after defeating the dopplegangers, i attack sarevok, and soon someone named "winski perorate" shows up and casts what looks like flame strike. this spell kills me no matter what, even with a scroll of protection from magic in effect!

I believe you have to wait for the conversation where Sarevok decides to fight you. Winski is the mentor of Sarevok if I remember correctly, and he seems to be used here as an Arkanis Gath (kill the PC if he does something that would screw up the story).

that makes sense, but i just tried it again, waited for sarevok to speak and attack, and winski showed up and killed me anyway!

Perhaps you turned someone else hostile with your attacks? spells like fireball can do that. Try reloading from before entering the palace at all.

i'm soloing with a paladin, melee only, so that's not an issue.

i tried using a scroll of protection from fire and potion of fire resistance, giving me 100% fire resistance, and the spell still killed me.

i used ctrl-y to kill winski just as he showed up, but managed to cast the spell from beyond the grave, and killed me!

when precisely did you make this save that you are reloading from?

You should have an autosave from just before entering the Palace.



You need two things:

* At least one of the two Grand Dukes (Belt and Liia Jannath) must be alive (and not hostile) when the last doppelganger dies, and also when Sarevok´s had enough fighting.

* You need some proof of Sarevok´s guilt (his diary or his letter to Slythe).

Last time I was there, I had a few doppelgängers run into the basement after a horror spell. All had to be killed for the next part to occur.

i was missing the diary!

after retrieving sarevok's diary, i returned to the palace and everything proceeded as expected.

wow, what a pain in the ass that was.
