Apologies if this has been addressed elsewhere - I know this is a common problem, but I was unable to find my flavor via the Search function.

Utilizing the sticky'd recommended guide for posting:

 1.  It’s important to identify which product is experiencing the problem.
Mass Effect (1)  V1.02

  a.   Is it the console version or the PC version?  (Edit: Most of this is strictly applicable to the PC version.)
PC

  b. Media: physical disk or digital download (and which vendor)
Download from STEAM

2.  System Details

  a. Processor / Core count / Core Speed / Main RAM Amount
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
Quad Core
2.83 GHz
8 GB of OCZ Reaper 1600
on an Asus Rampage Extreme MB

  b. Display Adapter / VRAM / Driver Version (just saying "latest drivers" doesn't help -- Edited: only ATI / nVIDIAcards are supported)
ZOTAC ZT-X26E3KF-FSP GeForce GTX-260  (Nvidea card)
Driver: 8.17.12.5896
Operating dual monitor

  c. Sound Adapter / Driver Version
SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio
Driver 6.10.2.6600
Game settings are such that audio is in Software mode.

  d. Operating System (& service pack if applicable)
Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit.

  e. Direct X Version
DirectX 11

3.  Problem Details
Using the "Run as Administrator" setting, and launching from the MassEffect.exe file directly, I was able to successfully launch the game, select/configure a character, and play on the initial ship.  I was able to move around, dialog, etc.  We arrive at the planet, which is under attack, and squad up to retrieve some artifact.  I see the animation where the ninja guy/whatever say's he acts better alone, and and jumps off the landing bay while the squad watches.

At this point, the game begins loading whatever the next setting is to be - I assume planet side.  There is a graphic of the trans-solar  launching ship thing (with the spinning rings around the vortex ; a la, Contact, the movie).  The rings around the vortex stops spinning, and I receive a pop-up screen saying "Mass Effect has stopped working".  I click it, and the game goes away.

I restart/reboot/etc, launch the game, and tell it to resume game.  Same thing every time.  Out of frustration, I started over completely, selected the default character, repeated the initial on-ship dialogs, and crash again at the same place.

This is confusing me, because the game works well enough for me to walk around the shiop, but it seems to be crashing upon loading.  Any suggestions?  I've heard many good things about this game, and would like to play it.

OK, you have to realize it's summer, and few people are reading game forums.  Most of us are swimming, boating, fishing, vacationing, travelling, playing outdoors in all sorts of ways.   Weekends are even less well attended here.

I don't recognize any red flags anywhere in what you reported, sorry.  You possibly could check the archived forum of the old Legacy Forums, but those are useless, because there is a "most recent six months" limit on the search there, and the old forum was shut down that long ago.

Thank you for the prompt reply.

Since the crash was upon a loading, I couldn't help but wonder if a file was corrupt. I can't see how this would have occurred, but that's the type of behavior I was seeing. So I ran the Steam validation option, and sure enough, it said one of my files was corrupt, and reaquired. And lo - now the game is working!

So we'll see where she goes from here.
