to be another class. Just set up the proper tactics and take control of one of your other characters. Now, I do play rogue, but I could see why it would be a clever move to control this character during battle, as it's a good idea to get behind enemies and backstab them.

Well, this is a party RPG so it really does not matter that much which class you choose for your player character. Just pick a few companions to compliment your own class and enjoy the game. I am running with Alistair, Shale and Morrigan, myself as an Assassin and it is simply awesome. Rogues are not a liability though, if you think so you are definately doing it wrong.

However, does anyone feel that other classes are then a bit
marginalized, both in terms of rolls in combat as well as in terms of
the story? A single mage just seems to bring so much more to the table
than any other class, and rogues especially often almost like a
liability rather than an asset given their in ability to truly tank.

Mages are incredibly handy for healing and aoe but aside from that they really dont offer so much. They cant tank damage, they cant drop threat like a rogue can when "attempting" to tank, they have worse sustained DPS than dps warriors and rogues in long fights, bosses especially.
And they certainly cannot open locked chests, disarm traps and sneak up to the enemy of choice to bring him down and vanish afterwards. They are probaly the strongest class in short fights especially against a great number of enemies but one mage should be enough for that and the game offers an outstanding mage for the task.

Also there seems to be very limited amount of armor for mage classes, I enjoy wearing the stuff I find with my PC a lot and it would probably frustrate me not being able to upgrade my equipment while melee classes have full bags of alternate equipment and weapons.

I am really happy with the rogues in this game, especially because the best companions (IMO) perfectly compliment my class choice. I dont want to go anywhere without Alistar Morrigan and Shale.

addiction21 hit the nail on the head. Besides, there's so much more to this game besides battles, I don't think it really matters all that much. I can't imagine beating the game without the rest of my party, even though my mage is the primary damage dealer, healer and debuffer/stunner. I don't think the mage is ridiculously overpowered, even if s/he is extremely useful, even crucial. I'd say the battles are ridiculously hard without a tank or two, just as they're ridiculously hard without a mage or two, yet nobody's complaining about tanks being OP.

My warrior is Champion/Templar just for annoying mages. I don't find them very difficult when I can wipe out their enchantments.

Mages are overpowered as it is. Heals, buffs, debuffs, and nukes altogether. I think there should be a fourth class like a cleric for heals and buffs. That would make for a more balanced game.

Somebody please elaborate: how, exactly, does the mage class break the balance in the game?

So basically with a party of 4 mages the game would be easier than with 2 warriors and 2 mages or 2 warriors, a rogue and a mage?

I believe the folks at Bioware explained in an interview that the mages in DA were supposed to be a bit more rare and thus also far more powerful than in most RPG settings or at least just DnD. So there's a non-metagame reason for this.

I'll do it with 3 mages, all with a hand behind their back, without mana/health pots, on nightmare, while posting, without any waffles for breakfast.
