I was looking at the properties of the Gargoyle in the toolset and I noticed something. Where it says “Damage Reduction” there was a “10/ (magic_weapon+1)” which of course made sense to me as is traditional gargoyles. But then I got to wondering, aren’t gargoyles made of stone even in the animated state? And if this be true and I’m about 90% positive it is then shouldn’t there be a damage reduction against slashing weapons and even piercing weapons?

3e gargoyles are no longer made of stone. They are monstrous humanoids.

Even ones that spawn from statues?

There are no stone gargoyles anymore. Gargoyles officially only look like stone when they are still. They still don't have to eat or breath though.Alupinu wrote...

Your character just thinks it's a statue.

Monstrous humanoids or not the question still remains “Are they made of stone?” because if there not then they need to lose the vfx crumbling effect.

Ok kamalpoe your link answered my question and sense I don’t want to get myself into trouble with the community and chased out of town I’m going to leave it at that. Thanks friend.

I'm not a fan of non stone gargoyles, but my understanding is only the hide is made of actual stone, think of it like a shell or scales. I think the monsters called "grist" from the 2E Greyhawk setting are actual stone. Grist are also known as "true gargoyles", which certainly implies other gargoyles are not pure. You can give gargoyles different qualities by changing the composition of their stone skin, to granite/marble/whatever.Alupinu wrote...

I personally remove the crumbling vfx. Funnily enough the only reason I know this was I was doing some research on them for PoE this week.

Funny Kamalpoe you were doing some research too, so was I. Still haven’t made up my mind completely on what I’m going to do about my gargoyles now though. I am thinking I need to make them a little tougher for Fanglewood, not sure yet, more R/D will have to be done before I can make a decision.
Hey while we’re on the subject have you had a chance to check out “Gargoyle Placeables” by QK over at the vault? Comes with 7 statue placeables (nicely done) and the scripts to animate them. I recommend it. Here let me throw you a link. nwvault.ign.com/View.php

I you want tougher gargoyles check margoyles. Basically they are tougher gargoyles, more hp and DR15. Grist are even tougher yet, they are mindless but have even higher DR. I don't believe they have been officially converted to 3e, but would have at least DR20 since they are supposed to be more resistant than even margoyles.
I've seen the placeables, but I don't need them.

Kamalpoe, a DR:15 sounds a little too tough. The dungeon I’m referring to is really for characters of about 4th to 5th lv.
Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t margoyles a aquatic version of a gargoyle? I vaguely remember reading about an aquatic gargoyle in some p-n-p mod long time ago.
I think I’m going to experiment with the Damage Reduction maybe something like “5/(slashing_weapon)” and see how that plays out.
I have to admit I’m with MokahTGS, I grew up with AD&D 2nd edition rules where men where men and gargoyles where magically animated statues made of stone. LOL

The aquatic gargoyles are called kapoacinth. Gargoyles are supposed to be CR4, so they'd be right in line for a party.
