Is DAO a bit too mage-centric?

An Arcane Warrior outfights a Warrior if built right. You basically have an indestructible battle cleric.

Mages are indeed very powerful. Then again some of the fights you actually need that power or you'll be screwed. Thinking about it if I tryed taking on some of the battles without a mage I'd definatly die, no matter what. So the game was obviously designed with the power of a mage in mind.

I don't think the other classes are useless. I mean in BG2 spellcasters were the most powerful but other classes were still useful. I know without my tanks to knock enemies back and such my mages would get swarmed and hacked to bits eventually. Sometimes you just don't get that chance to plan ahead to make use of some of the best crowd control abilities.

You could probably cheese your way through the game by using a 3 mage party but saying that you could also cheese your way through with 3 archers and a warrior. Just aggro all the mobs with your warrior then run about in circles while the archers kill off all the mobs. The thing is you don't have to play like that to be able to win, you don't NEED to exploit how effective mages can be to pull off most victorys.

Mages are always overpowered :) Time Stop in BG2: Throne of Bhaal being my best example :P

Shhh, too many of these "mages are overpowered" threads.  The devs might nerf them next patch.

Devs, no one is complaining here :P

There's a ridiculous difference between running a group of say two melee classes, an archer, and a mage, or three mages (morrigan/wynne/player) and a tank. I think the three mage group could steamroll nightmare difficulty, but I haven't had time to try it yet. Mages are obscene in DAO.

The only thing so far that I find really unbalanced is the cone of cold spell. It freezes (small) groups of enemies as well as the toughest enemies, makes them vulnerable to instant death through shatter and has a ridiculously small cooldown time.

Why wouldn't a mage be ridiculously powerful? They control the elements, can heal grievous wounds, can immobilize targets. That's a hell of an offset for any sort of squishiness.

brgillespie: The difference is that, traditionally, you control the overpowered nature of mages by greatly limiting how often they can cast their spells, either through some sort of memorization mechanic or by making mana much harder to come by.

DAO preserves the power of magic while eliminating the only check on it.

Well well, have one or two mages in this game is a must, but having a tank to receive enemy´s blows and a rogue to open locks, disable traps, steal and scout is also necessary. its party-oriented gamed: The whole is more than the sum of their parts ;)

The only disadvantage mages have is that they require much more micro management than the other classes.

I When I start the fight I can put my Rogue behind an enemy, click to attack and switch to my mage confident that which ever enemy my rogue is attacking will be dead in about 5 seconds. With a Warrior there is even less micro since I just click and walk away.

Even with Tactics I have to kinda babysit my mages in battle since everything they do is a separate skill. I also have to be careful with aggro, friendly fire and resists. Those are things almost no fighter or rogue needs to think about.

One of my favorite strategies is to send in Shale, let him group up all the bad guys. Then cast shield on him so he's immune to damage, and then nuke him with fireballs. Fireball explosions in this game are just soooo satisfying!

I really doubt that, why should they?
Everyone is able to build a party with 2 mages, 3 would be overkill because you would either have no tank or no rogue which is not worth it. I think the game is actually perfectly balanced wether you have 1 mage in your party or 2.It is not gamebreaking.
Of course if you are playing neither on Hard nor Nightmare with a 2+ mages party you are just chicken :wizard:

I would like to see a party of 4 mages take on a High Dragon.

I'll do it with 3 mages, all with a hand behind their back, without mana/health pots, on nightmare, while posting, without any waffles for breakfast.

To be fair, mages ARE powerful but still need to be managed properly to maximize their talents, especially due to friendly fire.

1 tank + 1 rogue + 2 mages rocks ^_^

Does anyone find enough Lyrium Dust to make enough potions to run with 3 mages? There is no way I could keep up with their potion chugging habits.

Everything would die so fast you wouldn't need a lot of mana regen.

There's one place that has an inexhaustible supply of Lyrium Dust. It's where you would expect it to be.

The mage class can do everything the other classes can do.... better.

Except stand up to a drake overpowering them and ripping their faces off...

Not true at all.
Force field is stronger tanking then any warrior spec.
And know what?
So is arcane warrior spec for mages.

Stealth is the only thing mages can't do.

Even stealing, traps, poisons, grenades are technically open to anyone, including mages.

I don't understand why the healing is mage-centric too. That would seem to be the biggest issue with balance as far as I'm concerned.

The healing is no doubt mage-centric so that there are only 3 base character classes.

I am currently playing on Nightmare with a 3 mage party. It's actually really interesting, because every battle with more than 3 mobs takes forever. By the Maker, the micromanagement is maddening. Things don't die nearly as quickly as you'd think, because so much mana is spent on CC, debuffs, and heals to keep the mages alive.

Personally, I think that mages are fine. The game seemed a fair shade easier when I was using a party with a tank (my PC), Sten/Shale/Zevran (not a fan of Oghren), Wynne, and Lelianna. The more balanced party definitely progressed through the game more quickly, and it seemed easier (though that was on Nightmare as well).

They should really increase the cooldown on Cone of Cold. I love the spell, but holy cow...

A well built Arcane Warrior can solo ANYTHING on Nightmare. The buffs it can keep up are huge. It could stand around all day hacking at anything for 1 damage and still win.

Somebody please elaborate: how, exactly, does the mage class break the balance in the game?

It has already been said.. The mages even at low levels get some powerful AoE and single target spells that really can make any situation easy.. Furthermore they can become healers, have huge amount of buffs, and even become tanks with arcane warrior.. I honestly don't know what they were thinking with them personally.
